Sighing Saturday

I reversed my schedule today and went a-visiting y'all before I started today's post and, as usual, "the best laid plans . . ." upset my day and company is coming fairly soon because, "We gotta talk." Soooooo I have to make a fresh pot of coffee (of which my mug will be laced with Bailey's) and put on my best game face/mean girl attitude -- I hate when that happens.

This means no post today but here's 34 seconds of Bill Maher slaying sacred cows:

Hasta Manana!

George Carlin RIP 1937-2008

It's Friday and it's been a busy week on too many levels. I think it's a good day for some comic relief, don't y'all?

George Carlin died June 22, 2008. He was my favorite comedian and kept me laughing at his irreverent and often profane commentary on our society -- both sacred and mundane. Here's a favorite bit from his earlier years:

More important is his razor sharp commentary on our country in the time preceding his death and how prophetic it was. He made us think about how we viewed the world and laugh in spite of it. Unfortunately, he too often ever so right. In his later years, his voice became tinged with anger and all too right. Here's a clip from 2005 that's almost apocalyptic as his words are becoming a reality:

I miss George. He was one of a kind.

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!!!!!

Kent McKamy of kentsusdrive sent this along. It isn't really a groaner but I roared with laughter -- and groaned a tad, too -- when I read it and I thought y'all might get a good laugh too!!!!

An 80-year-old Italian man goes to the doctor for a check-up. The doctor is amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, "How do you stay in such great physical condition?"

"I’m Italian and I am a golfer" says the old guy, "and that’s why I'm in such good shape. I'm up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a glass of vino, and all is well."

"Well . . ." says the doctor, "I'm sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your father when he died?"

"Who said my father's dead?"

The doctor is amazed. "You mean you're 80 years old and your father’s still alive. How old is he?"

"He’s 100 years old!" says the Old Italian golfer. "In fact he golfed with me this morning, and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had a little vino and that's why he's still alive. He's Italian and he’s a golfer, too."

"Well, that's great!" the doctor says, "But I'm sure there’s more to it than that. How about your father’s father? How old was he when he died?"

"Who said my Nonno's dead?"

Stunned, the doctor asks, "You mean you're 80 years old and your grandfather's still living! Incredible, how old is he?"

"He’s 118 years old,' says the old Italian golfer."

The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, "Soooo, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?"

"No, Nonno couldn't go this morning because he's getting married today."

At this point the doctor is close to losing it. "Getting married!! Why would a 118-year-old guy want to get married?"

"Who said he wanted to???"

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!

Old TV -- Comedies (Part 4)

There were so many comedies that I really couldn't include them all but a couple came to mind this week that I wanted to share.

"My Little Margie" was a family favorite at our house. Her antics were always good for a giggle.

Everybody's favorite teacher was "Our Miss Brooks" -- her antics kept us laughing. In this clip, a special guest makes an appearance.

"Topper" was always a hoot as Leo G. Caroll is haunted by two charming and wacky ghosts played by Anne Jeffreys and Robert Sterling!

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

We'll look at other genre of early television in the weeks ahead -- barring distractions, of course.

Laughter as Medicine

I am so stressed out and depressed from what's been happening in our country that I didn't even want to post today. I wandered over to YouTube to see if I could find something fun to no avail and I finally just typed 'laughter' in the search box and found the video on Laughter Yoga below that features John Cleese of Monty Python fame. It's a great mood brightener and I suspect that Dr. Kataria is onto something and y'all can read more about it here. I was impressed!

Okay tell me you didn't laugh!!!!!!

Old TV -- Comedy (Part 1)

The advent of television brought comedy to the small screen and put a lot of actors to work. The weekly comedies drew huge audiences and we laughed a lot. For the next couple weeks we'll look at a few of what has come to be known as sitcoms.

One of the top shows was "I Love Lucy" -- I know it was a favorite at our house! I don't think anyone who grew up in the 50s can forget the theme song!!!!

Here's a classic clip from "I Love Lucy" that I know y'all will enjoy:

Okay!!!! Are y'all done laughing???? Next week we'll look at some other comedy shows!!!!!!

Ohhhhhhhhhh!!! The Places You'll Go!!!!

I swiped the title for this post from Dr. Seuss. It seems appropriate because I've visited some pretty interesting and fun places -- for me anyway and wanted to share them with y'all.

The Library Thing bills itself as the world's largest book club. A body can post his/her entire library or as much as they wish. Membership is free (with limitations, of course). A life membership is only $25 and I think I'm gonna go for it. A tip of my Thinking Cap to M.E. for having the widget on her blog.

For a hearty laugh go look at OnGame Dating. The real hoot is their prices. I'll do my "happily ever after" single, thank you. I gag when I see the dating service ads on TV but this place takes it to new lows.

