Danger! Comments Cause Blog Posts!!!

My friend Elaine of Kalilily Time whose blog got me interested in the River of Stones project and made that comment: "OK. We're both rolling now. Rolling stones, get it??!!" I got it and I laughed and it set me a-thinkin' back to my misspent youth and I headed to YouTube. Here are the songs for this week:

If one is of a certain age one cannot -- cannot -- hear the words 'rolling stones' without thinking of Mick and the boys. I was in high school and I seem to recall deciding I liked them just to annoy my sister who was an ardent Beatles fan. Then again, I still prefer bad boys to the pretty ones and I still like to pull out my Rolling Stones for housework music!!! Here's a fave y'all will probably recall:

In 1965 I graduated from high school and began college and somewhere I got interested in Bob Dylan's music! This one is a favorite.

The late 60s/early 70s Soul music came to the mainstream and this Temptations hit was one of my favs.

A year or so later, my friends and I laughed and sang along with Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show.

I guess Elaine and I are the Elderblogger Rolling Stones. I don't know about her but I can't carry a tune in a bucket so don't wait for our debut CD!!!!

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!!!

Just Some Thoughts and Blast from the Past

[Note: All the videos are quite (mercifully) short!]

* I'm tired of hearing the Tea Party and the Teabaggers scream that they want their country back.

What if the Native Americans decided to rally and say that they want their their country back? Even if one buys the Bering Strait theory, the bottom line is that they were here first.

* Rush Limbaugh again confirms what a nut case he really is with this this amazingly stupid comment:

* I was wondering when someone would use this word regarding the talking heads at Faux News and they finally did . . .

From Dictionary.com: sedition: 1.incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government. 2.any action, esp. in speech or writing, promoting such discontent or rebellion.

'Nuff said.

* I've noticed that our nice young Congressman is getting a lot attention from the media deservedly. That he has a calm and rational style, shoots straight from the hip, and is kinda cute probably accounts for it. I really am proud of this bill that he introduced.

Enough of the nuttiness of the big bad world! Today is busy with assorted nonsense and bureaucracy.

A bit of humor: Jeff is barely Internet literate and learned a new trick: He has discovered YouTube and sent this oldie clip of a song we loved from the summer of 1966 when we met. Were we really ever that young? Or that thin? LOL

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!

Couch Potato Thoughts

I feel a bit better today but not great so I'm more or less a couch potato. I did, however, drag myself out to go to mass with Jeff because its intention was for his beloved mom who passed away last year about this time. I had arranged it because I really loved the Fair Bridget and am glad Jeff was here to attend with me. I wear one of her Claddagh rings that Big Alex gave in her memory so I think of her every day. She was a grand lady. As the Irish say, "God be good to her and He'd better!"

Thanks to all y'all for all the nice comments yesterday some of which left me laughing hysterically. It's nice to get Red Carpet treatment now and again and I do appreciate it.

Last night was movie night and we watched two of my favorites. "The Russia House" with Sean Connery which is probably my favorite of his films. I really think he's a better actor now that he's older. I was never a great fan of the Bond films but will argue any day that he really is the only Bond. Fortunately, Jeff agrees. We followed it with "In the Electric Mist" starring Tommy Lee Jones. Based on a novel by one of my favorite writers, James Lee Burke, they did an excellent job of adapting it to film. I usually don't watch such films because they usually ruin a perfectly good story. Despite Jones being one of my favorite actors, I wasn't certain that he was right for the hero's role but he did a wonderful job and John Goodman played the villain extremely well. Jeff hadn't seen the latter film and loved it and borrowed my copy of the book. Like me, he is always up for Connery but his favorite is "Finding Forrester" which I also love.

I hope that tomorrow I feel better and can get something accomplished. I have to do battle with bureaucracy again and don't relish the challenge. And yeah, I'm still thinking. Fortunately, Jeff is patient. He just brought lunch from Papa Gyros -- Greek salads and Pastisio! Serious yum!!!!!

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!

Not Much Today!!!!

It's been a rough couple days. My poor damaged brain is on overload. I'm trying to get some things straightened out while dealing with some hurt and disappointment. The good news is I did get some things straighten out and made progress on some projects around the house.

