Notes for Friday

I was going to rant my little liberal heart out on John Boehner today but decided to let that wait until a bit more info surfaces.  (Are we running a nursery school or a government?  If it's the former, I think the wages of Congress should be reduced to minimum wage like most day care workers are paid.)  

* My good friend The Gabby Geezer and his lovely wife are celebrating fifty years of wedded bliss today. Do drop by and wish them many more!

* Also, stop by and visit my soul sister, Judy at Imagine and see what Irene the Terrible did to her lovely home in North Carolina!!!! "Yikes!" doesn't cover it!

* The folks at gawker.com zapped Bill O'Reilly. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy (and I hope y'all know that my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek as I typed this). I don't think I need to tell you what I think about O'Reilly's behavior.

* Howie over at DownWithTyranny thinks that Eric Cantor will be in trouble in his heavily GOP district come election time. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy!

Thursday, Thursday Ramblings

The battle with the plumbing is continuing. Dan (my landlord) will be camped here most of the day -- again. I hope it finally gets fixed. It's frustrating and horrendously inconvenient which means I'll get nothing done!!! Sigh. At least, I have an excuse -- for a change. (Eyes rolling)

Last night around 11 o'clock  Michelle called and told me to close my doors and windows!  It seems that a guy who was out taking a walk was held up at gunpoint by two armed pedestrians near us.  Scary.  Her brother Jeff was out on their porch with a taser  -- I guess he was watching for them. I wouldn't mess with him.   It's weird.  I've always felt safe here but today I feel less so and hope this isn't the beginning of a trend. Word this morning is that the cops were patrolling all night.  The guys on our beat right now are pretty good. I (almost) feel sorry for anyone who decides to hold me up. I rarely carry cash. Yeah, I'm a slave to my debit card.

I think that the earthquake in Virginia took us all off guard. We actually had a little one in my part of Ohio in 1997.  It was disconcerting because we aren't famous for that. I suppose Virginians are equally perplexed.

I hope all y'all on the Eastern Seaboard are battening down the hatches for Irene the terrible and I hope she decides to take a turn and head out to sea.

I haven't seen any reports of Armageddon from Europe so I'm guessing that we dodged the Rapture bullet unless, of course it's gonna begin on Eastern Daylight Time. It was supposed to have hit in time zones around the world in succession at 6 p.m. which means that I still have to clean my front porch. Oh well. I'm actually looking forward to it because it signifies that my favorite season is imminent.
Sunshine energizes me and today we actually have plenty of it so I'm going to make this short and get busy making it a worthwhile and productive day.

Wednesday Random Thoughts

We are back in blizzard mode in Ohio -- 18 inches are expected. Yesterday morning -- yet another snow day for our schools -- Bryce knocked on my door with 'my' dog in tow who he said wanted to see me, and then set about shoveling my sidewalks. D.O.G. happily napped at my feet after having his cookies. Smile. The Buckeye State is digging out! We got about six inches of snow and most of the Buckeye State got buried and there's more coming later in the week. These old bones were not amused after digging Miss Ruby out in the before the next onslaught. Joey was over later to get the next batch. Old folks who don't like teens obviously don't know the kids in my 'hood.

* Down in Columbus thousands protested in the rain Tuesday against Senate Bill 5 which, if passed, abolishes collective bargaining for unions at the Statehouse here in Ohio and former Governor Ted Strickland joined them again -- whatta guy. I think/hope that John Kasich will be a one term governor and there are rumbling of a recall. All I wanna know is where do I sign on to help? When my ex worked in the office (non-union, of course) of one of the big steel companies here, if the United Steel Workers negotiated a raise in pay or benefits, he got raises. Maybe others didn't notice that but I did. It was 'trickle down' economics at it's finest.

* Michelle Obama doesn't not deserve the cra . . . er . . . criticism that the Poster Child for Gross Obesity, Rush Limbaugh, has been heaping upon her. He says that she is is fat, She is 6'0" tall and weighs about 141 pounds. The camera adds 10 lbs. and, depending on one's ensemble, that can make one look heavier, too, as any woman can tell you. I think she looks pretty damned good. She's pretty buff because she works out regularly. Rush, whose only functioning muscles are around his mouth and nose (which will probably collapse), has no right to cast stones. She took her daughters skiing and they feasted on ribs. Big freaking deal. Anyone who skis will tell you it's good exercise. Before I was married, I liked to ski and can tell you that a day on the slopes works up a good appetite and a plate of ribs would be a great meal. And I'm betting they were baby beef ribs rather than pork spare ribs which are a lot less calories than the latter (and taste better, too!). Shut up, Rush! Only he who hath no sins can cast the first stone.

