Sharing Some Stuff that Landed in My Email

I've been feeling pretty lousy but I do want to keep up here. Today is Dr. Maria day and hopefully, it will go well. We'll see. I'm still in pain and there a couple other things I hope we can talk about.

I'm having some health issues this week and am glad that I already have an appointment with Dr. Maria. I have a list and hope she has answers and solutions.

Life intrudes on Blogging -- but Y'all Knew That!

In case anyone noticed, I took a day or so off from here and everything else. It wasn't because I wanted the time away from y'all. However my right eye became contrary and decided that it hated brightness of any kind so I couldn't sit here or anywhere else where there was bright light. It was no fun at all -- imagine being stabbed in the eye with an ice pick and that's how I felt. No fun at all!

I saw the doc and guess what the solution was? More drops!!! Hopefully, it will work well and my travel plans will not be disrupted. The good news is that my nerdy new reading glasses were ready so I picked them up after I finished with the doc. Bryce says I look like a librarian or a nerd. Oh well -- I AM a nerd so that's okay by me. I hope that last statement didn't burst anyone's bubble. (giggle)

In the midst of it all, Jeff appeared and disrupted an already annoying couple days. I sent him packing. It felt good. He was not amused.

That said, I'm going try to get around as much as I can tolerate until the drops do their magic and I'm back to what passes for normal in Kay's World.

George Washington (1732-99)

I don't hold much enthusiasm for President's Day. I think that Abraham Lincoln and George Washington each deserve their own day but obviously, it comes down to money -- as do most things in our country today.

Today is George Washington's birthday. "The Father of Our Country" had some excellent advice that has stood the test of time. I think they are worthy of consideration in these troubled times. (Too bad that the people who need them won't see them.) Here are some of his words that I've collected:

Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865

Today marks the 202nd anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States. He was a Republican and frankly, I think he's weeping in Heaven at what his party has become. I also think that he is proud of Barack Obama.

It is said by many credible former residents that his ghost  visits the White House and I wonder if he's stopped by to visit Obama. Of course, we won't know that until Obama writes his memoirs because if he said he did, the Reckless Right would go crazy (crazier?). So I went to my database of quotes this morning and found a few quotes that are pertinent for our times to honor his memory. I hope y'all enjoy them.

Tuesday Ramblings

The sturm und drang of politics that has been driving me nuts can only be superseded by bureaucratic paperwork (one of my favorite things -- not!) and I just spent this morning dealing with that. What part of I'm old, I'm poor and nothing changes in Kay's world don't these people understand?
I'm waiting for a call back as I type here. Another call came in and I've some other things to consider which in turn gave me a mental hot foot that I need to make up my mind and do some exploration of some things that I've been considering but that has to be on hold until the weather breaks.

I've been waiting for Sarah Palin to self-destruct and I think it's finally happening. Her behavior in the aftermath of the Tuscon tragedy is an embarrassment even to the Tea Party. The word from my favorite Alaskan blogger is that the denouement will be coming in a month or so and that it's a mind bender. Trust me in that when I know, y'all will know.

A quote from Julius Caesar that I memorized as a high school sophomore (Remember when kids had to memorize stuff?) sprung to mind yesterday as I was reading my blogs the past week and seeing so many people asking 'why?': "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,

I went out on Sunday and spent money. The good news is that I had it. I avoid the Evil Empire (Wal-Mart) like the plague but there are a few things that I can't get other places so I had to go there. I also went to the fancy grocery store out near the mall district for a change -- it's my regular locally owned grocer but it's near an affluent suburb and carries things that my close store doesn't and I picked up some things I like and can't usually get. I also finally went to the crafts/art supply store. Parapluie is a wonderful artist and has been encouraging me to try to do some drawing and/or painting so I finally went and got some materials. Who knows? I might do something that I like well enough to share but not until I finish getting caught up on some housework.

Y'all know I'm a movie buff and an avid Netflix aficionado. Y'all also know that I only write about films that I really like and deem worthy -- otherwise Netflix would have to put me on payroll. I'm not big on war movies but the other night I watched "Glory" starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman. It's based on the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry which was one of the first units composed of African Americans in the Civil War. It was a beautiful film and a beautiful story that touched me because so little attention to the role of African American participation in that war. Here's the trailer:

I leave notes to myself about things that I want to write about in the 'drafts' section of my blog sometimes it's a paragraph -- sometimes it just a few words and a date. I go to that section when I am blocked and need to jump start my poor damaged brain. Today is such a day.

I collect quotes as I written here before. In fact, I have a whole database of them on a wide spectrum of topics. With the opening of the new session of Congress, here are some that might help President Obama and Our Congress Critters.

Still Buried

I have been busy trying to get as much done as possible before Tuesday when I start my temporary assignment with the Census Bureau. This week I won't be around much because I'll be working 8-hour days. The ensuing weeks will be part-time so that will be easier and better for me.

* This quote rattling around in my poor demented, damaged brain for ages and has been very much with me since Friday night and a point of contention:

I'm not certain who said it but I think it's very good advice that I have failed to heed more times than I care to think about. Silly me.