This song has been rattling around my brain all day!!!! It's a part of my misspent youth and probably part of yours, too!!! (Golly gee whiz!!!!! Those guys are getting old!!! And we, of course, are not!) Enjoy!!!!!

Hope y'all have a great day!!!!

Sure and Begorra! It's Saint Patrick's Day!

Saint Patrick's Day and I am missing Jeff. He is my favorite companion on this day and we have celebrated long and well now and again over the years. His sainted mother, The Fair Brigid who was born in Ireland, rolled her eyes at our antics with a twinkle in her eyes and she and Big Alex joined often joined us for a wee jar when they were younger.

That said, I was going to don my green and join my fellow sons and daughters of Hibernia for the Saint Patrick's Day Stroll and corned beef and cabbage and a green beer afterward but with my dental problems, I'll just stay h0me. Sigh.

It isn't St. Patrick's Day without my favorite Irish group: Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers so here's one my favorite songs from them. (Jeff and I were known to sing it loud and off key after a couple wee jars in our misspent youth.) Tommy and Liam -- God be good to them -- are no longer with us but I'm glad YouTube keeps their spirit and gifts alive.

Here's a song that features Tommy and I've always enjoyed.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Happy Blogging!!!!!!

Old TV -- Cowboys! (Part 1)

In the early days of television the Old West was very much present and very popular. In fact my dad pronounced one night a week 'NBC' as in "nothing but cowboys". He wasn't complaining -- he liked westerns as much as I did!

* My absolute favorite cowboy was Richard Boone as Paladin on "Have Gun will Travel". (I never did get the Paladin gun and holsters set I wanted so badly.) I think the show was more famous for it's theme song and all of us kids could sing it -- could you? -- so I included it instead of a clip.

Also, here's is Boone in one of the funniest appearances on "What's My Line" I ever saw.

* Dad and I were great fans of James Arness as Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke" This clip includes Dennis Weaver as everyone's favorite sidekick, Chester. (Note how much bigger Matt's horse is than the others -- they had to find extra large horses to accomodate Arness' height -- my kind of guy!)

The gambling Maverick brothers, Brett (James Garner) and Bart (Jack Kelly) provided comic relief in the world of TV westerns. Here's a clip with a very young Roger Moore as a guest star. Then again, have y'all seen Jim Garner lately? :)

If you don't see your favorite, there will be more next week! The abundance of "shoot 'em ups" on You Tube is astounding!!!!

Old TV -- Comedies (Part 4)

There were so many comedies that I really couldn't include them all but a couple came to mind this week that I wanted to share.

"My Little Margie" was a family favorite at our house. Her antics were always good for a giggle.

Everybody's favorite teacher was "Our Miss Brooks" -- her antics kept us laughing. In this clip, a special guest makes an appearance.

"Topper" was always a hoot as Leo G. Caroll is haunted by two charming and wacky ghosts played by Anne Jeffreys and Robert Sterling!

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll look at other genre of early television in the weeks ahead -- barring distractions, of course.

Phil's Annual Bash

It's Groundhog Day!!!!! Punxatawney Phil makes his annual prediction. If he sees his shadow, we'll have six more weeks of winter; if not expect an early spring. He's been predicting this for over 120 years.

Groundhog's Day is a tradition brought by the German immigrants who settled Pennsylvania and has its roots in legend of Candlemas which says, "For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May..."

Groundhog's Day is a significant day on my calendar because it was my paternal grandmother's birthday. My dad, the eldest, started the tradition of calling her to ask if she saw her shadow after he left home. His brothers and sisters followed suit as did those of us who followed until her death in 2001 at age 96. That's a lot of phone calls considering that she had 5 kids, a dozen grands and I lost track of the greats long ago.

