My cold is still very much with me but I'll be on the phone to Dr. Maria in the morning. I hate to bother her on her days of and, since my surgery isn't until the 28th, I'm not gonna bother her.
* I took stuff over to the ex yesterday and he asked me to stay to dinner. He likes to cook and knows how awful I am about cooking these days.
* I'm really proud of my son the coach. His teams did well at the NAIA national swim meet with his girls finishing 6th and the guys finishing 8th. Since University of the Cumberlands is one of that smallest schools in the conference, that was pretty good but he is used to "small but mighty". When he was in college, his college was the smallest in NCAA Division II and he and three other guys finished 4th at Nationals. I've no doubt that next year his kids will do even better. That recruiting is one one of his strong points helps a lot. Now that the season is over, he'll have time more time for Jen and the boys and I'm sure they are delighted. Who knows? They might even have time for a trip to Ohio or Illinois! Then again, recruiting for next season is always important and time-consuming.
* Bill Moyers had an excellent interview with David Stockman, architect of the Reagan Revolution, on "Crony Capitalism". It really an eye-opener and exposes what needs to be done with the casino created by the banksters. It's rather long but well worth your time. Here's a two minute clip that says a lot:
* I'm making some really cute little needlepoint Easter Baskets for Gracie and Ana Michelle. I'm one of those people who simply cannot just sit and watch television without having busy hands. If I remember, I'll take photos for y'all.
* One of my next projects will be some much-needed blog housekeeping. And no, I'm not 'upgrading' to Blogger's new interface. I tried it and that lasted about five minutes. I really hate it so I'm sticking with what I have as long as I can but will be considering/exploring other options if I'm forced to do so.
* I'm in music mode today and hauled out the oldies. This 1968 goodie brings back memories of my misspent youth, slow dancin' and a really great summer! Sigh. Enjoy!

Post-Holiday Thoughts -- Crabby and Otherwise
I'm behind on blogging. I just haven't had the energy to do that. I do try to keep up with y'all and comment but I'm in my usual post-holiday crabbiness so please forgive me.
* Christmas was less than stellar -- I'm just not comfortable with others' family. If it had been Michelle, her mom, and the kids, it would have been okay. I'm more and more of the mind that I just going to spend Christmas by myself. My son actually returned my call but, as usual, I didn't get to talk to the boys. And there wasn't so much as a thank you for the gifts I sent. That annoys me because I sacrifice to send them and I know my son knows that and he was taught better manners than that. I mentioned that his dad and I talk and he didn't like that much to which I say, "Grow up!!!!! In fact, his dad stopped by the day after Christmas to update a program for me and took me to lunch and said, "Like it's really any of his business what we do or don't do." I'm not a hater and refuse to stay mad at anyone forever -- hate eats one's soul.
* Have the Iowa Causes been going on forever? Will they ever end? It's not even 2012 yet and I'm tired of Election 2012? I can only imagine how I'll feel next year at this time. It's gonna be ugly no matter who the GOP nominates to run against Obama. Sigh.
* We still haven't had any appreciable snow here in Ohio. There was a bit yesterday but as near as I can tell, we haven't had an inch. Maybe -- just maybe -- I'm starting to believe in global warming. Ask me in a month when I'm buried under six inches of 'partly cloudy'!!! (Huge grin)
* I'm not going to make any New Year's resolutions -- as usual. At this point, my bad habits are pretty much ingrained and something I learned about myself is that I tend to drop them when I'm ready not because someone else (e.g., a doctor) mandates it. I notice that one may be going by the wayside yesterday but we shall see what happens.
* I think I've mentioned that my dad loved to sing and I swear he knew the lyrics to every single song of the Big Band era. Here's one of his favorites sung by one of my favorites . . . Diana Krall does it so well!!! Enjoy!!!

