A Couple Notes

Just a few random thoughts at the end of kinda weird, sometimes crazy, week.

* The ex and I saw "Lincoln" last last night. We both loved it which was no great surprise -- we're both history buffs and fans of Steven Spielberg. (we raised two more so I'm guessing that our kids won't miss it either). Daniel Day Lewis), Tommy Lee Jones, and Sally Field were outstanding (gross understatement) in their roles as President Lincoln,Thaddeus Stevens, and Mary Todd Lincoln respectively and Spielberg's production appeared to be right on -- I especially liked the antique feeling of the film and there was a surprise ending -- which was a surprise in itself. It was a kick to see Lincoln wandering around D.C. without a cadre of Secret Service guys! What bothers me most is that we're still fighting over the same damn stuff. Sigh. Here's the trailer:



* I was appalled at the nastiness that went on here and elsewhere over my Rubio post and I finally deleted/refused a lot of them. I don't have a blog to have my character maligned, my intelligence insulted, and my life torn to shreds and if you came to my home and behaved that way, I'd throw you out post haste. I'm a pretty tough old broad but there's line that decent people shouldn't cross. Thanks to all of you who supported me -- especially Cop Car who ran excellent defense. Those Kansas women are tough and smart!!!

* Speaking of YouTube, in my wanderings there I tripped a pair of delightful, creative young Croatian men who have been taking the music world by storm. They call themselves TwoCellos and are classically trained. Before y'all start yawning, picture cellos hooked to amps and play good old Rock and Roll!!! I just love them -- as I do any artist who really love what they're doing. I don't want to say that they're good but Sir Elton John has become one of their biggest fans. Here's some short video . . . AC/DC and Vivaldi, too. Did you ever think you'd see teens screaming over Vivaldi? They do. Here two videos that show their versatility and talent . . .

Quick Holiday Update

'Twas the day before Christmas and I'm almost but not quite ready for it. I've felt pretty "Bah! Humbug!" all week! and think I've a wee cold. Not from snow and cold -- but rain and temps in the 40s. It's Christmas Eve and it's only snowed once and it last about twenty minutes -- not that I like snow all that much but it doesn't seem right without it. Here are a few things to bring y'all up to speed.

* I saw the endocrinologist this week and it was all good. The nodules on my thyroid aren't growing and my blood work was good.

* Jeff's annual open house went very well. The turnout was better than usual -- probably due to his recent illness. I got tired of being asked if we were back together. I was just helping because Alec asked. Alec is 87 and I can't say 'no' to him. It was nice to see some people I hadn't seen in a while.

* Alec flew to Florida on Tuesday and Jeff and Shaughnessy traveled by limo and took their time getting down there. Normally Jeff drives for an extended stay but the doc said, "No!" Hopefully, he'll be back to normal by the time he gets back in April or May. (And, of course, I've been appointed to keep an eye on things.)

* I'm ready for Christmas -- all the presents are wrapped and some decorations are up. Bryce and I discovered that most of my decorations were ruined by a some leaks in my basement. I was really unhappy because most of my favorite things were casualties. Oh well, I guess it's an opportunity to hit the after Christmas sales -- which would be nice if I weren't broke. Sigh. According to some 'friends', that's my own damned fault. I guess I'm supposed to have a dollar sign for a heart. I'm not for sale.

* Speaking of heartless greed, my Grinch of 2011 Award goes to: Ta-da!!! Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) who tried to steal Christmas as well as 2012 and even his fellow Republicans rebelled -- probably with Election 2012 planted firmly in mind. Am I being cynical? Hell yeah!!!

Thursday, Thursday Ramblings

The battle with the plumbing is continuing. Dan (my landlord) will be camped here most of the day -- again. I hope it finally gets fixed. It's frustrating and horrendously inconvenient which means I'll get nothing done!!! Sigh. At least, I have an excuse -- for a change. (Eyes rolling)

Last night around 11 o'clock  Michelle called and told me to close my doors and windows!  It seems that a guy who was out taking a walk was held up at gunpoint by two armed pedestrians near us.  Scary.  Her brother Jeff was out on their porch with a taser  -- I guess he was watching for them. I wouldn't mess with him.   It's weird.  I've always felt safe here but today I feel less so and hope this isn't the beginning of a trend. Word this morning is that the cops were patrolling all night.  The guys on our beat right now are pretty good. I (almost) feel sorry for anyone who decides to hold me up. I rarely carry cash. Yeah, I'm a slave to my debit card.

