Friday the 13th
I don't buy into this sorta thing but I thought the graphic kinda cute!!!!
My experience is that my life can be disastrous whether it's a Friday or the 13th or any other day of the year and I just muddle through as best I can and yeah, I hated the movies.
That said, it's late on Friday the 12th and I'm exhausted after a long and tiring day.

A Bit of Silliness . . . (but I think it's food for thought!)
I'm still buried with my book project (it's no longer a project -- it's become a mission) but I'm trying to keep up with y'all as well as the antics occurring in the world so I'm indulging in some silliness in the interest of maintaining a wee modicum of sanity in a world that's gone mad.
Kent McKamy, whose emails help me maintain a modicum of sanity, sent along an excellent and funny piece that he received that not only made me laugh, but gave me food for thought. He talked about collective nouns -- you know: a gaggle of geese, a flock of sheep, a school of fish, and my favorite: an exaltation of larks. However, he included one that I really think is pertinent to today's political climate: a congress of baboons and that, my friends, set me a-thinkin'. And henceforth, I shall refer to Speaker of the House, John Boehner, as the Chief Baboon.

Today's the day!!!!!!!!! Gooooooooo Bucks!!!!!!!
Today at noon The Ohio State University Buckeyes will meet the University of Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes are the favorite by 19-24 points according to the bookies and the pundits but anyone who has followed this rivalry for as may years as I have knows that all that goes out the window when these two teams meet!!!! I don't know about y'all but I'd rather cheer for a bunch of nuts than a pack of predators! Just my rather biased take.
Then again, I am a born and bred Buckeye whose family was in Ohio before it was a state. (The joke is that we were in Ohio when there was just us and the Indians! That's stretching it because the Moravians were here before we were.)
At any rate, here's the Ohio State Band as they accompany Coach Bill Tressel and the team as they sing "Carmen Ohio" earlier this season after their win against Minnesota. I've included the lyrics for the uninitiated. Let's hope the outcome is the same today! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Carmen Ohio"
(Alma Mater)
Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise
And songs to Alma Mater raise
While our hearts rebounding thrill
With joy which death alone can still
Summer's heat or winter's cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely (truly) show
How firm thy friendship ... O-HI-O!

Buckeye Week!!!!!
This from my Some People Really Take Fandom to New Levels Department (Five Bucks says the guy who did this is single.):

And if you couldn't get tickets (a herculean task at best) or if you hate the cold and will be watching at home and are having one the many parties being held across the state, tomorrow will be the perfect day to start getting your buckeyes ready. What are buckeyes, you ask? Wellllll, buckeyes are the fruit of the buckeye tree which is the State Tree of Ohio. Buckeyes from the tree are inedible for humans. However, someone wiser than I long ago came up with a wonderful imitation!!!! And being the magnanimous sort, I am providing y'all with a really easy recipe!!!!
Buckeye Recipe (makes 100)
1 1/2 lbs. powdered sugar
1/2 lb. margarine
1 lb. creamy peanut butter
1 large package chocolate chips
1/3 slab paraffin
Mix sugar, margarine and peanut butter together. Chill in refrigerator overnight. Roll above mixture into small balls about 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter and place on cookie sheets. Chill in refrigerator overnight.
In a double boiler, melt chocolate chips. Add paraffin and mix. Use a toothpick to spear each ball and lower into chocolate leaving a small area at the top . . . the eye of the buckeye. Place on cookie sheet to cool and get firm. Use finger to 'smooth over' toothpick hole. Keep refrigerated. YUM!!!!!!!! ENJOY!!!
Here's TBDBITL as they line up on the ramp entrance for the pregame show. Note: When they renovated the 'Shoe, they made sure to include a ramp for the band so as not to change their entrance routine.) Watch as they get ready to take the field -- the players aren't the only ones who are 'up' for the game!
Here you can see TBDITL as they perform their signature entrance to the 'Shoe. The song they play is The Buckeye Battle Cry aka fight song!
Gooooooooooooooo Buckeyes!!!!!!!!

Good News!!!! So Let There Be Music!!!!
Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield is not an Ohio State alumni and swears this strip wasn't meant as a slam at Michigan's Wolverines and I believe him. However, the loyal Buckeye fans love it whatever his intent.