This and That
I'm slowly but surely getting things ready so I can get out of town next week. I'm one of those people who thinks she has to leave her house neat so the burglars can find everything. Blame my mother :)
* Today I took a couple hours for pampering and got a manicure, pedicure, and a facial aka 'The Remedy' and it really is good for one's soul. I don't do it often but with everything going up except my SS check, it's how it has to be. Even so, I go to the local beauty college and that saves a lot. 'The Remedy' cost me less than my neighbor Michelle paid for just a pedicure at a salon and she says that her next one will be at the beauty school. Think about it, gals if you need a treat and there's a beauty school nearby.
* Quote of the Week: "It's hard to insult the intelligence of the American people but she's (Sarah Palin) managed to do it!" -- Bill Maher.
* Jon Stewart's return was hysterical on Tuesday. Y'all can see the full episode here. I laughed so hard I cried.
* Lawrence O'Donnell weighed in with some good insights and excellent sense on he calls Sarah Palin's barely legal bus tour and The Young Turks covered it, too. What do y'all think? I think something needs to be done about her antics. Word from Alaska is that all the books coming out about her should destroy her but we'll see.
Okay, I'm all vented out for today. It was a lovely summer day (finally!) in Ohio today. Here's one of my all-time favorite singers (backed up by Louis Armstrong) with one of my all-time favorite songs by my favorite American composer!! Enjoy -- it doesn't get better than this!!!!!!

Update after a Longggggg Week
I swear this week was at least a month long and not a fun one at times!!! I'm glad it's the weekend and hope it's a reasonably quiet one so I can get busy here and get around to get caught up on y'all! My 'blog notebook' is loaded with ideas and I feel horribly guilty about being remiss in posting and visiting and appreciate all the sweet, supportive comments y'all have left. Don't tell me not to feel guilty -- my mother made that nigh impossible. It's an old-fashioned Catholic thing and ingrained in my psyche. 'Guilt seems to be one of the things I do best. Sigh.
* My neighbor Michelle called early Tuesday morning to tell me that she and John had gone to the hospital at 4 AM and finally had the baby and asked me to go check on Brice and Racy Gracie! I was soooo glad -- she was so big she couldn't drive last week! Ana Michelle weighed in at nine and a half pounds! Yikes! The very thought hurts! Brice and Gracie were fine and excited and I fixed them breakfast and later I took them and their grandma (who doesn't drive) to the hospital to see their sister. Ana is positively beautiful and looks a lot like John and Gracie was immediately enchanted with her little sister. It was fun for me to be a part of their blessed event and I'm continuing on standby to help for the moment. And my camera got a workout. (And I don't post baby pictures for safety reasons.)
* Microsoft and Hotmail put in updates that messed up my computer (and that of lotsa other angry users)according to their so-called help sites that never seems to provide it (i.e., help) and, despite my best efforts, I finally had to call the ex and ask assistance. He came over and fixed things so I'm running fine now. Hallelujah.
* Jeff and I are in discussion mode and at a stalemate for now. We shall see. He says I'm being silly and maybe I am but it comes down to trust and faith and both are in short supply for the moment. I couldn't help but laugh when one of my best gal pals said that some serious groveling would be appropriate on his part because it's an honesty issue. Roses don't fix everything.
* Needless to say, I didn't get back to Zoar this week. I'm hoping to go in the coming week but my congressman's people have asked my assistance when they discovered that I have experience with campaigning. I suspect I shouldn't have told anyone that. LOL Sigh. I told them that I will do what I can when when I can.
* I thought Jon Stewart was brilliant in this video. I just "love" how the Reckless Right thinks that all Muslims are terrorists.
* I've been in Carole King, James Taylor and Carly Simon mode this week and this 70s oldie has been nagging at me all week! It's a goodie!!! Did we really wear our skirts that short?
Well, I've got to get to the grocery so I can get ready for the next round in the adventure I call life!!!!