* I truly resent to the Republican's cavalier attitude about shutting down government on March 4th and am really scared because my only source of income are my Social Security checks as it is for many of us elders and I'm scared. AND it will shut down Medicare which might postpone my surgery next month depending on how long it lasts. Sigh. Do y'all think it will wake up the old Teabaggers to how their party really feels about them?
You can read about what happened the last time this stunt was pulled here. I was all set to write my Tea Party Congressman and then his newsletter appeared in my mailbox -- he actually thought it had been a good week in the House -- and I gave that idea up as a bad job. I can't fight that level of stupidity.

Ground Hog's Day

Neither Punxatawny Phil nor Buckeye Chuck saw his shadow yesterday and that preages an early Spring. That's good news for all of us who are buried in ice and snow. I hope they are right.

Yikes!!!!!! Ice Is No Fun!

It's all an adventure in Kay's World. Last night, as I was trying to get caught up on y'all, the power failed: no lights, no heat, no phone, no internet, no cell phone. Needless to say, I was upset -- not to mention cold. After I got done being upset, I bundled myself up properly and put myself to bed under every blanket, quit, throw I own. Fortunately, I was warm enough to get some sleep and had plenty of it.

When I woke up, I the electricity was working and my cell phone is finally charging. Amen and Hallelujah! There's an inch of ice on my sidewalk. I have to find my non-cordless phone and put it somewhere that's easily accessible. The way it was last night was if I had needed help, I couldn't get it. As it was, my cordless phone wouldn't work.

Snow Is a Four Letter Word

It's snowing in Ohio! Then again, it's January and that's normal. Cleveland usually gets it a lot worse than we do. "Lake effect" is the operative term the weather folks use a lot. My walks are not shovelled yet but I suspect they will be when the boys get home from school. The city has done a wonderful job of clearing the streets -- as always since our present Service Director was hired. I know him personally. He's a great guy and he runs things better than anyone ever has in the decades that I've lived here. Other areas are not so fortunate:

Saturday Afternoon Sunshine

It's Saturday afternoon and it's been sunny and bright, albeit cold, allllllll day!!!!! It's the kind of day that energizes my soul and improves my morale. I think that getting out of the house last night helped a lot, too!!! At times like this I ask myself why I live here and then the light bulb goes off in my brain and reminds me: "Because you're too damned broke to move/live anywhere else, idiot girl!" Oh well.

I almost didn't go downtown for the First Friday celebration but I shoved myself into some decent clothes and headed downtown. The parking gods were with me and I snagged a meter (free after 5 pm) across the street from Lynda's gallery. I popped over to the Palace Theater for some awesome Irish music and then popped by Lynda's where I ran into several friends and hung out there for a while. I sorta wanted to go home and said, "I can't decide if I want to go home or head to the Arcadia to see Maria and have a beer." Lynda said, "I've got the perfect reason to go see Maria." and she fetched a poster and flyers for her annual fund raiser and said, "Go!!!" So I wandered down the alley waving at the street musicians and stopped to talk Denny (one of the best jazz tenor sax players I've heard) for a minute.

When I got to the Arcadia it was in full swing and I asked a waitress where the boss was and she directed me to the back. I was in shock when I saw Maria. Her head was shaved. And before I could stop myself "Oh my God!" popped out. She said, "It's gonna be okay!" which could only mean that her cancer is back but that's another story about a tough, courageous woman. I gave her the material Lynda sent and she was delighted and told me to sit down and told a waitress to bring me a beer on the house. We talked a bit and enjoyed the musician who sang oldies before, as always, her staff got so busy that she pitched in to help and I decided to head back up to Lynda's and give her Maria's message that yes, she would attend and spread the word. I just hung around a little bit there and decided to head home because I was tired.

Today I woke up with energy and made a list. I'm working to get myself on a proper sleep schedule. I headed to the library a grabbed a bunch of movies -- they let you get ten at a time -- and then stopped at the deep discount drug store to check out the closeout aisle and picked up a few bargains. This is what $22 bought: 2 big fluffy bath towels, 2 matching wash cloths, a bath mat, a car charger and an earphone for my cell, paper plates, furniture polish, 2 pairs of embroidery scissors and an umbrella. Good stuff, huh? That store has been a godsend to me on my tight budget! The hard part is that when one sees something, one had best buy it because it probably won't be there when you come back.

