Turkey Afterthoughts

Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving!!!! All I'm going to say about mine is that the food was excellent.

* There isn't enough money on the planet to get me out shopping on Black Friday. Christmas shopping is going to be very limited at my house. I only do gifts for children these days. Michelle asked me what I want for Christmas and I told her that if she bought me anything, I'd spank her. I really don't need/want anything. What I really need is to get rid of some stuff.

* From my 'They're At It Again' department: I've been busy with various projects including signing the petition to repeal the HB 319 which gerrymamders Ohio into 12 Republican districts and 4 Democratic districts. Ohio is a is not a 'red' state; we are a 'purple' state and this bill does not reflect how we vote and if y'all think we can't do it, recall our stellar repeal oh the union-busting bill last month. These idiots don't learn, do they? I also signed up to work on Election 2012. I hope we get the same excellent response on this. Y'all can read about it here.

* I just had a visit from a couple well-dressed Republicans who wanted to explain to me how the Bible applies to the world today. I think y'all (and God) will forgive me for being crabby with them. I'm getting a "We are the 99%" sign for my yard in hopes that that it will act as a repellent again these visits.

* Here's a clip from an email I received from our not so beloved, soon to be one-term governor, John Kasich who, like Scott Walker of Wisconsin, would be sweating out a recall if we had it.

"I'm personally thankful for having been able to announce in the past two weeks that Ohio is helping to create almost 2,000 new jobs for Ohioans. Overall in 2011, Ohio has worked with small, medium and large-sized businesses to create more than 15,000 new jobs for Ohioans. That's more than 15,000 families who will have a better, brighter future. We've still got work to do, but it's exciting to see Ohio beginning to get back on track."

My response?  Puh-lease!!!!!  9.1% of of Ohioans are unemployed and that's a false figure because it's based on the the number of people collecting unemployment and blithely ignores the thousands of Ohioans whose benefits have run out. That he sent this is an insult to me and my fellow Ohioans.  How stupid does he think we are?  Never mind.

* Today Ohio State Buckeyes play their big rivalry game vs. the University of Michigan Wolverines so I'll be glued to the television this afternoon.  We haven't had a stellar season but  long-time fans know that that's immaterial to this game -- anything can happen and it probably will.  And here's the Best Damned Band in the Land doing their signature 'Script Ohio' routine -- always amazing.  The honor of dotting the 'i' goes to the most senior tuba player.  I never get tired of it.  I can't imagine strutting carrying a tuba -- they are heavy!!! Enjoy!!!!

Sunday Update

I'm still buried with my current project and at the point it looks like there's no end in sight! If I could type faster, it would help a lot but distractions abound and, as always, life intrudes and creates delays.

So what is this gargantuan project? I'm organizing my collection of books at my The Library Thing site. One of the problems I've encountered is that I was haphazard (read: lazy) when I began the site and didn't enter my books properly so I'm, for all practical purposes, starting from scratch. My dining room/office has stacks of books sorted by author and content waiting to be organized and, as near as I can tell, 514 books have been cataloged and there are at least that many more awaiting their place -- not to mention putting them back on the shelves properly. I now have a stack of a dozen (and growing) books that I haven't read. Sigh. Are we talking addiction here? At any rate it's slowing me down a bit to say the least.

Michelle brought little Ana over Friday night and we discovered that she loves wind chimes. We let her sit on one of my porch chairs and I'd make them ring for her (yes, I'm tall enough to reach them) and kept Ana giggling and smiling while we talked about Michelle's trip to Florida this week (I wish I had a cousin like hers). I'm taking her to the airport at the ungodly hour of 3 a.m. With what she's been through in the past few months, I think a vacation will be good for her. I'm also have pick up duty for Gracie at school on Tuesday -- always fun! And I promised that I'd help Uncle Jeff keep an eye on Bryce while she's away.