I'm wayyyy late in posting this but The National Endowment for the Arts' The Big Read has posted their September 2008-June 2009 reading list. Check your local library to see if they are participating. I've read ten of them and I figure I can read the rest by next September. It's an interesting list.

My dear, dear Fran of Sacred Ordinary mentioned Memiary at her blog the other day. They call it the weightless pocket diary and on their site they ask the question: Don't you wish you could remember five interesting things you did last Tuesday? My answer: "Hell, yeah!" and I signed up immediately. It's easy, quick and fun!

One my favorite sites for just doodling around in mind play is Smith Magazine's Six Word Memoirs. You tell a story in six words. It's really fun and makes an interesting writing prompt. Just reading others' submissions can be a hoot or a heartbreak.

If you liked today's post about the Founding Fathers on Religion, check out this site: Founding Fathers Religion Debate and Poll for further discussion on this topic.

There!!!!!!!! That should keep y'all busy for a while!

Random Sunny Saturday Thoughts

It's sunny in Ohio and a high of 65 degrees is in the forecast! A rather large part of my philosophy is that any day the sun shines is a good day. My pragmatic side as a native Ohioan keeps me from expecting warm temperatures so today is a bonus! I'm taking a break from the household chores that have piled up and are a rather daunting challenge.

* My hip is better. My diagnosis was correct and I am on the mend. The new office chair that I bought a few months ago was attempting to fall apart and throwing my hip out of kilter. Soooo yesterday when I finished work I headed over to Massillon to a big office furniture store and explained my plight to the nice lady who owns it. She said, "I'll bet you went to OfficeMax or some place similar, didn't you" Guilty as charged. She then explained, everything I ever will need to know about choosing an office chair. There was a wonderful wide selection of chairs and I pointed to one I really liked the looks of and was told it cost $1,000. Just goes to show that my eye for quality is alive and well. Champagne taste and a beer budget c'est moi. I finally found one that was wonderfully comfortable, fit my budget, and even matched my decor. Her helper carried it out to my car. I stopped at Pete's for a late lunch on my way home before heading home to entertain my neighbors as I wrestled it up the steps and walk to my front door. I dragged it in the house, cleaned it up a tad and adjusted the height. Ahhhhhhhhhh! No pain!

* Guess what? I finally mustered the courage to drive on the freeway!!! I didn't even get a hint of panic attack. I am proud of myself. It means I can go visit Uncle Joe and Aunt Ingrid up north. It means I can travel a bit. It also means I can get places quicker burning less gas. I am smiling.

* Tonight is a rare night out for the Kay. Our wonderful symphony is playing Brahms. I am excited about it. I get to get dressed up and hear beautiful music -- it doesn't get much better than that!

* I apologize for missing an installment of "How I Got to Be Me" this week. Pain slows me down. Next week it will return. I do appreciate all the support, love, and encouragement y'all have demonstrated. Thank you for making this effort easier for me. A special thanks to Virginia DeBolt of First 50 Words for critiquing it for me. In case y'all didn't know, she's written several books on writing so her opinions are truly excellent. Stop by and visit her site if you need to jump start your muse.

* I'm delighted that The Friday Groaner got a reprieve! I hope y'all will send some more!!!

* Here's a Maxine I hadn't seen before that really gave me a hearty laugh!!!!!!!!

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!!!!!!!! I'm wading through (and attempting clean) the mess I call home and gathering laundry for washing day!!!

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!

It's Monday again and it's time for a good groooooooooaaaaannnnn to start your week! Don't forget to send me your favorite groaner for The Friday Groaner so we can keep it going! My email addy is in the sidebar. Our guest groanmeister this week has another winner to end your work week that I'm sure y'all will enjoy! And here's the goody for this week:

Mr. Combs had a furniture store specializing in ornate antiques in the Baroque style. A dedicated business man, he had walking pneumonia last month but was at the store anyway. He was sitting in one of the Baroque style chairs and rubbing Vicks Vaporub on his aching chest when he serendipitously discovered that the soothing ointment gave the furniture a wonderful, deep, rich shine.

He passed along his discovery other furniture store owners who were not competitors because their furniture was more modern in style. It wasn't long before he received reports that the Vicks treatment not only failed to work on the modern furniture, but actually ruined some of it!

Mr. Combs is very unpopular now and his only consolation is that he learned one important rule:

If it's not Baroque, don't Vicks it.

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!

[Note: Please check out yesterday's post -- I really would like your input and submissions for the new feature.]

Yeah, it's Monday and while it's a holiday, a good groooooooaaannnnn is an excellent way to begin your Labor Day before dashing off to your picnic. Today you get to sing again as we have a musical theme on an exceptionally good, fairly recent addition to the collection! Get ready!!!!!!

Three good friends -- Tina. Marge and Cindy --loved musical theater and saved their money so they could get excellent seats at the premiere of Madonna's film Evita. They were really excited about the event and carefully planned their evening.