Tonight will be movie night which means I'll be needlepointing a lot. Good stuff!!!! Tomorrow is supposed to be nice again and I'm going to grab my quarterstaff and go to the park to walk a bit.

Not Much to Say . . .

I didn't accomplish much today except going through some old boxes looking for some needlepoint alphabets -- I felt like my get-up-and-go got up and went. I didn't find what I was looking for but found a bunch of stuff I wrote a long time ago -- including a journal I kept while I went through my divorce and some other writings. Of course I had to read every syllable which shot my plans all to hell. I
am disappointed in myself. I did cook today -- yes, miracles occur! I made a big pot of spaghetti sauce and meatballs. Yum!!!

We got snow today but it was only about an inch or so -- after what we had the past two weeks, 'tweren't nothin'!!!! We have had over 30 inches of snow this month and set a new record.

Didn't get much done online except moderating comments -- thanks, y'all -- and reading email. I'm trying to figure out how to navigate Blogher -- they changed it and I'm not used to it yet.

I get email from my Congressman regularly. He keeps us up-to-date on how he voted and why he said 'yea' or 'nay'. For just having become a congressman a little over a year ago, he's been pretty active. In today's email he included a video of him speaking on the House floor. I liked it -- especially his last line -- and hope y'all do, too.

White Stuff

Snow is a four letter word in Ohio. As I type, the plows are finally getting to our street. Our city service director has had his crews on overtime trying to keep up with it and I applaud their efforts. I may have to leave the house and figure there's a good two hours of work just getting Miss Ruby cleared off and de-iced before I can think about it. I'm trying to avoid that but I fear that, sooner or later, I will have to. I am glad that I cancelled my endoscopy because I wouldn't have asked my worst enemy to take me in this weather. I decided that I will reschedule when the weather breaks. It's one thing to ask a friend for assistance; it's another to to ask them to put themselves at risk.

The record amount of snow for our part of Ohio in February is 25.8 inches set two years ago. So far we have had about 2-4 more inches of it and the forecast says that a couple more inches are coming so that record will fall before the week ends. Grrrrrrr is my most polite reaction and I wonder about global warming.

Jeff and Shaughnessy are safely in Florida. In a way, I wish I could have gone -- I really like Sanibel Island a lot. However, being away six weeks is not practical or affordable for me at this point AND it would have raised some issues that I'd rather not deal with at this point. Granny Annie raised the question "Why not Jeff?" recently and I will address that eventually.

At any rate, I'm getting caught up on some things around here that have been neglected as well as finally getting around to visiting y'all. I do appreciate your comments and loyalty. I follow approximately 75 blogs so that can be daunting at times. I hope I can get to the grocery eventually. I'm running low on things.

Random Snowy Tuesday Thoughts

Lots has been happening and my alleged brain has been reeling. I'm hoping that things settle a bit in the next couple weeks but then again fresh hell is always just around the corner in Kay's World.

* My least favorite sentence: "The National Weather Service has declared a snow emergency until noon on Tuesday." (Like we needed 6-8 more inches of the white stuff.)

* Jeff and Shaughnessy left for Florida this morning at about 9:30 after guilting me for not going with them. The good news is they left about six hours ahead of the snow storm and they are in Charlotte, NC for the night as he called about an hour ago and said they made great time and will be in Florida tomorrow night. I'm glad I wasn't with them -- he probably drove like a maniac.

* I was at the lab at the medical foundation this morning to feed the A- vampire so Dr. Maria can check my B-12 levels and then went to look at an very nice apartment complex I've been hearing about that might be my next home. They are full and have a waiting list but that's okay with me. I wouldn't be interested in moving until the weather breaks anyway. This winter tells that being some place more convenient might be a good thing so I'm thinking about it.

* Today I'm tied to the phone dealing with bureaucrats -- it's renewal time for a lot of things. Sigh.

* Never re-read old love letters/emails; they are not good for your mental state.

* The first rule (law) of an impending snow in Ohio is to report to the nearest grocery store and join your friends and neighbors to kvetch about the weather and stock up on staples. I didn't bother to go last week and I didn't go today. Sigh. Big mistake. The good news is I have canned goods and coffee so I will manage but some eggs, salad, and fruit would have been nice.

Snowbound and Digging Out

I'm in Cranky Old Broad mode today. I've been working very hard not to go into that mode for quite a while but today I was more or less goaded into it.

* The main roads are clear but side streets like Jeff and I live on are still an outrageous mess. Sigh.