I actually went to Punxatawney for Ground Hog's Day once back in the late 60s when I was young and foolish (now I'm just old and foolish.) I stopped by my fav pub after work and ran into an old friend. We started talking silliness and, after a few beers, got the "brilliant" idea that we needed to go Punxatawney for the party -- about three hours away. So we did taking along some 'road pop' and snacks. It was fun and really sort of surreal -- not as surreal as Bill Murray's time there in the movie but -- surreal. Jeff and I still laugh about it. In fact, I called him while I was writing this and asked what time we're leaving. He roared because he's down in Florida but said he'd be on the next plane here! LOL Right. Then again, maybe I need to get Shaughnessy out of the kennel so he can go with us. And yes, Jeff is still crazy after all these years! And so am I -- but y'all knew that!!!

Old TV -- Comedy (Part 1)

The advent of television brought comedy to the small screen and put a lot of actors to work. The weekly comedies drew huge audiences and we laughed a lot. For the next couple weeks we'll look at a few of what has come to be known as sitcoms.

One of the top shows was "I Love Lucy" -- I know it was a favorite at our house! I don't think anyone who grew up in the 50s can forget the theme song!!!!

Here's a classic clip from "I Love Lucy" that I know y'all will enjoy:

Okay!!!! Are y'all done laughing???? Next week we'll look at some other comedy shows!!!!!!

Old TV -- Quiz Shows (Part 3)

Game shows have been a staple of television since it's beginnings. And they appeared in many formats.

A favorite of mine was Treasure Hunt hosted by Jan Murray who was (I thought) really funny and featured glamorous prizes.

We all remember Bob Barker on the Price is Right but do you remember its original host? Do you remember flat top haircut, too?

You'll recall this young man from Nebraska who cut his television teeth as a game show host and took his announcer to the top with him!

Next week we'll look at couple really challenging quiz shows and the fallout from them.

Old TV -- Quiz Shows (Part One)

Very popular in television's infancy were quiz shows of various types and What's My Line?, one of the most popular shows, lasted from 1950 to 1967 with pretty much with the same emcee and panelists the entire twenty-seven years. A favorite feature on the show was the Mystery Guest -- a celebrity who would be most likely recognized easily by the panel. The panel was blindfolded and the guest attempted to disguise his/her voice. I had a ball going through all the videos looking for the ones I thought y'all would enjoy but it it took a lot of time because it was so hard to choose. If you don't see your favorite '50s stars, check YouTube -- they have lots of them there!

The one . . . the only . . .

She was still on her very first marriage (I think) and I'm guessing that she was wearing a maternity frock.

Good eeeeeeevening . . .

Hope you have as much fun as I did!!!!

Blast from the Past: Old TV

The year 1950, when I had reached the awesome age of three, was quite a year for our family:

a) We moved from Greenwich, Ohio to Grafton, Ohio .

b) Our family grew with the birth of my sister.

c) We got a brand spankin' new 1950 Plymouth.

d) We got a television with the biggest screen available -- about 12 inches (guessing here).

And again I'm guessing that Dad got a healthy raise in pay when he changed railroads for my frugal parents to buy a new car and a TV. I didn't like the last because it meant that little Kay had to be quiet and sit still. Neither was my most stellar attribute. And I've never really learned to be quiet. LOL

Eventually, I started watching television and mostly found it boring but eventually found some to my liking. I liked cowboys a lot. My favorite was The Cisco Kid. For some reason he and Pancho caught my imagination and attention and sometimes I wonder if somehow it spawned my later interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. This this the last segment of five in one the of episodes. I chose it because it had their signature ending which y'all may recall -- I hope.

Another thing that caught my attention on television was the commercials. This was a favorite of mine from 1952 and if y'all are like me, you'll sing along as if it were yesterday!!!! Unless, of course, you weren't born yet!!!!

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuwahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Some Good Advice for Elders

In case no one noticed, May is Senior Citizens month (while I'd like that changed to Elders Month, I'm not going to war . . . yet.) so I'm going to do a few posts on aging now and then.

I receive a newsletter via email twice each month from the Ohio Department of Aging called "Aging Issues". It always is interesting and informative and relevant for elders and it keeps me informed of programs and services available to Ohio elders. They also have an excellent website. I enjoy both so much that I wonder if other states do something similar or if they even have a Department of Aging like we do. What does your state do for elders?