I think that the earthquake in Virginia took us all off guard. We actually had a little one in my part of Ohio in 1997.  It was disconcerting because we aren't famous for that. I suppose Virginians are equally perplexed.

I hope all y'all on the Eastern Seaboard are battening down the hatches for Irene the terrible and I hope she decides to take a turn and head out to sea.

A Blast from the Past!!!!!!!

I got so busy with assorted projects that have been languishing far too long that it was far too late to put together a more ambitious post today.

Remember junior high? The days when we got home from school and watched American Bandstand and learned the latest dances and music? And, even better, we got to see our favorite recording stars! Ever wonder what happened to those guys and gals?

Danger! Comments Cause Blog Posts!!!

My friend Elaine of Kalilily Time whose blog got me interested in the River of Stones project and made that comment: "OK. We're both rolling now. Rolling stones, get it??!!" I got it and I laughed and it set me a-thinkin' back to my misspent youth and I headed to YouTube. Here are the songs for this week:

If one is of a certain age one cannot -- cannot -- hear the words 'rolling stones' without thinking of Mick and the boys. I was in high school and I seem to recall deciding I liked them just to annoy my sister who was an ardent Beatles fan. Then again, I still prefer bad boys to the pretty ones and I still like to pull out my Rolling Stones for housework music!!! Here's a fave y'all will probably recall:



In 1965 I graduated from high school and began college and somewhere I got interested in Bob Dylan's music! This one is a favorite.



The late 60s/early 70s Soul music came to the mainstream and this Temptations hit was one of my favs.



A year or so later, my friends and I laughed and sang along with Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show.



I guess Elaine and I are the Elderblogger Rolling Stones. I don't know about her but I can't carry a tune in a bucket so don't wait for our debut CD!!!!

Some Holiday Fun

All sorts of stupidity is reigning here. Miss Ruby isn't feeling well and, fortunately, my good neighbor John came to my rescue. It's a temporary fix and the permanent one scares me as it could be outrageous. Sigh. Pray or think lovely thoughts.

Call me crabby but I don't remember the last time I felt this "Bah! Humbug!"
I'm trying mightily to find something to celebrate and this gave me a chuckle!



And here's my favorite group for holiday music and fun, Straight No Chaser, with a fun medley with some really great twists!!!! I love these guys because they always look like they're having a blast and it's infectious!!!!!

I feel like death today (am I ever going to feel human again?)and I'm cranky so I'm copping out and sharing some links and a favorite song.

Interesting (I thought) links:

* Caribou Barbie doesn't have a hunting license. In Ohio that's illegal and carries a hefty fine. I assume Alaska does the same. I'd like to see her busted for that -- I'd even watch her idiot show if they showed the game warden nailing her for it. LOL

* More hypocrisy here.

* Here's an excellent site about preserving Social Security. If you don't like Social Security, you won't like it. I like it -- without it, I'd be dead.

* Want to save a couple bucks? AARP has a driver safety program that might just save y'all a little money on your car insurance. If you're interested, it also has a locater to help find a class near you.

When I was in high school, one of my favorite "imports" from England was Dusty Springfield. I also liked this song a lot. Looking back while listening and watching it, I realize that its lyrics are terribly out of date but we gals hadn't been liberated yet. It's almost an anthem for being a door mat which is something I don't do well. That said, I still think she had a wonderful voice.

Thursday Random Thoughts

It's a busy, frustrating week in Kay's World which means that the more things change, the more they stay the same -- only the suspects, crimes, and misdemeanors vary. I'm trying hard to keep up with y'all as well as get I ready -- sorta -- for the holidays which I suspect are not going to be much fun. Bah!!! Humbug!!!

* As per Ronni Bennett's call to arms for Social Security. I tried to call my new "teabagger" Congressman and tell him to vote for HR 1685 per her instructions. When the 800 number didn't work, I called the House switchboard and used some of my daytime minutes and free long distance to tell him to leave Social Security alone and pass the damned bill. I told my senators the same. My sainted grandpa used to say, "If it ain't broke. don't fix it." Social Security is solvent so of course the greedy GOP wants to get their sleazy claws on it and fill their pockets. Raise hell!

* God/Buddha/Yahweh/Allah or whatever y'all call the Big Guy must have loved idiots -- he made so many of them. And we're reminded of this daily when we read the news.