Here's TBDBTITL playing my friend and fellow Buckeye fan Joared of Along the Way and my favorite song in their repertoire: The Official Rock Song of the State of Ohio!

Six Random Things About Moi:
- I call myself a renegade Catholic, i.e., I do it my way. If I ever tell a priest how I really feel, there's a damned good chance I'll be excommunicated. Then again, a priest I like told me they don't do that much anymore. My deathbed confession should be a hoot.
- I became a liberated woman at the age of eight when I came home from school hollering because Sister wouldn't let me have a sign-up sheet for Little League. My dad explained that girls don't play baseball and I cried and through my tears, I said, "That's not fair! I play better than most of the boys on the block." (Side note: At that moment little Gloria Steinem was growing up a few miles away from me. I think it was the water in Toledo in the 50s.)
- The Great American Novel is languishing on my hard drive. Some day I might even finish it.
- I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat. I don't trust politicians or bureaucrats of any stripe as a general rule. Mark Twain said: "No man's life, liberty, or property is safe while the legislature is in session." Old Mark was probably right except he failed to include the Oval Office in that statement. Just my take.
- Unlike that liar Bill Clinton, I inhaled. Not often because I wasn't too impressed with the effects but I did inhale.
- The best word to describe me is "survivor". It doesn't matter what happens to me, I survive -- so far. LOL
Now I am tagging the following: Cowtown Pattie, Rain, M.E., Joared, Betty, Claudia.

You Should Be a Politician |
Confident, assertive, and dedicated - you know what you want in life and how to get it. Stubborn and opinionated, you can stand your ground... even if it's unpopular. And while you have strong views, you never overwhelm people with your opinions. A true charmer, you subtly influence people into seeing things your way. You do best when you: - Work according to your own rules - Can change the world with what you do You would also be a good lawyer or talk show host. |
Would y'all believe it? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!! Problem is I'm not sure I wanna grow up!!!!!

Kay's Wonderful World of Weird Words #5
trichotillomania: (n.) the abnormal desire to pull out one's hair.
I think of it as a disease brought on by people who drive us nuts!
Cockaigne: (n.) An imaginary land of ease and luxury.
Remove a couple letters and you get a substance that takes you to that land. Coincidence?
quisquilian: (adj.) worthless, trifling.
This one could be useful in describing a lot of the members of Congress -- don't y'all agree?
heliolatry: (n.) sun worship
Compulsive tanners practice this.
titivate: (v.) to make or become smart or spruce.
Using this in conversation could cause some raised eyebrows! I think George Carlin would have liked it!
quotidian: (adj.) 1) Occurring or returning daily; as, a quotidian fever. 2) Of an everyday character; ordinary; commonplace.
I think y'all will all agree that the words here could not be called quotidian.
And last but not least, I'll leave with a word to think about . . .
callipygian: having well-shaped buttocks. The Kay heads to her corner and puts on her Thinking Cap.

