A Couple Notes

Just a few random thoughts at the end of kinda weird, sometimes crazy, week.

* The ex and I saw "Lincoln" last last night. We both loved it which was no great surprise -- we're both history buffs and fans of Steven Spielberg. (we raised two more so I'm guessing that our kids won't miss it either). Daniel Day Lewis), Tommy Lee Jones, and Sally Field were outstanding (gross understatement) in their roles as President Lincoln,Thaddeus Stevens, and Mary Todd Lincoln respectively and Spielberg's production appeared to be right on -- I especially liked the antique feeling of the film and there was a surprise ending -- which was a surprise in itself. It was a kick to see Lincoln wandering around D.C. without a cadre of Secret Service guys! What bothers me most is that we're still fighting over the same damn stuff. Sigh. Here's the trailer:



* I was appalled at the nastiness that went on here and elsewhere over my Rubio post and I finally deleted/refused a lot of them. I don't have a blog to have my character maligned, my intelligence insulted, and my life torn to shreds and if you came to my home and behaved that way, I'd throw you out post haste. I'm a pretty tough old broad but there's line that decent people shouldn't cross. Thanks to all of you who supported me -- especially Cop Car who ran excellent defense. Those Kansas women are tough and smart!!!

* Speaking of YouTube, in my wanderings there I tripped a pair of delightful, creative young Croatian men who have been taking the music world by storm. They call themselves TwoCellos and are classically trained. Before y'all start yawning, picture cellos hooked to amps and play good old Rock and Roll!!! I just love them -- as I do any artist who really love what they're doing. I don't want to say that they're good but Sir Elton John has become one of their biggest fans. Here's some short video . . . Kay's World, Politics, and Other Insanity

It's another day in paradise. Yesterday morning I discovered a rather cute kitten on my front porch crying. As near as I can tell he/she was abandoned. In a perfect world, I might adopt him/her but I can barely afford to feed myself properly due to cuts much less pay for neutering and shots so I'm trying to figure out what to do about him/her.

Update fron Kay's Chaotic World

I've been a very busy old gal. I'm wayyyyy behind on everything. In my next life I'm gonna be organized and healthy and rich.

* I had my semi-annual checkup with my old buddy, Dr. Jody the neurologist, who was upset 'cause Dr. Maria didn't send him the skinny on my recent surgery.

* I also had to see Dr. Mark the orthopedist as I strained a muscle or two in my good shoulder. I'm supposed to rest. Yeah, right . . . when donkeys fly!

* Today I have to go to the hospital for my weekly class. I'm not talking about it until I can "Mission Accomplished!" except to say that I think I'm doing pretty well.

* Today is also monthly errand day -- scrips, gasoline, grocs, and a present for Racy Gracie's Birthday on Saturday!!!

* Last Saturday was a double whammy. I spent the morning working for the Obama campaign to register folks to vote. Imagine my surprise when I found that I was working with my friend Norma who I'd met when I was working for my then Congressman. Norma is also a member of our Occupy group which was also meeting that day so we made a mad dash from one venue to the next. We both turned down passes to see Obama in Columbus on Saturday (tomorrow) due to prior commitments. She says it looks like he'll visit here later on in the campaign and I hope that I can get a ticket for that.

Birthdays

I don't care for birthdays very much -- specifically, my own. Sigh. It's mostly a case of no apparent interest among my circle of friends and acquaintances so I mostly just ignore it. Yesterday was my 65th birthday. The only person who remembered it was my long time (pre-blogging) 'net friend Hal aka AlwaysQuestion. Thanks, Hal!!!!