At the last minute an unforeseen emergency prevented Cindy from going with them. The other two girls were extremely upset at this and both sniffled and wept and threatened not to go without her. Cindy, however, insisted that they go and consoled them with these words:

"Don't cry for me, Marge and Tina!"

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!

It's Monday again!!!!!!!!!! Are you ready? I almost was going to make y'all sing again but decided you needed a week off from that -- on the other hand, you can sing if you wish! We're going a bit philosophical this week. Enjoy and have a good groooooooaaaaaann! LOL

Mahatma Gandhi was a peculiar person. He walked barefoot everywhere, to the point that his feet became quite thick and hard. He often went on hunger strikes, and even when he wasn't on a hunger strike, he did not eat much and became quite thin and frail. He also was a very spiritual person. Finally, because he didn't eat much and, when he did, his diet was peculiar, he developed very bad breath AND . . . get ready . . .

He became known as a super-calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

It's Blogthings Week!!!!!!

It seems like everywhere I've been going in the Blogosphere, there's a Blogthings quiz so I decided to join the party!

Mary Ann at Five Wells asked, What Art Movement Are You? (Romanticism) My buddy Clarence at Can You Hear Me Now? wants to know Are You a Good Cook? (excellent)
Ronni at Rants by Ronni is curious about What Kind of Wine Are You? (Cabernet Sauvignon)

I decided that I'd go totally mundane and boring and answer the burning question: What Does Your Pizza Say About You?

I'm pretty boring as you can see. Hope y'all let me know how y'all fared!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!!!!!

What Your Pizza Reveals

Your appetite is pretty average. You don't go overboard - but you don't deprive yourself either.

You aren't particularly picky about pizza. It's so good... how could you be? You fit in best in the Western part of the US.

You like food that's traditional and well crafted. You aren't impressed with "gourmet" foods.

You are generous, outgoing, and considerate with your choices.

You are cultured and intellectual. You should consider traveling to Vienna.

The stereotype that best fits you is geek. You're the type most likely to order pizza to avoid leaving your computer.

It's the Groaner of the Week!!!

Yeah, it's Monday again! I've been busy all weekend with assorted distractions like work and haven't been good at visiting y'all like the good little blogger I wish I were. I selected one of my all time favorites from the archives for your grooooooooooaaaaaaaaannnnning pleasure! LOL Enjoy!

There's a small German town near Munich called Pfilzerplatz, and the town is renowned for producing fine stationery. Anyway, Munich had a problem -- the thousands of stray dogs in the city were breeding with one another and overrunning the city. So the people of Munich banded together and ran the dogs out of the city.

Unfortunately, the dogs appeared in Pfilzerplatz. The dogs took over everything, and the mayor decided to evacuate the town. The paper mills were shut down, and everyone left.

But a couple days later, the townsfolk, watching their town from the hills, saw smoke rising from the smokestacks. They knew no humans were left in the town, so they concluded that the dogs had learned to operate the factories.

The mayor hurried to Munich's town hall and pleaded, "You've got to help us!

(now sing the punchline)

"The mills are alive with the hounds of Munich!"

The World Finally Caught Up With Me

This not feeling well, doctor visits, not sleeping and assorted other nonsense caught up with me and I decided to ignore it all and do the things I've been neglecting. I got a bit of a start today and made another "gotta do list" for tomorrow. Translated that means I'm not going to be around too much the next day or so. Life has a way of intruding, dontcha know?

However, I am gonna give y'all a laugh for today. This one I like a lot! Wonder if it works for old guys, too.

An older lady gets pulled over for speeding . . .

Older Woman: "Is there a problem, Officer?"
Officer: "Ma'am, you were speeding."
Older Woman: "Oh, I see. "
Officer: "Can I see your license please?"
Older Woman: "I'd give it to you but I don't have one."
Officer: "You don't have one?"
Older Woman: "Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving."
Officer: "I see. Can I see your vehicle registration papers please."
Older Woman: "I can't do that."
Officer: "Why not?"
Older Woman: "I stole this car."
Officer: "You stole it?
Older Woman: "Yes, & I killed & hacked up the owner."
Officer: "You what?"
Older Woman: "His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see."

The Officer looks at the woman incredulously and sloooowly backs away to his car and calls in for back up. Within minutes, five police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half-drawn gun.

Officer 2:" Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please?"

The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Older woman: "Is there a problem sir?"
Officer 2: " One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner."
Older Woman: "I murdered the owner?"
Officer 2: "Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please?"

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: "Is this your car, ma'am?"
Older Woman: "Yes, sir, here are the registration papers."

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: "One of my officers claims that you do not have a driver's license. "

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse & hands it to the officer. The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: "Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car and that you murdered and hacked up the owner."
Older Woman: "Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too."

MORAL: Don't Mess With Little Old Ladies!