The London Monster
By the 15th century, the Templar Knights had disappeared, but deep in the bowels of the British Museum in a case well sealed and protected lies a strange memorial to their impact on the city of London. London of the early 12th century was on its way to becoming an impressive city, but its life & its blood was the Thames River. Without the river commerce would grind to a halt as the people of London discovered to their horror in 1216.
The first ships seemed simply to have disappeared, but the monster wasted little time in this caution. Soon, many Londoners had seen the gaping maw licked by flames dragging a hapless crew to its death. It was a fire salamander, and in the Autumn of 1216 it was estimated to be 40 feet long with jaws that gaped 10 feet wide.
By the spring of 1217, the monster was no longer a nuisance -- it was a deadly plague. No boat could navigate the Thames. No raft was small enough, no ship was large enough to resist the demon of the Thames. Worse, the beast was growing! The latest reports called it 70 feet long with jaws opening 15 feet. Our instinct is to discount this absurd growth, and yet few could impeach its source. He, our source, enters the story in August of 1217. London had begged, prayed, blasphemed, and killed in desperate attempts to exorcise or appease their curse to no avail.
On June 14, 4 men painted themselves with the Devil's Cross and proclaimed themselves the Dark Priests of the Beast. They built a ship and doused it in oil and then they sailed it down the river. Dark Priests they may have been, but they died screaming like any man. On July 28, London sent three virgins (the youngest not yet 13) down the Thames to the monster. It was thought that this would appease the evil god: the monster's hunger exceeded even this atrocity.
On August 23, our source received his summons. His given name is lost in his chosen name: Honorus. He was a Templar Knight and possibly a saint. That morning, he was commanded to destroy the beast. London in fear and desperation had turned to their most jealous weapon: the Templars -- warrior monks who fought with the fierce, perhaps fanatic, frenzy of the devout. The city had exhausted all other options; the monks were its last hope, and Honorus was the greatest of the Knights.
The battle was truly a footnote to his preparation. Honorus ventured into the woods upstream from London. He forsook shelter, clothing, food, and sleep for four days, meditating on the coming struggle. When the four days ended, he stalked and killed a stag without weapon or aid. With the skin of the stag hemmed clothing; from its flesh he regained his strength; and with its guts, he lashed five logs into a raft fit for his purpose. Honorus set the raft in motion.
He had outfitted himself with the only item he would use in this fight which had not come out of the forest with him: A sword of Spanish steel, blue as the sky, lay in his lap. Soon, he felt the swell of the water disturb his raft: the monster was coming, yet he sat unmoving. The beast broke the surface. No human is perfect; a splinter of the collapsing raft clipped Honorus' left foot as he leaped into the water. He had timed his jump slightly too late, but no matter, the injury will not be important until after the battle.
The monster was above the water only momentarily; time enough for Honorus to drive his sword between two of its scales. The monster thrashed in pain, turning its exposed flesh from the steaming water. Honorus was lifted from the water as the beast rolled. He gauged his stroke and leaped, striking the monster's eye. Angered and half blinded, the beast threw Honorus into the river and grasped him in its immense jaws. Honorus swam quickly past the teeth into the monster's mouth. Inside, the questing tongue scalded his feet as he searched for purchase again and we shall ignore this injury for now.
Once he had braced himself inside the beast's mouth, pushing with all his strength against the slowly rising tongue, he took aim. Honorus had time to make only one thrust. When his journal recalls these events, it attributes Honorus' "luck" in this battle to aid from the Divine. We do not wish to detract from the glory of God, but surely He will not envy His servant. Is it coincidence that Honorus' blade struck true to the brain? Honorus had already studied carefully the anatomy of the salamander a week before he was summoned to fight the beast.
Did Honorus not know that the water's rush against the beast's exposed flank would cause it such pain? In his journal, "August 24: And once I am atop the beast and it has rolled from the water, where then to strike?" Two weeks after Honorus was told to lift the curse of London, the beast was dead.
The next day London celebrated Honorus; the town would live because of him. Three days later, gratitude had disappeared. The body of the beast had lodged itself firmly in the mire less than half a mile downstream of London. Although it was yet intact (perhaps due to its incredible armor), it would surely soon rot. While not so great a terror, the rotting beast would be almost as dangerous as the live beast, attracting disease and scavengers. No ship could move the carcass.
The people of London called upon Honorus. Honorus' solution was difficult but practical, and he began as soon as he had retrieved his sword. He fasted for two days and then heated the cooked meat of the huge salamander and fasted for a third day. When he suffered no ill effects, Honorus began dissecting the beast.
With the help of London, Honorus soon had all the usable meat and intestines of the dead beast transformed into sausage. A bizarre solution it was, but a good one. The sausage was soon discovered to be excellent and to keep easily for very long periods of time. Even more important, the sausage rapidly became incredibly popular throughout England and much of Europe. It began to re-establish the fame of London's trade after the Hiatus of the Beast.
Still, Honorus has one final contribution to history. It became vital that everyone knew from whence the incredible sausage of London came, and thus we return to Honorus' injuries. After the battle with the live beast and the crisis of the dead beast, Honorus took time to recover. Six weeks after he was first summoned, he was dressing the injuries on his feet. The problems of London were known to him. As he dipped a strip of paper-like gauze into a healing salve, he had a thought. One week later, each sausage shipped from London carried a fascinating new development: a label.
Just as the gauze dried and closed on Honorus' foot, the parchment around these sausages was attached; and all would know the fame of London from each link she sold. In the end, despite all his other feats, it was this idea, the product label, that survived Honorus. In tribute to this advance, the British Museum houses the only known surviving label from Honorus' sausages. And although even the tough gut of the Beast has long since faded to dust, the label may still be read.
If our reader could go to the Museum and enter the Medieval wing's most treasured collection, he or she could still read, in faint letters, the Label of Honor:
"It Was The Beast Of Thames, It Was The Wurst Of Thames."