I kept thinking about how I was going to spend my day and had pretty much decided that I was just going to do what I needed to do sooooooooo I headed to the laundromat to drop off my laundry which Bryce had loaded into my car because of the post-surgery limits imposed on me and the nice folks there kindly unloaded it. (Today, I'll go pick it up -- all sorted and neatly folded.) From there I went to the grocery to pick up a few items to restock the larder. As I was passing the in-store bakery, a light bulb lit up in my poor damaged brain and I decided to give myself a birthday party and found a small chocolate, whipped cream-filled cake and went on to finish my shopping. When I got home Bryce came bounding to my car to unload my groceries and I told him that he, his mom, and Racy Gracie and Baby Ana were invited for birthday cake after supper. Michelle called to verify a bit later.

At around 6:30, they all showed up with dear D.O.G. in tow and ready to beg for his dog cookies. They had birthday balloon, presents and hugs and I, of course was delighted. Michelle and the kids gave me a gift card to the Greek restaurant in our hood (serious yum!) AND a great new sign for my kitchen: I only have a kitchen because it came with the house." ;) Michelle's mom sent along a card with good wishes and cash.

Ana was absolutely precious as a two-year-old can be. The cake was great and everyone inhaled it before heading home to do homework. It was just a small party but it was great fun and one of the best birthdays I've had in years.

Question of the day:

Racy Gracie asked, "Kay? Why do you only have five candles on your cake?

Kay: Because if I put 65 candles on my cake, the firemen would have to come and put it out!

She giggled a lot.

Update, and Assorted Stuff

I am wayyy behind on visiting y'all and answering email. I'm resting a lot -- mostly because I really don't have too much choice. This too shall pass and I'll be trying to get caught up with y'all slowly but surely. Thanks to all y'all who understand and come by whether I get over to visit or not -- you're support really helps a lot.

* I saw the Doc (Vascular Dude) on Thursday and he says that I'm doing just fine but should take it easy mostly. The good part of that is that I can drive so I don't have beg anyone to take me where I need to go; the bad news is that I still am having some pain and weirdness but he says that will go away and that I shouldn't overdo. Right.

* I went to my 'Occupy' meeting yesterday and it was, as always, interesting. What I like best about this group is that they are more about improving our community than just shouting about what's wrong in our society/country -- although they do that now and again, too.

Getting Better -- or Something like it!!!!!

I'm tired. Surgery always leaves me drained and this one has been exceptionally so. Still, I am healing and that's a good thing. I'll be glad after I see Dr. Maria and Dr. Dave next week -- mostly because I want to be able to drive as I hate having to beg people (who said "Just call me!" to take me where I need to go.

* I had to go to the optician the other day because a lens popped out of my glasses and couldn't find anyone but the ex to help. He's done more than his share and I really hate asking as he's taking me to my appointments next week.

* The scar that runs from my right ear to my collar bone is healing. I hope it starts to fade, too. I'm pretty self-conscious about it and it will prolly keep me home a lot because of total strangers stares and queries about it -- like they really care or it's their business. Hopefully, Vitamin E will help when I get the okay for it.

* Alec called to ask me if I'd go get Jeff's house ready as he and Shaughnessy are coming back from Florida. I explained that I absolutely couldn't this time and didn't tell him why -- I don't need or want his son bugging me.


* I signed a petition from the Democratic party against the Republicans' radical budget that will gut Medicare and Social Security. It's a death sentence for many of us -- especially women who don't have a lot of money or those of us who aren't well. Y'all can sign it here and I hope you will.

* This came in my email this morning and I think it's right. It also applies to elders in my not so humble opinion.

* And Willie Nelson, the farmers' best friend, makes a powerful statement on the plight of the family farms today and as the granddaughter of family farmers, I have to pass it on.

Yikes!!!!