* Note to Willy: Word on the street is predicting that your Hogs are gonna play my Buckeyes in the Sugar Bowl. I wish both teams well and think it will be an excellent game but you know who's gonna win and their colors are Scarlet and Gray! :)

* Just when I thought the birthers had pretty much shut up, this idiot decides to fight with Anderson Cooper. There are fools and there are damned fools and this guy is the latter. One of my ex-husband's favorite lines when discussing politics is "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullsh*t" and I think that applies to the birthers.

* What galls me most is that all of the crap going on is because -- my stars and garters!! -- we elected a black man! Does anyone remember that his mother (who raised him) was white? And that his grandparents, who took over when his mom died, were white. AND he grew up in Hawaii -- the most multi-cultural, multi-racial state in the Union. From what I can see and have read, Hawaiians cannot afford to be racist because families that have a so-called "pure line" are rare. Ignorance is bliss, I guess, but dammit, I think it's time that these racist idiots "man up", grow up, and shut up. I'm not naive enough to believe that there's no racial/ethnic problems in Hawaii but I suspect it's not a big deal because I haven't noticed any shouting in the news in the news or blogosphere.

* The funniest (and sadly far too true) thing I've read on Sarah Palin is this at Moscow News (Pravda). I love it when he refers to her "the former Governess of Alaska." I don't think it was a mistake in translation, do you?

* The best thing (and most intelligent) I've read on Sarah Palin is by CNN Senior Contributor Ed Rolins:

"If you want to be a player, go to school and learn the issues. Put smart people around you and listen to them. If you want to be taken seriously, be serious. You've already got your own forum. If you want to be a serious presidential candidate, get to work. If you want to be an imitator of Ronald Reagan, go learn something about him and respect his legacy.

If you want to be a gadfly, just keep doing what you're doing."

Keeping On Keeping On

I'm still fighting with this cold/whatever and am seriously tired of it. Assorted other nonsense adds to the 'fun' and do rain by the buckets pouring on -- I've had fun and, my friends, this ain't it so forgive me if I'm a bit snarky.

I get assistance with my utility bill because I'm low-income and I dutifully re-certified last month and had a long wait in line outside (which I think is the source of my current illness) and waited inside nearly all damned day last month to get things right -- or so I thought. Wrong!!!! AEP has everything all screwed up and wants me to pay nearly double the amount I'm supposed to pay and shows electricity as my primary heating source -- WRONG! I called Columbus to the Ohio office and they said to tell AEP to fix it so I did and they say our local office has to fix it. Right. I held strong and she finally told me that I needed to talk to the Public Utitlities Commission which almost sent me ballistic but, fortunately, I managed not to lose it. I called the PUCO and talked to a really nice, very helpful young lady named Maggie who checked out everything and said yes, my local agency messed up so I needed to call them which I just did and left a message for them to call. We shall see if they call back. If they don't, I just had a light bulb go off in my brain
and might have an end run through the red tape. Pray, light a candle, think good thoughts or whatever y'all do to get through hell. Thanks!!!!! In my next life I'm gonna be rich.

* Any weekend the Buckeyes win a nail-biter and I get to hear/see wonderful music, it's a good thing! Too bad such euphoria gets dashed when one returns to the real world. Sigh. Hence the today's song screamed for a sappy oldie. Sigh. Tomorrow I hope to be back to my regular nutty, rockin' self.



Whew!!!! I started this post at 2 PM while I was in 'hold mode' and it's 10 pm now. Can y'all say distractions and interruptions? The worst part is that I don't have the problem resolved there goes my day tomorrow. Sigh.

What if the Native Americans decided to rally and say that they want their their country back? Even if one buys the Bering Strait theory, the bottom line is that they were here first.

Saturday Random Thoughts

It's a pretty Saturday albeit crisp, chilly Saturday in Ohio with a glorious cloudless blue sky -- the kind of day that makes this old body smile. It's been a hell of a week and I'm hoping for a simpler one next week.

* Jeff called this morning and he and Shaughnessy will be returning from Florida long about Thursday. He asked me to make sure the cleaning lady gets things ready for them, get some stuff for him at the grocery, and that I keep Friday night open. No problem. He also said, "We need to talk." I don't know about y'all but my experience is that those four words are among the scariest words I've ever heard. They are harbingers of hard questions, difficult decisions and/or bad news in my experience and right now that isn't what I need. Sigh. Oh well. I'll get fed well.