On Saturday, I went over to a friend's to watch the Buckeyes with other kindred spirits. We beat the University of Akron 42-0 so it was sort of a yawn. The first two games are always Ohio schools and give these smaller schools some TV time. Next week we play the University of Toledo. Afterward, I headed to the pharmacy to pick up my scrips and the grocery to restock the larder.

Today, I'm back to the books and trying to get some routine housework done as well as getting ready for another busy week. (And more books!) Sigh. However, I am trying mightily to keep up with y'all!

It Happens . . . and So It Goes . . .

All sort of really interesting things have landed in my e-mail over the weekend but at the forefront seems to be Ohio State Football Coach Jim Tressel's resignation amid allegations that he violated various NCAA rules. I can't say that he did or didn't. What I can say is that he was a class act for the ten years that he coached the Buckeyes and I wish him well. I also wish Luke well in the coming season and I shall remain forever a loyal Buckeye fan and a pox on the fair weather ones.

I have had experience with the NCAA and its rules and know how that they rival the Justinian Code in complexity. My journey with them began in the spring of 1993 when my son started getting letters from various colleges (usually swimming coaches) asking him to come visit them. That summer we visited a few schools that he thought interesting. When he went back to school in the fall, I called the A.D. and asked him for a copy of the NCAA recruiting rules. He was astounded because no one had ever asked for them in all the years he held the position. I was astounded that no one had ever asked for them. I asked for them because over the years I'd read in the sports section about kids' losing out on scholarships because of recruiting violations and we didn't want the Dynamic Duo to miss out on a scholarship for some silly reason or another. He studied them carefully and kept us informed as interested coaches kept calling. The whole thing is crazy and I can see how kids -- a kid like Terrelle Pryor especially -- can get swept up in all the attention and make huge mistakes. My son wasn't in the big leagues but there were days when he came home and said, "If any coaches call tonight, tell them that I'm not here." Heck! I even got calls from coaches who just wanted to talk about what a great kid my kid was. I noticed one week that no had coaches called and mentioned it and Eric said that under NCAA rules, they weren't allowed to call that week. See what I mean?

I'm not making excuses for anyone. If errors were made, the guilty parties have to face the consequences. One of the rules I live by is this: If you're gonna play the game, you had better know the rules -- ignorance has never been a viable defense. Another is: The only really stupid question is the one you don't ask. That's the one that usually gets you in trouble.

Yeah, it's a mess in Columbus and yeah, Jim Tressel will be missed but we are the Buckeyes; we have been through a lot before this and we will live to fight another day (and win!). Here's the song that popped into my mind when someone asked me (me?) what we'd do without Tressel:

Sugar Bowl 2011

Tonight my beloved Ohio State University Buckeyes take on the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. It's going to be a really great game and I wish my good friends and fellow bloggers in Arkansas: Betty, Willie and Alan all the best but I am hoping for a win for my Bucs!!!!

I've been saddened and disappointed with several players who behaved dishonorably recently and hope that they have learned from the experience and go on to glory.

It's Game Day! Gooooo Buckeyes!

It's game day!!!!! I'll be glued to the TV most of the day right here at home. There are parties all over town and I'm invited to several but I'd rather be at home with my own stuff.

Tailgating starts early in Columbus and the campus and High Street (where the college bars are located) have been rocking since last night. It's pure unadulterated crazy fun. If you're interested in game data you can find it here.



Our coach, Jim Tressel, is going for his sixth straight win against the Wolverines and his signature scarlet and gray sweater vests have become part of the legend. "Beware of the vest" signs are seen everywhere to remind everyone what great coach he is. He isn't flamboyant like Woody Hayes. He's incredibly low key and quietly coaches some of the best young men ever to play in the 'Shoe to victory.

Yesterday, the Wolverines arrived and did a walkthrough at the 'Shoe with their coach, Rich Rodriguez.




Another factor is our excellent (on the field AND the classroom) quarterback, Terelle Pryor, who is a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Here's a video of some of his moves:



And, of course the band is always important. Here's their excellent entrance that is a long time Ohio State tradition. I love it.