I think that most of us find driving a bigger hassle as we get older. Our days of playing Mario Andretti are over. "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" that Jan & Dean made famous in our youth is a rarity. Heck! I bet Jan & Dean have slowed down a lot, too. I think I'm happier in little Miss Ruby than I ever was in the 383 4-barrel convertible of my misspent youth and I'd rather dawdle along city streets or country roads than join the terrors of the Ohio Turnpike or the Interstate highway system. I swear they try to eat Miss Ruby and I alive.

In fact, I'm exploring an alternate route for my trip to Toledo to avoid the latter. I like seeing the little burgs and stopping at Mom & Pop restaurants for coffee or lunch. I don't think that faster is always better. Getting there is half the fun for me. And not having a big fat semi on my bumper lowers the stress. 'Sides all you see on the Turnpike are signs about the next service plaza while you're doing what I call the "orange barrel polka". Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way around the huge new bridge across the Maumee River so it will be "white knuckle" time.

This trip I plan to take pictures of the house where I grew up -- I might even knock on the door and talk to the people who live there now -- and I'm going to stop in Greenwich (pronounced 'green-witch' not 'grenitch') where we lived when I was born and look around and take photos. I'll probably also wander around the Point and see what's changed. I've promised Barb that we will go visit my dad's grave and take flowers -- she doesn't drive anymore. I'm going to have to be stoic -- I didn't cry through the whole thing when Dad died until the honor guard fired their salute at the cemetery -- and then I fell apart and sobbed uncontrollably. On another level, I think I know why that happened but I'm not going to go there.

All that said, I'm looking forward to my 'sentimental journey' and here's Doris Day with her first #1 hit when she sang with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. Enjoy!!!! My dad used to sing this song to me.

Happy Easter!!!!!!

I hope y'all are having a really wonderful Easter day!!!!! After Mass this morning, I'll just be chilling out for the day. I'll try to call out to my son's because it's not only Easter, it's my eldest grandson's seventh birthday!!!!! He's an April baby like me -- his birthday falls on Easter every few years. It can be a hassle having your birthday on a holiday as any Christmas child will tell you but least Easter doesn't come on the same day every year.

Here's a photo of little Kay at age four for my first visit to the Easter Bunny -- probably at LaSalle's or The Lion Store in downtown Toledo -- two of my mother's favorite haunts back then. Since I have on my winter coat and the hat my Aunt Marion crocheted for me, I'm guessing that we were having an ugly April in Ohio just like the past week or so. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Sighhhhhh

Best wishes to all y'all as you celebrate the holiday!!!!!! I hope you do so with the ones you love best and love you best!!!!!

Little Kay Surfaces

In my fit of nostalgia this past week, I got out the photos and found the few pictures I have. Knowing my mother as I do, all traces of me are gone from the many she had -- just she did with photos of my dad. I'm not sure if my stepmom has any old photos or not but she promised that she is collecting a lot of Dad's things for me and I think she will. Y'all can embiggen them, as Judy says by clicking on them. Here are some baby and toddler pictures

Baby Kay at about three months old. And this is as close as anyone has gotten to taking a nude photo of me -- and it was the last time I was fat!!!! LOL

Baby Kay at about 6-8 months old. I'm guessing that it was Saturday and I'd gone to go see the horses with my Grandpa cause I was wearing my overalls and locket -- a gift from him at my birth. (I wrote about this on The Elder Storytelling Place a while back.) I'm not certain who was holding me but I look pretty crabby so it wasn't my Grandpa.

Here I am at about one and a half with my favorite doll, Judy -- all my dolls were named Judy. She looks like she was very loved. (giggle)

At two and a half I was considered quite accomplished because I could ride my tricycle -- long legs helped I'm sure. The curls were natural and were a dark golden blond.

At four, I delighted in swinging on the tree swing my dad put up at my maternal grandparents' dairy farm in Wisconsin. I scared the hell outta my Grandma by going too high and jumping off a-flying!!!! And no, I didn't get hurt.

Hope y'all get a laugh or two out of seeing the little dickens I once was!!!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!!!