Some of you may be wondering where in the hell I've been.  I've been in hell aka the hospital since last Wednesday when my right eye decided to go haywire like it did a few months ago when it precipitated a batch of tests with Dr. Dave the vascular surgeon.  Soooooooooo I called Dr. Dave and he told me to report to the hospital immediately.  Diagnosis?  Carotid Artery Disease. Soooooooooooo I've been in the hospital ever since and had my surgery yesterday instead of today as originally planned. There was also talk of my being sent to a nursing home for a few days because he didn't want me to be alone -- and I promptly threw a hillbilly fit on that. Michelle brought the kids to visit me along with a pot of yellow tulips. (big smile)  Fortunately, Michelle's mom volunteered to come and keep an eye on me for a few days so I'm back home now. AND I'm not allowed to drive which I hope will end soon. The Ex has been a champ and took me to the hospital and back home again (including the grocery and my scrips) and as well as checking in daily.  I'm on a pretty strict low cholesterol diet.  Sigh.  I'm also supposed to rest and eat healthy and I'm not allowed to drive. (Yeah, right. We'll see about that.) 

Hopefully, I'll get to feeling better soon and get back to ranting and raving as usual!!!!

Yikes!!!

Insomnia is going to kill me. And if it doesn't get me, bureaucracy will. The bottom line is that I'm exhausted and that, my dear friends, is why I've been such a bad old blogger. I've a lot of ideas I'd like to share here but, I simply can't get organized.

Hopefully, after my surgery, I'll feel better. I've done some reading on the ramifications of a blocked carotid artery here and it explains a lot. God bless Dr. Jamie, my eye guy, for his good work in suggesting that Dr. Maria check it out. Dr. Dave says that my medical history shows that I'm a trooper/good patient so I'll do just fine. That said, I do worry and I think that's pretty normal.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to keep up here and with what all y'all have been doing but if I don't, at least you'll know why.

New Stuff

An ancient Chinese curse is "May you live in interesting times." The first time I heard it many decades ago, I was a tad confused by it. Today we're living it and I understand it completely. If times get any more interesting, I might just have a breakdown and I don't think I'm alone in that. Here are some of the most interesting things I've seen lately:

* In the wake of Virginia's intrusive vaginal probe laws, State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) of the great State of Ohio, introduced Ohio Senate bill 307 in the Ohio Senate. Several other women legislators have proposed variations in Virginia and Here's the the short video -- there are long versions on YouTube:



I saw "Game Change" -- the story of Sarah Palin and the 2008 election -- the other
and it was horrifying and fascinating all at once. Word on it is that it's well-rooted in truth -- check out YouTube for interviews. Here's the trailer:



Last night I attended a screening of "The Road We've Traveled" -- Obama's campaign film -- at our county's Democratic Party's headquarters. I made lots of new friends
and was gratified to see and meet many enthusiastic elders eager to participate in the campaign. If nothing else, I'm gonna have fun this fall -- I love campaigning and meeting new friends. The movie is very well done and showcases President Obama's accomplishments as well as the many problems of the the past four years as one would expect. It's short -- less than twenty minutes. I checked and it's on YouTube as I type this and y'all can see it here. The Republicans -- Wow! What a shock! -- are already calling it 'a deception'.

Still Crabby but Keepin' On . . .

I'm still pretty crabby.  However, in the midst of yesterday's doldrums I received an invite from the Democratic party to see a screening of Obama's campaign film: The Road We've Traveled  tomorrow evening so I'm gonna drag myself out to see it. Some call it 'political propaganda' -- like the GOP doesn't indulge in that sort of thing. (Yeah . . . right)  I'll let George Strait sing my response to those damn fools -- I hope y'all enjoy it. And if you're interested, check with your local Democratic Party.

Sniffling on Sunday Thoughts

My cold is still very much with me but I'll be on the phone to Dr. Maria in the morning. I hate to bother her on her days of and, since my surgery isn't until the 28th, I'm not gonna bother her.

* I took stuff over to the ex yesterday and he asked me to stay to dinner. He likes to cook and knows how awful I am about cooking these days.