Thankful Buckeyes

No home for the holiday for the Ohio State Buckeyes. They had practice. However, they did get a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and the afternoon off. Friday means more practice. I can relate to that. The Dynamic Duo were college swimmers and they spent their Christmas breaks with a few days at home for Christmas and the rest training and competing in Florida. Life for a dedicated athlete is not easy and if you're not dedicated, your scholarship has a nasty way of disappearing along with your name on the roster. The level of competition in the Big 10 is fierce and I have a genuine respect for the hard work these young men put in in addition to their studies. And I've heard from reliable sources that Coach Tressel demands excellence in the classroom as well on the field. I think that's become a norm in college sports and I like that. I like this video a lot -- and it's short!!!!!



Sorry this is short but I had a busy Turkey Day with my brother and his wife as well as my niece and the darling grandnieces. My nephew was there sans his fiancee and her daughter (who I count as a grandniece) as she had to go to her parents' house. too. Matt sprung some news on me that took me off guard -- and I'm saving that for Sunday. Don't worry -- it's good news. He has strict orders that he HAS to call me Saturday or I'll track him down like a dog and I think he knows it's easier to call me than have me angry.

It's gonna be an interesting weekend!!!!!!!

The Rivalry

I know some y'all think the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry is pretty nutty and it probably is. However, neither Ohio nor Michigan is known for its glamour or sophistication like California or New York. Both states are "flyover country" and not worthy of notice most of the time. We are down home, flag-waving "just folks". Once a year we go nuts. It's a 100-year-old rivalry and we have fun with it mostly.
Anyone who takes it too seriously is truly insane.

Someone had a good time with photoshop and it refers to the fact that we've won the last five games and are going for six. I can't hate Michigan too much -- I grew up less than an hour south of Ann Arbor in Toledo so there are a bunch of Michigan fans there. My stepmom is a Michigan fan and it's not her fault she was born there. LOL



Here's a "hype" video. There were ones that I liked better but sometimes there was profanity and I prefer not to sully my blog with certain cuss words if y'all get my drift.



For all the jokes and the craziness we do respect each other. A few years ago Michigan's long time coach Bo Schembechler passed away a few days before the game and you can see the respect we Buckeyes had for this great man here.



And I'll close with the band's signature script 'Ohio'. I always get a kick out out of it!

One of the best things about Ohio State Football has little to do with football but is an integral part of Buckeye football. It's what we call The Best Damned Band In The Land and plays a huge part in the spirit of Ohio State Football. They not only perform at skull sessions (pep rallies) before each game, they march across campus to the gym and the 'Shoe and the walkways are lined with fans cheering as they pass. Here they are earlier this season:



And I love the drum section's warm-up on the ramp -- I think it's amazing!



One of my favorite traditions is the playing of Ohio's official rock song!!!!

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!!!!!!!

Since it's Ohio State-Michigan Week, I thought I'd share a couple OSU-Michigan groaners/jokes. Please note that each of these jokes is told in reverse depending on whether one is north or south of the Ohio-Michigan border. I know -- I've been to both U. of Michigan and Ohio State websites and both have the same jokes.

Ann Arbor News Report: Football practice at University of Michigan was delayed on Monday for nearly two hours. One of the offensive players, while on his way to the locker room, happened to look down and notice a suspicious looking, unknown, white powdery substance on the practice field.

The head coach, Lloyd Carr, immediately suspended practice while the FBI was called in to investigate. After a complete field analysis, the FBI determined that the white substance unknown to the players was the goal line.

Practice was resumed when the FBI decided that the team would not be likely to encounter the substance again.

Ohio State Is Ruling Yet Again!!!