More Nostalgia . . . My Sister and I

My sister Debbie was born in 1950 when I was three. It took a couple weeks for me to stop calling her my baby brother as my dad had kept telling me throughout my mom's pregnancy that they were getting me a baby brother to play with and, on her birth, I soon found out that she was a sister and that as a playmate she was pretty much a washout. Even when she got older we were not soul mates but we mostly got along unless my mother got involved and she reverted to "mama's girl". Fortunately, my dad seemed to prefer me. I looked like him. Right now I can look in the mirror and I see my Aunt Eileen who my mom hated and said was ugly.

Deb liked dolls and girlie stuff. I liked games and books and sports. She was my mother's perfect child who never sassed or misbehaved and always got straight As. I was a rowdy lil' hell-raiser who spent a lot of time day-dreaming (or chatting with my classmates) but still got mostly As except for math (which I still hate to this day). She was the pretty one. I was too tall, too gawky, and too skinny. Debbie always had a boyfriend -- even in kindergarten. I didn't date until I went away to college and even then rarely "went steady" with anyone and that still hasn't changed. Still we were sort of friends. She was maid of honor in my wedding. I taught her how to cook.

She died on Thanksgiving Day in 1972 in a small plane crash that also took the lives of her boyfriend, his younger brother, and his brother's girlfriend. Three days later I gave birth to my son -- my mother's first grandchild. Talk about difficult. I was just glad that he was a boy. My mother never recovered from her death and I really believe she resents that I'm alive and her favorite isn't. My brother who was born when I was fifteen and she was twelve was too much like our dad to reach favorite status. To listen to my mom, my sister was a saint. It's really quite sad that she didn't appreciate our strengths but oh well . . . Mike and I are survivors and tough enough to get through without mom's dubious blessing.

While I was waxing nostalgic about my lost youth, I recalled more differences between us. In 1962 when the British invasion began she hung a poster of the Beatles in our room to my chagrin.

I retaliated with what Mom called an ugly photo of The Stones. I never said they were pretty but I liked their sound!!! Still do!!!

1962 was also a big year for medical shows and Debbie taped a photo of Dr. Kildare
on her side of the mirror over our dresser . . .

. . .while Ben Casey glared at me as I combed my hair in the morning.

Both of these instances showed her propensity for pretty while I appreciated (and still do) intensity. Hard to believe we grew up with the same mother. Then again, in high school my son liked Rap (he has since recovered) and Kate was into jazz and classical. (Guess which one was asked to turn her stereo UP? LOL)

Thanks for letting me share these memories with y'all!!!

AND what about y'all? Stones or Beatles? Kildare or Casey?

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!

A Touch of Nostalgia . . .

I've been waxing nostalgic of late and I'm not certain why but my lost youth has been very much with me and I'm recalling roads not taken. I am a member of the infamous Class of '65 and Cass Elliott of The Mamas and the Papas was probably my favorite female rock vocalist at that point in my life. One of my favorites was her wonderful rendition of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" and here she is with Dick Smothers . . .

And here's a retrospective on "The Mamas and the Papas" -- and I agree with Michelle that Cass Elliott left us too soon.

Thanks for letting me share these with you!!!!!!

Sunday, Sunday Random Thoughts

It's been a tough couple weeks with all the upheaval with my job, the medical tests and assorted other nonsense. I think the operative phrase is above. I have been sleeping a lot and really on a downer. The list of those who have managed to annoy me is too lengthy to list and would bore y'all anyway so I'll spare you that and just share a couple things that have caught my attention.

* It's sunny and in the 40s in Ohio!!!! The ice on which I've damn near killed myself is gone and I'm going to give a big fat raspberry to our city's street department for their horrible disregard for our 'hood. I'm thinking I'm going to be at city council Monday night to kvetch. And Miss Ruby is going to get a much-needed bath!

* Speaking of city council, I'm dropping some research off for my councilman. Our idiot mayor (who proves The Peter Principle) wants to install those traffic cameras from Redflex. Y'all might be familiar with them. If you go through a light on the yellow, a month later you might get a $100 traffic ticket in the mail AND if you elect to question it, they slap and extra $20 on it. A right-thinking supreme court judge in Minnesota declared these cameras unconstitutional and now the city of Minneapolis has to cough up 2.6 million bucks to the 14,000 drivers who were fleeced by this scam. Whatta guy! I don't want "Big Brother" watching me and I suspect they can use these for purposes more nefarious as well. Do you have or did you have these in your town? I have visions of a rash of rear end collisions because people don't want a ticket. Sigh.