* Y'all know that I am a huge believer in the Constitution of this country. Next week I get to do one of my favorite posts of the year: The Jefferson Muzzle Awards!!!!!! Yes!!! The top violators of the First Amendment in 2009!!! The sad news is that the every year the list of candidates grows. We have forgotten what our Founding Fathers set down to keep this country free. Given the past year, it should be a interesting albeit horrifying list.

* Tonight is symphony night. We have a guest artist and the programme is Chopin! One of my favorites! I am really looking forward to it!!! Sounds like I pull my favorite 'Audrey Hepburn dress' out of the closet!

* Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin got together this week. Scary, huh? Thelma and Louise go Tea Party.

* Quote of the Week: Obama on the new START Treaty: "I really have no response. Because last I checked, Sarah Palin's not much of an expert on nuclear issues." Did anyone recall except me that this treaty was the brain child of Ronald Reagan who wanted to eliminate nuclear weapons?

* My plan to re-organize and redecorate my blog is on hold indefinitely. I simply haven't the time to burrow through the nooks and crannies of Blogger and add the pages, widgets, etc. at the present time.

Friday Quick Note

It's been a tough week on a lot of levels. I am exhausted and don't know why because when I look around, I can't see that I've accomplished very much. I think I need to regroup and that that will be my weekend project along with keeping up with y'all. That said,it's 4:21 and I need to get some sleep.

Update and Another Song Daddy Sang

Yesterday:

I was up bright and early this morning after fasting last night and downing mucho water. I headed up to the lab that's part of the medical foundation where Doctor Maria practices medicine. (The phrase 'practice medicine' always sort of gives me a giggle. If they're just practicing, shouldn't we be scared?) Imagine my surprise when my phone rang at about 4:30 and Doctor Maria's nurse called to tell me they had my test results. Yikes!!!! I'm used to having to go back in two weeks!!!!! Wowsers!!! These folks are efficient!!!

I was told that I have a urinary tract infection and need to drink lots of water and that a prescription would be forthcoming for an antibiotic at my pharmacy. She then proceeded to tell me that my cholesterol is too high and wants to put me on medication for that, too. I hate medications -- I get weird side effects from a lot of things -- so I asked if I could go on a diet to bring it down. She is going to ask Dr. Maria if I could do that and call me in the morning.

I've been thinking about it and realized that I can't afford a lo-fat, lo-cholesterol diet. I remember when my ex-husband was on that and it wasn't cheap at all. Lean meat, fish, and fresh fruit and veggies are expensive and I cut corners on groceries so I can afford other things I need. This frustrates me terribly. Plus I'll lose weight and my clothes won't fit. Everyone already thinks I'm too thin as it is. The exercise part is hard, too, because of limited mobility from my stroke there's a lot of exercise I simply cannot do -- not to mention the expense -- and winter is coming and taking walks will not work -- I'll break a leg or something on the ice. Am I annoyed and upset? You betcha. Frankly, I didn't think I ate enough to have high cholesterol. I rarely eat a meal. My diet consists of a couple snacks a day. Why? Because I'm not hungry most of the time. Yesterday I ate a bowl of soup for supper and later had some ice cream.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad to have a doctor who is thorough and efficient but something I've learned is that what they want you to do isn't always practical. I guess I'll just have to do my best with what I have to work with -- I should be used to that but I get tired of it. Hopefully, I can find some good solutions.

On a brighter note, Volly reminded me of another song Daddy sang to us that always left us giggling. Enjoy!!!!!

Songs My Father Sang to Me

I grew up in a family that sang. My dad's family always sang at get togethers. After dinner, Aunt Eileen would sit down at the upright old upright piano with her brothers gathered around her and a medley of old favorite songs would begin with the rest of us joining in. (My best memory is my cousin Karen (age 2) mooing as we sang "Won't you Wait 'Til the Cows Come Home?" I (age 10) giggled.

My dad sang to me a lot. Unfortunately, I didn't get the singing gene and can't carry a tune in a bucket and rarely embarrass myself by letting anyone hear me sing. At age three it didn't matter and I had mastered a song my daddy sang to me a lot. One of my favorite cowboys, Gene Autry, sang this rendition.



I've written at Elder Storytelling Place about my Saturday drives with my Grandpa to see the horses as a toddler and his teaching me to sing this old, old song on our excursion around central Ohio. I chose this version because it was close to the way my Grandpa taught me. Why do people mess with good stuff?



A Favorite of my Grandma was this 1945 Ames Brothers tune that she always requested at song fests.