* We didn't go to the symphony last night because we decided that we didn't feel like braving the cold in dress up clothes which are never warm enough. Instead, we went to the Syrian restaurant in jeans, boots, and sweayers for steaks, pilaf, Greek salads and adult beverages and hung out with friends. It was just what I needed.

* Today Jeff dropped me at home after noon Mass and headed to the groc shop. Poor Miss Ruby was buried with only small hints of red visible and none of the usual suspects had come to her assistance. They did clear a tiny path to my door that was adequate but not great. After dumping my stuff, I grabbed my trusty snow shovel and headed out to rescue Ruby. I had barely got started when Joey came similarly armed to help. Needless to say, I was grateful (and rather annoyed with Jeff) and headed out to refill a couple scrips and replenish the caffeine supply.

Now in the more than forty years of our friendship, I don't think I've ever been upset with Jeff more than a dozen times but I was livid today and when he called later to tell me to come back over to his place to watch the Super Bowl, I politely told him to go to hell and why he should go there. After all, I helped him with the snow at his house and with my disabilities, I needed help a lot worse than he did. He's called a half dozen times since and had the pizza shop deliver me my fave. I called and said thanks but I wasn't going anywhere until tomorrow. I'm sorta watching the Super Bowl but I really am not interested other than cheering a little for the Saints. I can't cheer for the Colts -- they're still supposed to be in Baltimore. It's not easy being a Browns fan.

* Tomorrow is Dr. K. (hare hare) day and I hope it's a good. I was diagnosed with this thyroid stuff nearly three years ago and it's time for answers.

* It looks like I may have to cancel my test next week. Don't even ask . . . sigh.

* More snow is heading our way. Sigh.

Yikes!!!!!

Snow is a four-letter word and it's very much with us here in Ohio. It started at around three yesterday afternoon and hasn't stopped and we have a foot of snow so far. I guess the main drags are clear but no one is moving unless there's an emergency.

The party the Jeffster and I were supposed to attend last was cancelled because of the weather. I was disappointed for him but such is life in the Buckeye State. He told me to pack a bag and he and Shaughn would be over to get me and we would weather the storm together. I put Miss Ruby in the driveway out back so she wouldn't get towed. I packed some clothes, grabbed some fresh pasta, sauce and meatballs I'd frozen from the fridge, and a bottle of wine and some DVDs and my Scrabble game for entertainment AND my lil' laptop so I could keep up with y'all !!!

So I'm at his house ensconced in the guest room with Shaughn as my roomie. Actually, we're having fun except we're glued to the radio to see if the Symphony's performance is cancelled -- just about everything else is so far. We took Shaughn out for his walk and he had fun with some of the kids in Jeff's as well as trying to catch the snowballs Jeff and I were lobbing at each other. It's too deep to make snow angels. Sigh.

Just about everything is cancelled so far. And there is snow in the forecast for the next week. Jeff is a tad worried because he was planning to head back to Florida with Shaughn at the end of the week but it doesn't look very good. I hope Brice or Joey shovels me out. I may not see Miss Ruby again until spring thaw. I shouldn't really complain because we haven't had a huge snow storm until now. Then again, complaining about the weather is a Ohio tradition.

Not Quite What I Was Planning

This weekend has been a lot different than I thought. I really thought I was going to have time to do some blog housekeeping and wander around the blogosphere to see y'all but instead, because the snow stopped, I've been off and running to get things done that I postponed because of that white stuff. My DVD broke and I had to go find a replacement. (Please pause while I, the technology-impaired, pat myself on the back for installing it properly the first time.) While I was at it, I also picked up some other things I needed.

I also need prescriptions refilled and groceries because I have to start fasting tomorrow for my test on Tuesday. I don't eat much usually but tell me I can't eat and suddenly I'm starving to death. And I'm not allowed to drive after my test so I'll need something in the cupboard. God bless Diane for getting up early and taking me to the test. I'm getting really tired of tests but blessedly, I'm almost done for a while -- there's only two more (I think/hope). So far nothing new has been discovered -- hallelujah!!! Then again, I wish they would figure out why I feel so lousy.

Holy Toledo!!!!! It's Snowing!!!!!