Sure and Begorra! It's Saint Patrick's Day!
Saint Patrick's Day and I am missing Jeff. He is my favorite companion on this day and we have celebrated long and well now and again over the years. His sainted mother, The Fair Brigid who was born in Ireland, rolled her eyes at our antics with a twinkle in her eyes and she and Big Alex joined often joined us for a wee jar when they were younger.
That said, I was going to don my green and join my fellow sons and daughters of Hibernia for the Saint Patrick's Day Stroll and corned beef and cabbage and a green beer afterward but with my dental problems, I'll just stay h0me. Sigh.
It isn't St. Patrick's Day without my favorite Irish group: Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers so here's one my favorite songs from them. (Jeff and I were known to sing it loud and off key after a couple wee jars in our misspent youth.) Tommy and Liam -- God be good to them -- are no longer with us but I'm glad YouTube keeps their spirit and gifts alive.

Busy Tuesday Thoughts -- a Quick Update
It's Tuesday and I'm suffering from my messed up sleep patterns. I've been up most of the night despite my best efforts. The good news is that I didn't waste the time and got some good things done and off my list.
* I keep getting letters telling me that I'm paying too much for my car insurance. I think we all think we pay too much for that. The only reason I've been giving them notice is that I've been with my agency for three years and have never had a claim or any traffic violation. Because I am a good girl, it seems to me that my premium should be going up every year. If anything, I think they should be going down. I want your input. Should I be checking into changing companies? If you have suggestions you can email me at the addy in the sidebar.
* I had a nice surprise Sunday afternoon -- Brice knocked on my door and had a Styrofoam container in hand. His mom works part-time for an old friend of mine who owns a restaurant and Phil sent me one of his excellent club sandwiches. I think it was a not so subtle hint that he hasn't seen me in a while and I'd best get up there to touch base and have a meal.
* Sunday night was Symphony night and it was wonderful -- it started with Rachmaninoff and ended with Tchaikovsky and in the middle we had a marvelous mezzo soprano from the Santa Fe Opera Company as guest artist singing Liebersohn. It doesn't get much better than that!!!!! We are blessed to have such an excellent orchestra here!!!!
I think I'd better get some breakfast and then go lie down for a bit. I suspect it's going to be one of those days where I'm going to be a serial napper. Sigh.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!
This video of the Scottish Parliament never ceases to amaze me! That men and women can join hands and sing like this (with gusto!) despite their differences should be a nice lesson to us all. And that's one of the reasons why I'm posting it again. The other is the Scottish blood that flows in my veins.
And last night was also a Blue Moon which my dear friend Rain explained so eloquently on her blog and put me in mind of this oldie but goodie. I really love this rendition by Julie London. I think she was one of the true greats.
May 2010 and beyond bring all of the good things to y'all and all that love you back!

Monday, Monday
Last night was symphony night and since I have season tickets I went despite my inclination to stay home between my dental work and just not plain feeling well. I'm so glad I went because the program was outstanding from start to finish!!!!!
It opened with a fabulous rendition of Aaron Copeland's "Appalachian Spring" with our excellent Assistant Conductor taking the podium. I love to watch him conduct -- his enthusiasm is contagious and I love to see someone enjoying their work. Here's the "Simple Gifts" section of the work that I found on YouTube. It shows why Copeland is one of my favorite composers.
Next Maestro Zimmerman took the podium and our gifted young Concertmaster performed Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Opus 63 and, as always, gave a marvelous with this interesting and challenging piece. I'm not sure exactly why but I always enjoy the Russian composers.
This wonderful evening ended with Maurice Ravel's lovely "Daphnis and Chloe Suites 1 & 2" from the ballet by the same name and it was another triumph for our orchestra. All of us were enthusiastic in our applause.
I was delighted when talking with others after the program that they found the program as thrilling as I did. It was a welcome respite from my real world.
Today I'm on the phone seeking information and off on errands this afternoon.
Tomorrow is doctor day with the endocrinologist so I'm filling out all of the paperwork -- yuck!!!!!