One thing I understand is that the business world is important and I am more than willing to work with that so when Jeff called and said he was going to go play golf with his partner, his partner's son and a important potential client, I just said, "Have fun!" and reminded him that we had Lynda's fund raiser at 6:30. He said he would be here on time to go to supper first and added that landing this account could mean that he could completely retire which he has really wanted for a while. Good stuff!!!

A few hours later he called (probably from the 19th hole) and said that the gentleman (who obviously had no wife/S.O.) was insisting that they have dinner and talk more so he would meet me at the gallery. I was a bit disappointed but did my best not to say a word and said I'd go ahead and he could catch up with me later at the gallery.

* The fund raiser was a triumph!!!! The cakes were beautiful and yummy, the wine excellent, the art fabulous!!!!! And the band was absolutely great -- lots of the really great rock classics that everyone enjoyed. Saw lots of old friends and acquaintances and met some really lovely new ones. Danced my lil' heart out! By 9 o'clock, however, I was starting to get a tad annoyed. No Jeff. The cake auctions began and I wound up buying one -- partially because I was getting annoyed. (I'll show you a photo as soon as Lynda's husband emails it to me. I forgot my camera.) He finally arrived about 10 full of apologies, a hug for me and handed Lynda a nice check. I was angry and I still am and I think I'm going to stay that way for a while. I am tired of people in my life who don't consider me a priority despite my best efforts on their behalf.

* In the course of the evening I had had a couple conversations with alleged friends who asked why I hadn't called. Why? Because when I do, they don't return them and I said as much so I stopped calling. I make time for people who are important to me. That's what friends and family are supposed to do.

Jeff keeps calling and apologizing and wants to talk. I don't. I am cranky and tired; I said my piece and now I just want some space so I can concentrate on what I need to do for me. Am I wrong? Maybe. It won't be the first time and it certainly won't be the last. I'll get through it but I'll be damned if I'm going to be anybody's doormat.

This is my song for today as I try to get things done. I think "don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy" is damned good advice. I tend to do that too much.

Another Take on the Tiger

When I was in my 20s, my friends and I were fans of the morning show on WGAR, a Cleveland radio station. The wacky host who kept us laughing as we drove to work was Don Imus who went on to fame and fortune as WNBC's morning drive time host. He weighed in yesterday on Brit Hume's pathetic remarks directed to Tiger Woods. The only thing he said that I disagree with is that Brit Hume is a brilliant journalist. My take is that a truly brilliant journalist wouldn't would make the sort of remarks Hume made. Here's the video:



All I wanna know is what happened to "fair and impartial" journalism? Do they still teach it in college? Can any of y'all imagine Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley or Chet Huntley making statements like that? I long for the days when the news media pretty much left a man's (or woman's) faith alone. I'm glad Imus called Hume out on this even though he's sold his soul to Fox News.

And if any of you feel a burning need to call me out and tell me that Christianity is the only path to God, remember that I am a renegade Catholic and believe that we all find our own path to God whether we call him God, Yahweh, Buddha, Allah or the Great Wazoo. Also remember that one of my favorite quotes is:

As I've often said here and there, I've been an inveterate and voracious reader since I learned to read when I was five or six. If it has printed words, I'll read it -- from labels on household products to encyclopedias. It's been that way for decades.

I do have my favorites but I rarely meet a book I don't like although there are some that I avoid because they bore me. My vast reading of hundreds of books over the years have more than probably anything else, made me the person I am today. Random Saturday Thoughts and a Favorite Video

Well, the Christmas tree downtown is lit courtesy of Hizzoner da mayor who wanders around with a couple guys clearing the way crowds for him. I miss our former mayor who needed no such thing -- she just turned up at the damnedest places and acted like "just folks" and even remembered everyone's name but I digress . . . At any rate, downtown is all dolled up for the holidays and all the shops were open for our monthly First Friday celebration. The ice skating rink was open, too -- 20 degree temperatures guaranteed that! I had fun despite freezing my asker off and will pay for it later, I'm sure.

* I finally got my sidebar back where it belongs after a LOT of finagling and lessons learned. You'll notice that a few widgets and awards are missing and they will return slowly but surely. There is still a lot of housekeeping to be done here.

* I haven't put up the Blogger "following" widget yet because only having 9 followers is kinda embarrassing and makes me insecure. I was just at a blog that has 155 followers. What am I doing wrong? Actually, it doesn't matter because I love all y'all unconditionally.

* Speaking of the "following" feature, it annoys me greatly when I try to add a Blogger blog and they say I can't add it. Duh?

* BearNaked has a sinful but delicious treat at her place. If I'm gonna get fat, I'm taking y'all along for the ride!!!!

* I'm working on putting together more of the Founding Fathers thoughts on various amendments in the Bill of Rights. Each will appear as I finish it.

* Tonight is symphony night and we have a guest soloist -- a pianist from Moscow who is coming to us with rave reviews! Needless to say, I'm excited!!