* I'm really proud of my son the coach. His teams did well at the NAIA national swim meet with his girls finishing 6th and the guys finishing 8th. Since University of the Cumberlands is one of that smallest schools in the conference, that was pretty good but he is used to "small but mighty". When he was in college, his college was the smallest in NCAA Division II and he and three other guys finished 4th at Nationals. I've no doubt that next year his kids will do even better. That recruiting is one one of his strong points helps a lot. Now that the season is over, he'll have time more time for Jen and the boys and I'm sure they are delighted. Who knows? They might even have time for a trip to Ohio or Illinois! Then again, recruiting for next season is always important and time-consuming.

* Bill Moyers had an excellent interview with David Stockman, architect of the Reagan Revolution, on "Crony Capitalism". It really an eye-opener and exposes what needs to be done with the casino created by the banksters. It's rather long but well worth your time. Here's a two minute clip that says a lot:



* I'm making some really cute little needlepoint Easter Baskets for Gracie and Ana Michelle. I'm one of those people who simply cannot just sit and watch television without having busy hands. If I remember, I'll take photos for y'all.

* One of my next projects will be some much-needed blog housekeeping. And no, I'm not 'upgrading' to Blogger's new interface. I tried it and that lasted about five minutes. I really hate it so I'm sticking with what I have as long as I can but will be considering/exploring other options if I'm forced to do so.

* I'm in music mode today and hauled out the oldies. This 1968 goodie brings back memories of my misspent youth, slow dancin' and a really great summer! Sigh. Enjoy!

Post Primary and Assorted Other Thoughts

I have come down with a nasty cold. So far, no fever but I'm all stuffed up and a tad froggy,  I prolly should call Dr. Maria or Dr. Dave because of my forth-coming surgery. I got a letter from the latter this morning telling me that I have to have an arteriogram (a new one on me) soon and they gave me a tentative date and info for my surgery later this month. I really need to call them in the morning.   Sigh.

The Ohio primary is still very much in the news and I've a few things that came in that I want to share with y'all.  I hope you enjoy them.

* I think that y'all know that as the daughter, sister, ex-wife, and mother of a vet (etc.),  I support our troops and veterans.  I  get  the newsletter from votevets.org  and the most recent issue asked me to sign a petition to get Rush Limbaugh off Armed Forces radio on that Rush was disrespectful to all women in the Sandra Fluke debacle -- and specifically the women of the military. If you agree, go over and lend your support by signing it.   Thanks in advance.

* I know I  mentioned that the Republicans in the Statehouse gerrymandered our congressional districts horribly.  One of the worst examples took place this week with a tough race between two of my favorite Congress Critters:  Marcy Kaptur of Toledo and Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland. And that, gentle bloggers demonstrates graphically how heinous the redistricting was.  It was a pretty tough race and Dennis disappointed me by getting awfully nasty.  Marcy won and will be running against that idiot that Sarah Palin  adopted in the 2008 campaign, Joe the Plumber.  I think Marcy will win handily.  We need her progressive voice.

* There's been a lot of criticism of Matt Taibbi's obituary of Andrew Breitbart whose venom was never my cuppa. Mr.Taibbi's obit was downright tame compared to Breitbart's eulogy on Ted Kennedy.  

* John Kasich has pretty  much sealed his fate as a one term governor. In the wake of the devastating tornadoes that struck southwestern Ohio he initially refused federal aid which would have excluded home owners from getting help in re-building/repairing their homes. He has since requested that aid but as my grandpa would have said:  "You can't un-ring a bell."

* Martin Bashir calls out Mitt Romney: Limbaugh's lunacy succinctly (about 2.5 minutes) and eloquently:.

And in conclusion, on Super Tuesday, over 547,000 Ohioans came out and cast their ballots for an uncontested Barack Obama. I'm proud to have been one of them.

Surprise! Surprise!

I've been meaning to write about this for the last week but the idiocies on the GOP side -- notably Rush (who Al Franken called a big fat idiot) -- have distracted all of us from the Super Tuesday of which the Great State of Ohio will participate.