This and That
Today I felt almost human. I'm still on an erratic sleep schedule but I actually made myself a semi-decent meal -- some bean and cheese burritos smothered in salsa and and queso mexicano (it's sorta mexican provolone). Yum.
I left the house today for a change and took a bunch of laundry to the laundromat and came home for the above-mentioned supper. After supper I trundled the trash and recycling bin to the curb so the city workers can pick it up in the morning.
Checked mail -- on which I'm still catching up -- and Facebook and visited a lot of y'all at your blogs. I giggled especially at GFB's blog. He headlined it "She's Back!" and wrote a nice paragraph about missing me. Mrs. GFB is a very lucky woman as I constantly remind him. He is a good friend here as are all y'all. Words can't express how much I appreciate each and everyone of you!!!!!
I also spent some time thinking about some new ideas for here and resurrecting some old ones. The burning question -- and yes! I want answers -- lots of 'em! -- is: Do y'all want the groaners back?
Today was a start on catching up on my YouTube buddies -- they've been busy and productive!!! My young and oh so talented friend Randy aka 'Bluesy' did this excellent tribute to Isaac Hayes, whose work I have long admired, and I'm sharing it with y'all. Enjoy!!!!!!

On the Road Again . . .
Before I hit the byways and highways tomorrow. I'm going to try to get by and visit y'all and get caught up a bit. Some delays have already reared their ugly heads but I will definitely be in Toledo for Barb's 80th birthday party come hell or high water. That said, I'm taking the easy way again -- so I can get some sleep! It's been that kind of day.

What Happened to Dancing Cheek to Cheek?
I was writing a post for today and the blog monster irretrievably ate it. Since it's one o'clock in the morning and I need to be at the beauty school at ten, I'm just going to cop out and post a video.
The music du jour was a classic -- one of my favorites with Fred and Ginger. And just remember, when someone tells you that Astaire was the greatest dancer in film, that Ginger did everything he did -- backwards and in high heels!!!!!!!!

Some Good Advice for Elders
In case no one noticed, May is Senior Citizens month (while I'd like that changed to Elders Month, I'm not going to war . . . yet.) so I'm going to do a few posts on aging now and then.
I receive a newsletter via email twice each month from the Ohio Department of Aging called "Aging Issues". It always is interesting and informative and relevant for elders and it keeps me informed of programs and services available to Ohio elders. They also have an excellent website. I enjoy both so much that I wonder if other states do something similar or if they even have a Department of Aging like we do. What does your state do for elders?
I think that most of us find driving a bigger hassle as we get older. Our days of playing Mario Andretti are over. "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" that Jan & Dean made famous in our youth is a rarity. Heck! I bet Jan & Dean have slowed down a lot, too. I think I'm happier in little Miss Ruby than I ever was in the 383 4-barrel convertible of my misspent youth and I'd rather dawdle along city streets or country roads than join the terrors of the Ohio Turnpike or the Interstate highway system. I swear they try to eat Miss Ruby and I alive.
In fact, I'm exploring an alternate route for my trip to Toledo to avoid the latter. I like seeing the little burgs and stopping at Mom & Pop restaurants for coffee or lunch. I don't think that faster is always better. Getting there is half the fun for me. And not having a big fat semi on my bumper lowers the stress. 'Sides all you see on the Turnpike are signs about the next service plaza while you're doing what I call the "orange barrel polka". Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way around the huge new bridge across the Maumee River so it will be "white knuckle" time.
This trip I plan to take pictures of the house where I grew up -- I might even knock on the door and talk to the people who live there now -- and I'm going to stop in Greenwich (pronounced 'green-witch' not 'grenitch') where we lived when I was born and look around and take photos. I'll probably also wander around the Point and see what's changed. I've promised Barb that we will go visit my dad's grave and take flowers -- she doesn't drive anymore. I'm going to have to be stoic -- I didn't cry through the whole thing when Dad died until the honor guard fired their salute at the cemetery -- and then I fell apart and sobbed uncontrollably. On another level, I think I know why that happened but I'm not going to go there.
All that said, I'm looking forward to my 'sentimental journey' and here's Doris Day with her first #1 hit when she sang with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. Enjoy!!!! My dad used to sing this song to me.