I haven't written much about Ohio State this fall. It's a gross understatement to say Buckeyes are winning. They have soundly stomped each of their opponents so far. Our excellent quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, is in the running for the Heisman and gets better every week. And the pundits are talking National Championships and,while I don't count chickens until they hatch, I hope they're right. The hot sign reads "Beware of the Vest" in homage to Bill Tressel's sweater vests. (In fact, bookies in Columbus take bets on what color vest he'll wear on game day!) Rose Bowl Win!!!!! Buckeyes Rule!!!!!!!!

For me, a day with knockies, kraut and dumplings for supper accompanied by Buckeye football is a pretty damn good day but when dessert is a Rose Bowl win, it's seriously euphoric!!!!!

Yeah, all week I read about how much better the PAC-7 was than the Big 10 and how much better the Oregon Ducks were than my beloved Buckeyes and to those so-called experts, I politely say: "Nyah! Nyah! Nyah!" while grinning ear-to-ear as Coach Tressel received the traditional Gatorade bath after the Buckeyes beat the Ducks 27-16 in the Rose Bowl. Sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor, from just across the border in Jeanette, PA, garnered MVP honors!

It really was an excellent game with both teams giving their best. It kept my attention from start to finish!!!! I honestly hate games where the teams aren't evenly matched and this game definitely was not one of those. I do think the Ducks underestimated our defense and that, my friends was their downfall.

The Best Damn Band in the Land marched in the Rose Bowl parade and showed the Ducks fans their signature style at the game. How I envied my fellow fans who were lucky enough to be there! Here's their half-time show in Pasadena!



The New Year is off to a pretty good start! Congratulations to Coach Tressel and the Buckeyes for a great game and a great win!

Gearing Up for New Year's Day

I think it's fitting that I'm beginning my last day of 2009 with a stress test. That said I'm glad 2009 is over. I'm skeptical of 2010 but figure that my beloved Ohio State Buckeyes are in the Rose Bowl so it's not a bad start! Both Brice and David were sporting new bright red Ohio State hoodies when they shoveled my walk this this week -- another good sign! Think Santa's a Buckeye fan?

Random Post-Christmas Thoughts

Hope y'all celebrated the holiday long and well!!!! It was a nice enough holiday here. I went to Midnight mass and did my stint at the parish the next day which is always fulfilling. Things are so bad here that we, as usual, ran out of food and that I bothers me but I do realize is that all we can do is our best and we do. With a 12% unemployment rate (which I think y'all know is a false figure because it doesn't count those unemployment benefits have run out), many are in need. A couple of the regulars who spend Christmas like me stopped at my place afterwards for Kay's Infamous Killer eggnog and snacks. It was fun.

* Brice, my young neighbor, brought me some baklava made by his Greek grandmother. Serious yum! It's probably my favorite dessert and I'm trying hard not to commit the deadly sin of gluttony and make it last a while!

* Diane stopped earlier this week with her special potatoes and some ham for my Christmas dinner. Someone gave her a ham for Christmas and she really isn't supposed to have it so she baked it and divided it between herself, her mom and moi.
I truly appreciate her thinking of me.

* I spoke with my son and his family -- Jen, my daughter-in-law, sounded like a box full of birds; the boys were wound up with excitement over their gifts -- Drake reminds me of my son at that age -- very chatty and Connor is like his Aunt Kate who hates to talk on the phone but he did fine; and Eric seemed really relaxed and happy. I was delighted.

* My buddy/decorator, Richard, stopped and I was so glad -- I hadn't heard from him in an eon!!! He seems to finally be getting over his mom's death. I, of course, gave him hell for making me worry. We agreed that one of our 'treasure hunt' and dinner days is far overdue. He finally got a cell phone and it's now easier for me to track him down. (huge grin)

* Marcia called and we had a great conversation and made plans to get together soon.

* I spoke with my stepmom, too, and she had news of my dad's family as well news of my favorites among her many nieces and nephews. As always, we had a good talk.

* I'm leaving my Christmas stuff up until New Year's Day. I like it.

* No snow for Christmas. In fact, I don't think we've had 2 inches of snow yet. Seriously weird! I haven't had to pay anyone to shovel. My trusty bag of salt has done the trick!