Random Sunny Saturday Thoughts
* My hip is better. My diagnosis was correct and I am on the mend. The new office chair that I bought a few months ago was attempting to fall apart and throwing my hip out of kilter. Soooo yesterday when I finished work I headed over to Massillon to a big office furniture store and explained my plight to the nice lady who owns it. She said, "I'll bet you went to OfficeMax or some place similar, didn't you" Guilty as charged. She then explained, everything I ever will need to know about choosing an office chair. There was a wonderful wide selection of chairs and I pointed to one I really liked the looks of and was told it cost $1,000. Just goes to show that my eye for quality is alive and well. Champagne taste and a beer budget c'est moi. I finally found one that was wonderfully comfortable, fit my budget, and even matched my decor. Her helper carried it out to my car. I stopped at Pete's for a late lunch on my way home before heading home to entertain my neighbors as I wrestled it up the steps and walk to my front door. I dragged it in the house, cleaned it up a tad and adjusted the height. Ahhhhhhhhhh! No pain!
* Guess what? I finally mustered the courage to drive on the freeway!!! I didn't even get a hint of panic attack. I am proud of myself. It means I can go visit Uncle Joe and Aunt Ingrid up north. It means I can travel a bit. It also means I can get places quicker burning less gas. I am smiling.
* Tonight is a rare night out for the Kay. Our wonderful symphony is playing Brahms. I am excited about it. I get to get dressed up and hear beautiful music -- it doesn't get much better than that!
* I apologize for missing an installment of "How I Got to Be Me" this week. Pain slows me down. Next week it will return. I do appreciate all the support, love, and encouragement y'all have demonstrated. Thank you for making this effort easier for me. A special thanks to Virginia DeBolt of First 50 Words for critiquing it for me. In case y'all didn't know, she's written several books on writing so her opinions are truly excellent. Stop by and visit her site if you need to jump start your muse.
* I'm delighted that The Friday Groaner got a reprieve! I hope y'all will send some more!!!
* Here's a Maxine I hadn't seen before that really gave me a hearty laugh!!!!!!!!

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!!!!!!!! I'm wading through (and attempting clean) the mess I call home and gathering laundry for washing day!!!

Snowbound Saturday Random Thoughts
* The primary and overload in other areas interrupted the this week's installment of How I Got to Be Me and next week I will resume it. It's come down to that I'm going to have to do this part in two installments because it's pretty complex.
* I'm looking at this past week's Democratic primary as a truly unattractive event. Then again, the powermongers will always be with us but I'll never really come to terms with that. I don't understand them. I've got this Mary Poppins kind of ideal that we get along and work together for the common good. Yes I am, at times, naive.
* It's basketball season and I'm cheering on the Buckeyes and the Cleveland Cavaliers! I've had an interest in basketball since I was tiny. My 6'3" daddy played semi-pro when I was small and I remember watching him play. It explains why I'm 5'10" (and shrinking), too. The Buckeyes' big man is 7-foot-tall freshman Kostas Koufos who hails from our fair city and is an alumnus of my and my kids' suburban high school. It's been predicted that he'll be an NBA draft pick in June but word is he wants to get his education first. The Cavs are lead by two NE Ohioans: LeBron James from Akron, just north of us, and Eric Snow who is from here. Both are truly fine young men who are well-known as much for their good works in their communities, particularly children, as they are for their prowess on the court. It does my heart good to see this. The Michael Vicks of this world annoy me greatly.
* If y'all are interested, check out My Damn Channel -- a quirky site with all sorts of weirdness. I particularly like the stuff that Harry Shearer of The Simpsons and Spinal Tap fame does. My favorites are The Silent Debates -- they make about as much sense as the real ones.
Hope y'all are having a great weekend!!!

This year is no exception except that we actually are looking great for the playoffs and obviously Browns Fever is in high gear! I have a touch of it for now but it won't really kick in until the Buckeyes kick you-know-what in New Orleans!!! It's gonna be a Happy New Year in Ohio!