I receive a newsletter via email twice each month from the Ohio Department of Aging called "Aging Issues". It always is interesting and informative and relevant for elders and it keeps me informed of programs and services available to Ohio elders. They also have an excellent website. I enjoy both so much that I wonder if other states do something similar or if they even have a Department of Aging like we do. What does your state do for elders?

"The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" that Jan & Dean made famous in our youth is a rarity. Heck! I bet Jan & Dean have slowed down a lot, too. Taking the Easy Way Out
Thank God it's Saturday!!! I'm putting my mind on hold after a difficult week that bodes for difficulties next week. Sigh. Friday was a busy day starting with the trip to the doc -- grrrr I'll save that for another blog -- followed by a few errands and then a really lovely evening out which is what I want to tell y'all about.
I've mentioned my good friend Marcia's cousin, Lois, who is our local theater impresario and the excellent dinner shows we've attended in the past. Wellllllllllllllll, last night was yet another fine production and an excellent dinner. It was a Johnny Mathis tribute show and featured a really talented young man who looked and sounded just like Johnny Mathis. It also featured some other local artists from Lois' repertory company singing wonderful songs that spanned the last six decades. It was a great evening and to be honest, I needed it.
Here's a video of my favorite of Johnny Mathis' beautiful love songs. It was the theme for the 1965 (the year I graduated from high school) film "The Sandpiper" which starred Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. I think it has some of the most gorgeous lyrics ever written. I always wanted someone who loved me like that. Sigh.

No Kvetching Today!
I hope y'all had a nice St. Paddy's and celebrated in a way y'all enjoyed. I joined a couple buddies at our local for a brewski and coffee. Gotta watch my budget.
I was a vegetable today. I slept in and spent the day reading blogs mostly except for watching a couple NCIS reruns -- Mark Harmon can call me anytime he wants.;-) I was glad to see everyone in a pretty good mood as I wandered the blogosphere. Tomorrow I have to face the real world and go take care of business.
That said, I'm being a lazy blogger today, too.
Folk music icon Odetta died Tuesday at age seventy-seven. I always loved her fabulous voice and style. As a daughter and grandaughter of railroaders, this song has always been one of my favorites. May a gracious God be good to her. I hope you enjoy it.

Either Way It's a Dang Nuisance
I've mentioned my thyroid problems frequently of late. Until you've dealt with it, you've really no idea how important that little gland just below your Adam's apple is to your health. While it's tiny -- it weighs in at less than an ounce -- the hormones it exudes affect every aspect of your metabolism. In short: when it's out of whack, so are you.
I've been studying it of late at the Mayo Clinic's wonderfully informative site on all things medical. It provides excellent tools to learn about your diagnosis and treatment as well as a symptom checker to help you make the decision to see a doctor. Actually, it's a hypochondriac's dream and can scare the hell out of you if you're of that ilk. I'm just one of those people who, when I or friends and family have medical issues, I have to know everything about it.
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) two years ago after much testing and the discovery of tiny nodules (goiters) on my thyroid. The doctor put me on medication that made me feel better and I've had frequent blood tests to measure certain hormones that create this imbalance. My doctor took me off my medication almost a year ago so they could measure the difference in my blood work and decide how to proceed. Later this month I will be learning my fate and hopefully, something will be done so I feel human again. However, the powers on high are messing with my health care programs so don't count on it. I really believe people are dying because of the bureaucrats.
If y'all read Incurable Insomiac, you know that Steph is not only an insomniac but she suffers from Hashimoto's Disease, a variation of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). It's an auto-immune disease unlike the other two. It's interesting that all make a body feel totally exhausted. They all affect one's memory and sleep patterns and mood. Whether your thyroid is working overtime like mine or a is slowpoke like Steph's, you are a hurtin' unit and tired all the time. Amazing that such a tiny thing has such power.
I wanted to upload a chart I made with all the symptoms but Blogger wouldn't let me so I wasted lots of time and had to put links up instead. Copying and pasting it is far too messy. The symptoms of any of the three make a body tired and miserable but the only one that has "nervousness, anxiety, and irritability" listed is hyperthyroidism. So now you know why I'm such a Cranky Old Broad.
Here's a video by The Godfather of Soul (at age 63) that states what my goal is and demonstrates the energy I want back. And I hope Doc Smith makes it happen -- soon!