* Here's a favorite song from one of my favorite musicals by the lady who sang it first and sang it best for all you Buckeye fans out there to help you get in the spirit for the bowl game next week!

Go Bucks -- Six in a Row!!!! And Update

Yesterday The Ohio State University Buckeyes met the the University of Michigan Wolverines on the gridiron 21-10!!!! I can guarantee that they're dancin' in the streets in Columbus. We did a lot of whoopin' and hollerin' here, too!!! It was a really good game -- any time the U of M's freshman quarterback gets intercepted for times there's plenty of cause to celebrate. They also captured the Big 10 crown and a berth in the Rose Bowl!!!!!!

I do want to add that Ohio State's players wore Breast Cancer Awareness stickers with the initials 'S.S.' on their helmets in memory of Stefanie Spielman -- wife of former Buckeye and Pro Bowl linebacker, Chris Spielman -- who lost her 10-year battle with breast cancer this past Friday at age 42. I thought it a lovely tribute to a lovely lady who worked very hard speaking out for and supporting breast cancer causes. We in my county are especially touched by this because both Chris and Stefanie are from here where they were high school sweethearts and lived for a while after they graduated from college.

* The party at my house was sort of a bust because not many came by but we had fun anyway. I asked everyone to bring their own beverage and something to share and I provided coney dogs, sloppy joes and chips. I think that I don't have a big TV might have been a mitigating factor. Oh well! Then again, that I've been such a hermit of late could also be a factor. The grapevine has it that some people are annoyed with me. Oh well.

* I'm trying to decide what I'm going to be doing here and I'll be sharing that with y'all soon. The groaners will return in some form and I will still ask that you send them to me. Posting them in comments is NOT an option as I've said in the past.

* I'm still struggling to get caught up on email from my absence here. Please forgive me. I'm also trying to get my blog roll organized. There are over 100 blogs on it and not all are on blogger's following feature. All of this takes big chunks of time and is tedious at best. Mea culpa.

* I'm still tired a lot. Hopefully, that will be addressed when I go to the endocrinologist in two weeks.

Not much more to say. I'm probably forgetting something but that's okay. it was probably silly anyway.

Game Day!

It's Game Day!!!!!! At noon -- today I will be firmly planted in front of the television (hopefully surrounded by like-minded friends) for the kickoff of the annual meeting of The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan. It's one of those games where records, stats, etc. can just be ignored -- none of those matter! Anything can happen.

That said, I found this list that shows how long it's been since Michigan won --
2,192 days. It really sort of surprised me.

The Last Time Michigan Beat Ohio State in Football:

•Kanye West hadn’t released his debut album yet.
•George W Bush was in his first term as President.
•The Boston Red Sox still hadn’t won a World Series title in 85 years.

Game Day Eve 2009!!!!!!

It was a busy day yesterday with cleaning, grocery shopping and visiting Dr. Jamie. The news from the latter was good but not great. My eye has improved but is not completely healed yet and I have to continue the medicine until it is gone. Today, I'll finish preparations for the game after I call Dr. Maria and talk to her nurse. She called while I was running errands and I missed it. I can't help but wonder what fresh hell this is. Sigh.



The fans above are typical of Buckeyemania. Don't be surprised if y'all see them in the stands at tomorrow's game! Y'all would never catch me not bundled up on a cold November day -- not even in my crazy younger days!!!!

Thursday Already?

I've not been paying attention and keeping myself occupied with assorted nonsense and I realized that it's Thursday! Only two days until the Buckeyes meet the Wolverines at "The Big House," as U. of M's stadium is nicknamed and that means most Buckeye fans will be watching the game on television somewhere.

* Today I go back to Dr. Jamie to see if my eye is better. I hope it's good news. I think it's much better.

* Since I'm prolly going to have company Saturday, I'm going to have to do some housework. It's nothing that clearing clutter, dusting and my sweeper can't cure in an hour or so. And oh yeah, a trip to the grocery will happen tomorrow. Friday will be insane.