It started snowing during the night on Sunday and it continued through the night and throughout the day. I awakened this morning and threw on my robe to go see what the noise was outside. It was Brice shovelling my front steps and sidewalk. I actually ventured forth to try to do errands but gave it up as a bad job. Too slippery for these legs and poor Miss Ruby doesn't like such conditions and there were fender benders all over town -- typical for the first real snowfall. This evening I heard a snow shovel scraping again and when I went and looked and it was David, aka Lil' Red and the son of my neighbors Red and Carol, shovelling. When I expressed my thanks he said, "I had to do our walks so I figured that I'd do yours while I was at it."

I am so blessed to have these nice teenagers around me. And some people wonder why I like my neighborhood so much! And the snow is pretty if one need not go anywhere.

It's supposed to continue for another day or two so I called and rescheduled my stress test for tomorrow. I'll be doing that on Thursday morning instead. Hopefully, by then most folks will have recovered their winter driving skills and the snow will have abated. Besides, me driving in rush hour on snow after the obligatory fast is a sure fire way to have me in a full blown panic attack!!!!!

Random Saturday Thoughts

This post is late because I was exhausted after a weird week and tucked myself in early (for me). The snow has appeared to have abated. We almost broke the record for the month of January in our county. As it was, we had FORTY inches of snow! Yuck!!!

* My boss is concerned about my leaving. I'm sure he will have some words with the director but I doubt it will help. He knows that she can't replace me because no one else has Spanish which is essential to our work. I have already decided that I will give him some volunteer time each week. I like actually using my degree and I think what is done there is important.

* I think I'm going to have to go to war over a couple things. I'm not happy about it. I am going to try to have a sitdown with my new Congress Critter soon. I have questions and would like some help.

* Our mayor is under attack. Don't ask me why I'm not surprised -- he's always nice to me -- but there's something there that makes me question his sincerity and integrity. There are at least two investigations involving him -- so far. Anonymous letters about him have gone to various officials. If they are true, I want him out of office. He also fired the Service Director without giving a reason. The gentleman he fired is well-known for being an honorable, well-respected, and honest man who was good at his job. He isn't talking to anyone. I'm guessing that he's getting his ducks in a row before he says anything and when he does, I suspect this mess will become a full-blown scandal. What really galled me is that the Mayor sent a memo to city employees telling them not to have any contact with him. I don't think he can do that.

* Peggy of Musings of Meggie has honored me with the Premio Dardos award. I am truly grateful and will get it on here (I really need to get caught up on my housekeeping here) soon and pass it on to the worthy. Thank you, Peggy!!!!

* I think I'm done with doctors and tests for a few weeks except for physical therapy twice a week. I'll be interested to see what the results are. The bone scan was a no-brainer. I just hope I passed but I doubt it. I'm the poster child for osteoporosis. I go down the list of criteria saying, "That's me." Sigh.

* Despite the ton of work I need to do, I'm giving myself the weekend off and going to the movies. I need a break from responsibility and to be lost in Fantasyland. I call it my personal film festival. There are about five I want to see and I'll give reviews next week.

Update from the Deep Freeze

The city is closed down more or less. The office is closed and I am off today and a very Cranky Old Broad. Poor Miss Ruby is parked out back and looks like a snow sculpture. I'd take a picture but the freezing rain this morning that added insult to injury has turned our city into an ice skating rink and as much as I love y'all and enjoy entertaining you, I'm not going out there. It's ugly. It's currently snowing hard again and will probably continue throughout the afternoon.

My favorite columnist from our local paper, Charita Goshay, had quite a bit to say about our 'lovely' weather this morning with her tongue planted firmly in her cheek. Here's an excerpt but y'all can read the rest here. I guarantee you a smile and maybe even a giggle or two.

Then again, do we really want dealings with any alien dumb enough to visit Ohio in the dead of January — especially this January? Didn’t he look down?

FREEZING OVER

So, just how cold has it been?

The rowdy squirrels in my yard, are wearing rabbit.

I hope the kids are in shoveling mode later today. The plows are working overtime and, of course, getting Miss Ruby shoveled out will be a challenge with the mounds of the white you-know-what piled at the end of the drive. Sigh.

That said, I'm going back to bed. I feel like hell.

A Newsworthy Day in My Town

It's been quite a newsy day here. As I type, the big news is our weather and we could get up to ten inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon. Yuck!! They're already announcing school closings for tomorrow and our weather dude announced that we haven't beem without snow on the ground since January 7th. I'm hoping my boss will call and tell me to stay home in the morning for two reasons: a) I hate winter driving; b) I feel lousy. I'm wondering if it has to do with my tests but I sorta doubt it. Stress is probably more likely.

I'll be back as soon as I can -- right now all I want to do is collapse in my bed.