* I'm going to physical therapy twice a week. It makes my arm feel better but I'll be damned if I think it's solving anything. I keep forgetting to do my exercises so I'm not helping things much.

* I got the DVD of a film called "Mozartballs" which features two of my good blogging buddies, Steph of Incurable Insomniac and Lynette of Shades of Life in F Major. I really loved it. And I still haven't figured out why it struck a chord (no pun intended) in my soul. I need to watch it again. The website is really well done and I recommend you take a look.

* I went to our monthly First Friday event this past Friday night. I didn't have fun. Marcia invited a friend to join us who really didn't seem to like the arts so we wound up drinking. Argh! Now I'm not averse to quaffing a brew or two when I go there but I am there to see what's going on at the various events that are featured. If I had met them instead of riding with Marcia, I could have done my usual thing and gone a-wandering. Let's just say that I learned a lesson.

* Word is that I won't be working after June. Sigh. I did, however, have an epiphany while talking with a prospective employer on the phone the other day. I realized that I will be able to manage. I have survived on less than I'll have so I just crossed that off my worry list. I felt better with that realization. If I can get a couple days a week somewhere, I'll be delighted. If I don't I'll have more time for other projects that are languishing -- or find some new ways to waste time.

* Yesterday (Saturday) was my dad's birthday. Had he lived he would have been eighty-four. He's been gone for twenty-four years. I called my stepmom as I knew he would be very much on her mind. She was delighted and we had a nice talk about him. Both of us swear he's watching us. It's really weird.

* Just a caveat: please don't put groaners in comments. If you wish to have a groaner here, please send it to the email addy in the side bar. I'm trying to keep this feature afloat for y'all and it detracts from those who make the effort to support it. Thank you!

Well, enough kvetching for today. I'm off to get the Sunday paper and see if Lynda and Mike are around. AND I'm going to try to get around to see y'all when I get back. I do apologize but I've been exhausted and have to force myself to do anything.

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!

Update from the Deep Freeze

The city is closed down more or less. The office is closed and I am off today and a very Cranky Old Broad. Poor Miss Ruby is parked out back and looks like a snow sculpture. I'd take a picture but the freezing rain this morning that added insult to injury has turned our city into an ice skating rink and as much as I love y'all and enjoy entertaining you, I'm not going out there. It's ugly. It's currently snowing hard again and will probably continue throughout the afternoon.

My favorite columnist from our local paper, Charita Goshay, had quite a bit to say about our 'lovely' weather this morning with her tongue planted firmly in her cheek. Here's an excerpt but y'all can read the rest here. I guarantee you a smile and maybe even a giggle or two.

"On Sunday night, a handful of motorists in Perry Township reported seeing mysterious, vertical streaks of light in the sky that changed colors; some streaks lasted as long as 10 minutes.

Explanations have included ice crystals, or an asteroid that has entered the earth’s atmosphere. But what if it’s something else ... a close encounter?

Then again, do we really want dealings with any alien dumb enough to visit Ohio in the dead of January — especially this January? Didn’t he look down?

We’ve gotten more hits this winter than a centerfold’s Web site.

Really, we should have known this was coming. Our regional weather forecast in the almanac reads, “Ha! Good luck.”

FREEZING OVER

So, just how cold has it been?

The rowdy squirrels in my yard, are wearing rabbit.

On the way to work, I saw a dog in pants.

There’s a rumor that Satan offered to open the Gates of Hell to give us a break — but since Barack Obama was elected president, guess what froze over?

If the phenomenon in Perry Township indeed proves to be extraterrestrial, one thing is certain: The alien is male, because he has to be lost. No living being who didn’t already have family here, or a kid in a wrestling, basketball or swimming tournament, would purposely visit Ohio in January."

I hope the kids are in shoveling mode later today. The plows are working overtime and, of course, getting Miss Ruby shoveled out will be a challenge with the mounds of the white you-know-what piled at the end of the drive. Sigh.

That said, I'm going back to bed. I feel like hell.