* I found some interesting stuff re: Sarah Palin that I'll write about next week. The woman amazes me in some of the things she says and does.

* In keeping with this week's theme, here's Columbus Police and Fire Pipes and Drums performing The Ohio State Fight Song at the Dublin (Ohio) Irish Festival. I thought it great fun!!!!

Getting Hyped

I'm getting things done so I can enjoy Saturday's game. Couple folks said they might come by so I guess I'd best get some extra snacks and more beer at the groc shop on Friday. And if no one shows up, I'm gonna be somewhat annoyed.

* Today I played with my new software and actually recalled most of what I needed it to do and how to do it.

* I had an amazing 'senior moment'. I was out picking up a scrip ( only $3.99!) and a few other things and I decided to get one of the $5.01 combos at Arby's to take home for supper as I was starving and didn't want to wait. I placed my order and pulled up to the drive-thru window and handed the young lady my debit card. Then she handed me back my debit card and I pulled away and headed for home! I was halfway home when I reached across to the passenger's seat to snitch a curly fry and realized that I had no food!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh I turned around (no, I didn't do a u-turn) and went back to Arby's with my face glowing red above my OSU t-shirt and got my food. Alzheimer's? Dementia?

* And to those who wrote or left a comment: It took a long time until my ex and I could get along -- and it's more like an armed truce.

And So It Goes . . .

Been busy!!! I'm determined to get out of the funk I've been living in -- and that will last until my world falls apart again.

* I've been spending some time on some things I'm interested in -- like putting a dent in the "gotta read" pile and getting my collection of books on my account at The Library Thing. It's a great site but it takes a LOT of time. I wish they had a site like that for my movie collection.

* I've also been neglecting myself terribly so I decided that just because I feel like doesn't mean I have to look like hell so I'm starting back on my vitamin regimen and making sure I take better care of my appearance.

* The Ex was over today and installed a new DVD/CD rom burner and software on my computer and he showed me how to use it. It's kind of amazing how we get along these days but there are still undercurrents if I say the wrong thing so I avoid stuff. Sigh. But I always tell him to give his roommate my best. My friends think that's weird but she didn't cause our divorce so I really have nothing against her and she's always nice to me. I'm glad they're happy. And I'm not totally stupid -- I know that if I found someone (or someone found me), it would most likely become less cordial.

* I'm also trying to get my den finished a little at a time. I still haven't found the "right" curtains -- yeah, I know I'm picky and I want to set up my other (old) computer and network it with this one. That should be a fun challenge.

* All that said, here was my horoscope for yesterday: Your spirit of renewal bodes well for someone who wants to return to your life. I can't think of anyone who would want to return or I would want to my life. It gave me good a good laugh!!

* Buckeye Week continues!!! Lotta hype and trash talkin' going on but it's mostly in good fun. Here's really nice video about Ohio State -- you wouldn't believe the dreck I had to wade through but a girl has to be true her standards. (Does it annoy y'all how casually the 'F' word is tossed about these days? I sure puts me crazy.)

Here We Go Again!!!!!

It's "Beat Michigan" week here in Ohio and everyone is donning their scarlet and grey, putting up banners, planning parties, and generally raising Cain in celebration -- especially after winning the Big Ten Championship!!! I'm not doing much myself but on Saturday y'all can be sure I will wearing one of my Ohio State shirts and watching the game. And I won't be worrying about cholesterol that day. LOL

I'm pretty sure y'all are familiar with the Ohio State's signature routine, Script Ohio, where the Senior Sousaphone player with the best GPA dot's the 'i'. It's a really nice tradition. Sometimes famous alumni -- a couple years ago it was Jack Nicklaus -- get to do it but it's usually a senior. Here's a video that shows an incident that occurred back in September when Ohio State played USC.



In my research, I found that that camera man was told to give the young man space but noooooooooo. Somehow the press has become incredibly intrusive.