I shouldn't have been surprised when I got a call from a pollster who wanted to know how I was going to cast my ballot but I'm always surprised anyway. I answered the very nice lady who had the good taste to laugh at my jokes (lol) and as we were ending my interview, in a rare display of clarity, I asked her what polling organization she represented. I laughed my head off when she said, "Quinnipiac."  

If y'all are like me, you always wonder when you hear the media refer to the polls, you wonder who answers these poll. Well, now you have the answer: people like me. Now that may scare some of y'all and gratify others. Either way, I thought it interesting and pretty cool.

Gotta take my Election Day walk down to the American Legion post to cast my ballot.

Yesterday I attended a meeting with our local 'Occupy' movement. It's alive and well and under new management -- a good thing. Somehow my name fell through the cracks but I was welcomed warmly. One of the chairpersons, after I offered an observation, said, "I want you on my committee! I like your ideas!" I was, of course, flattered. Then again, I have been involved with many different volunteer, social and political groups over the years and I'd like to think that I learned something from my experiences and can contribute to it's success. I think that I'm going to enjoy this -- it's a diverse group and us elders are well-represented. I have a feeling I'm gonna be a busy old gal.

With all the insanity in the news, I thought some comic relief might be a good idea. I think y'all know what I think about Rush's latest idiocy/ignorance/baloney (I'm being kind) so we won't go there. Here is some wit and wisdom from my inbox:

It's Always Something . . .

Thanks to all y'all for all the compassion and friendship you have given me.  I sincerely appreciate it. And here's a one minute blast from the late, great Gilda Radner that is pertinent to my so-called life.

 

Yesterday was Thoracic Surgeon day and I was to get my test results. Dr. Dave is somewhat atypical of my experience with surgical types. He's friendly, funny and personable and very thorough. I can't help but reiterate how my dear Dr. Maria always refers me to the greatest specialists. It's a blessing.

Again I was amazed with the progress of modern technology in medicine. Dr. Dave came in with a DVD with my name on it in popped it in the examining room's computer. It didn't want to load properly so he called the Foundation to send it over to again and sent me home with orders to call him after five and tell his service to page him. I did and he called back relatively quickly. There's a blockage in one of my carotid arteries and he said it really isn't that bad. However, because of my history of stroke and the recent episode with my eye, he wants to do surgery and explained that it only requires an overnight stay. I said okay.

Soooooooo sometime in the next couple weeks, I'm going under the knife. I'm always a bit nervous about such things but Dr. Dave is terrific and I trust him.

So that's the latest from Kay's World!!! I tried to get around and see as many of y'all as I could and try for more tomorrow.

What's a Girl to Do?

I'm scared therefore I vent.

Poverty sucks. I've been MIA here because I've been engaged in my annual battle with bureaucracy. It isn't over yet but after yesterday's encounter, I'm feeling the full force of what the Republicans are doing to elders in this country. The worst part is that it isn't over yet and I doubt it will be pretty.  At the rate things are going, groceries are  becoming a luxury item and  they've already cut that but it could well be on the  block yet again as I have a review with those bureaucrats soon so we'll see.  I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to do about it but I'm going to have to do something.  As a result of yesterday's encounter, my rent expense went up $47 on top of having my food assistance cut by $100.  All this because I received a $30 increase in my Social Security checks.  It doesn't take a Rhodes scholar to do the math on that.

I didn't bother to call my Tea Party congressman as talking to a wall isn't productive and just raises my blood pressure.  I did call my State rep's office and, while his person was sympathetic, that was unproductive as was my call to my Senator, Sherrod Brown, who I know is on the side of the angels.  His aide was sympathetic but clueless. Sooo this already skinny old gal is about to get skinnier. There isn't anywhere that I can cut anymore. I've raised stretching dollars to an art form but there really isn't anything left to cut except my Internet service and I'll starve before I do that.   

None of this is going to help my health problems. If anything. it will make things worse. Stress has a nasty way exacerbating everything.   It's already kicking in and my anxiety medication is being used more.