There were many songs throughout my life that I loved and bring back memories but the ones I learned from from my family mean the most and always bring a tear.

Update and Random Thoughts

I know, I know! I've been a bad little blogger!!!! There are a variety of reasons/distractions/assorted nonsense that have caused this and I'll spare you the gory details and just say that I've been busy and tired a lot.

* First the GOOD NEWS! I finally got to see my new doctor and am delighted with her. She is thorough, efficient, personable, and she listens and explains things!!!!! I went in with my list and she addressed as much as she could without my records. (The idiots I was seeing didn't transfer them.) She ordered tests, prescribed a couple things that are already working and gave me a scrip for my panic attack medicine. Hallelujah! When she learned that yes, I'd had a bone scan that showed a little bit of osteoporosis and was appalled that I had no medication for it. She said after she goes over my records she'll re-assess and just call in what I need. No muss; no fuss -- I like that a lot. And I think I made a very good choice.

* The travesty at Fort Hood has me very annoyed. That the base had no apparent security and that they knew that Hasan was not stable and professed to be a radical Muslim, enrages me. When my beloved daughter was based at Norfolk they had a whole battalion of Marines protecting the sailors. (Side note: I learned that she and her friends didn't go to the EM club because it was far away. Instead, they went to "the marbar", i.e., the Marines EM club because a) it was close; b) the Marines were perfect gentlemen -- so thanks to all you mamas of Marines.)

* My dear friend Rain of Rainy Day Thoughts has a wonderful blog on the recent debacle here.

* I'm still fighting over dental work and am NOT a happy camper. Sigh.

* My Buckeyes beat Penn State on Saturday. Winning in Happy Valley is always great!!! And Joe Paterno, the Penn State coach, is still coaching at age 82!!!! Wowsers!!!!! It's always a good game.

* I voted on Tuesday -- did y'all? It was an interesting and unusual election here. The races for councilman in two wards are being recounted. One ward is mine and I'm not worried about the outcome -- I know both candidates and both are really fine men who do well for their constituents. I always joke if they both run that we citizens simply can't lose. I know one of the candidates in the other ward that's recounting and I really hope he wins -- he's been a great councilman.

Well, that's about it!!!!!! I am heading over to see the symphony perform. The theme tonight is "Thrilling Beethoven" and our guest artist is the Claremont Trio. I am filled with great anticipation as Beethoven is a favorite of mine!!!

Just a Quick Sunday Post

I'm still tired from my road trip so I'm slobbing around the house in sweatpants and my nightshirt -- definitely a fashion statement on my attitude toward the world today. My good friend and very dear blogging buddy who has been with me almost since the beginning of this blog, Joy, called and we yakked about life, the universe and everything as usual on the occasions when we talk.

I'm going to get in the shower soon and go get the newspaper and maybe pop by to see Lynda and Mike before I get to work on another project or two. Then again. I might just vegetate.

On my trip I alternated radio stations between oldies and country music stations -- whichever came in clearest out in the boonies -- and one song seemed to keep coming up on the country stations. I thought it fun and liked the sentiment because it fits with my philosophy well and checked for a video when I got home. I even found one with the lyrics and that's when I realized why it's so popular here in Buckeye country. I hope you enjoy it!!!!

But me, I'm doing well

And I drop by today,
To just say thanks and pray,
I left a six-pack right there
On his grave and I said:

What about Now?

I love YouTube. The creativity and talent hidden there never ceases to amaze me. I've made friends with a few of the artists there. I introduced you to my young friend Randy who plays seriously good blues guitar a while back.

Today I'd like y'all to meet singer/music producer/songwriter Debby Turner and rainydog who calls himself a renaissance man and put together this excellent video that showcases Debby's wonderful voice, music. and song writing abilities. It left me with tears running down my cheeks. It's a beautiful collaboration of talents that really touched my heart and I wanted to share it with y'all. Cranky and Moving Slow on All Fronts

I haven't left the house since I came home Saturday night. I've been exhausted for God knows what reason and sleeping a LOT. I might drag myself out tomorrow but we shall see. This is weird for me -- I tend to like to be moving and I'm mostly a people person. I think it was the encounter with bureaucracy on Friday that rocked my world and left me drained and cranky.

I hope I can get some energy back so I write and visit y'all more. Fran and Rain both are suffering blogging blahs, so maybe 'tis the season.

Speaking of Fran, she had a fun post about 'blue' songs. Here's a "b last from the past" video of one of my favorites from my youth in the early days of rock and roll.