Back in the 60s Lyndon Johnson made history with his War on Poverty that has helped millions.  Today, the Republicans are waging war on poverty  but they want to kill poor people. And they call themselves Christians . . .

Trying to Be Normal

I spend a lot of my life trying to do things right to no avail and that makes for an exercise in frustration. I won't bore you with the details.

I have been a horrible blogger and friend. What can I say? The tests last week and assorted other interruptions (including my horrid, erratic sleep patterns) are driving me bonkers. Hopefully, life will settle down. I have one more test this week and an appointment with Thoracic Doc on the 1st before this installment of the adventure I call a life is over. I hope someone has some answers. I'm awfully tired of being tired.

* I'm pretty angry (read: livid) that there are no women are on the house committee that wants to deny women access to birth control. I hope y'all are, too. Tell your Congress Critter. I tried telling mine but he's a tea party creep and all I got was a party line. Needless to say, I wasn't surprised.

* I finally got around to doing some research on neuropathy to see if there was any kind of treatment for it. There really isn't very much but there were reports that vitamins E and B12 seem to help so when I picked up my scrips, I bought both. I figure that it can't hurt.

* How mild has our winter been in Ohio? A week a go we finally got a couple inches of snow and it was gone within 48 hours. I've hardly worn gloves or a hat or even buttoned my coat. I'm still betting that we'll have a blizzard on my birthday just for fun.

* The Violence Again Women Act is up for reauthorization in the Senate and all the Republicans voted against it -- another slam at women. Y'all can read more here

* Here's Bill Maher calling out yet again (in about a minute) the ignorance we're up against today. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

Update, Random Thoughts, etc. . . ,

I have been AWOL from here and the blogosphere due to dealing with my never-ending health issues and assorted other nonsense that seem to permeate my so-called life. I feel bad about that but it is what it is and there are some things that one simply can't change.  The again, maybe if I were more organized . . . er . . . never mind.

* I saw the new doc aka Dr. Dave and Dr. Maria made another great referral.  I swear she knows all the best specialists in town, i.e. the bright, no B.S. types who know their stuff and don't shilly-shally which is great for me and her other patients. Dr. Dave said my carotid scan didn't show enough so I am  now scheduled for three more test (yikes) and a return visit in the next two weeks.  I think that I should just camp at the Foundation -- but only if they give me Internet privileges.(laughing uproariously at the thought.)  Seriously, I just hope that the tests provide some insights and solutions.

* I'm trying mightily to eat healthier but I just don't have an appetite or the energy to work at it. Cooking for one sucks and I'll be damned if I'll eat the same damned thing for days.  

* We actually had a real bona fide winter storm on Friday.  This is the weirdest winter I've ever seen in my over six decades in Ohio.

* My Sunday delight is Bill Moyers' return.  I've always enjoyed his programs and the newest incarnation is no exception.  This morning's episode, "How the Right Went Wrong", features Bruce Barlett -- the conservative economist who served under Bush -- and has fallen into disfavor (probably because he actually makes sense).   It's a wonderful piece albeit a bit long. *  Alec called and is very upset.  It seems his damned fool son is threatening to head for Ohio with the dog because he wants to help me.   I told Alec to chain Jeff to the first tee at the club and hold him at gunpoint to play.  His presence would not help and just add to the stress I'm supposed to avoid. Just the thought raises my blood pressure. If he could just send Shaughnessy, I'd like that a lot!

* I get all sorts of petitions for legislation daily from the various newsletters I follow and I'm seriously thinking of adding the links as an extra feature so they don't clutter my regular stuff.  I sign petitions 'cause I can't afford to donate much and there's a lot of good things on the table.

* I did receive a really fun link from RootsAction. It's a contest based on Mitt Romney's assertion that "Corporations are people. and y'all can enter here. To enter, just complete the sentence: I'll Believe Corporations Are People When ... My contribution? I'll Believe Corporations Are People When They Request a pregnancy leave. Fun huh?