Are You Wearin' Your Green?
It's Saint Patrick's Day!!!!
Today we celebrate Saint Patrick who converted Ireland to Christianity. Legend also has it that he drove the snakes out of Ireland. There's no way to prove he did or didn't but there's nary a snake to be found on the Emerald Isle. (I wish someone could tell me who the wag was who called Senator Joe McCarthy -- best known for his witch hunt for communists in the 50s -- "the snake St. Patrick missed." I'd like to shake his hand.) But I digress. One story about St. Patrick is probably true. It's said that he used a shamrock in his teachings to explain the Holy Trinity. Makes perfect sense to me. As Irish folk have settled around the globe, they have taken their saint and traditions with them and everybody's Irish on St. Paddy's Day!!!!!
Some Irish blood (and green beer) flow through this old gal's veins and I've had a penchant for things Irish since I was a wee lass. Even me beloved daughter's name is Moira Kathleen! My favorite Irish folk group is The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Tommy passed away in 2007 at age seventy-five after a courageous battle with lung cancer and kept performing nearly to the end. Here's a video of the him and the Clancy Brothers. The Clancys sang this song again at a concert in his memory. I hope you enjoy it!

Random Sunday Thoughts
It's been quite a week. Still trying to get things organized on every level. And the damned thyroid keeps slowing me down. Oh well. I thought about writing about politics but decided that I'm grumpy enough so I took pity on my blood pressure and canned that idea.
Judy over at Imagine . . . got me thinking about Irving Berlin's wonderful music -- his musicals in particular -- and I had a wonderful time at YouTube watching and listening to video clips. Here's a favorite of mine from the movie version of Annie Get Your Gun with Betty Hutton and Howard Keel. If it doesn't set y'all a-smilin', you're grumpier than me!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

Update
Just a note to tell y'all that what Hemingway called the Black Dog is camped on my doorstep. Reality has hit me square in the face and I may have to go to war. I'm not certain what my next move is but I'm going to have to do something so I can survive. When one is dealing with bureaucrats, it isn't easy. I pray that y'all will never, ever have to do so.
I'm too damned old to deal with this crap and it's making me nuts -- or is that nuttier? A couple so-called friends have added to the deterioration of my mental state and needless to say it hasn't helped. The nice thing about difficult times is that you realize who your true friends are and many thanks to those of you in the Blogosphere who have been wonderfully supportive.
I've been doing a lot of thinking and reading to try to put life back on an even keel. I haven't written here because I hate being a drama queen. Believe it or not, housework is good therapy; getting organized and clearing clutter is good for the soul. Sleeping is good, too, when I can manage it. I've also been listening to a lot of old music and will share some with y'all soon.
Here's a song that touched my heart the moment I heard it back in '75 when Janis won a Grammy for it and still tears me up today -- the more thing change, they more they stay the same. Sigh. It probably explains why I stopped going to my high school reunions. Probably that my life feels so insecure is making the old insecurities surface. Sighhhhhhhh.

Update
I finally mustered the courage to open the letters sitting on my desk and it was every bit as bad as I expected. I am angry. I am also going to take action and go to war if I have to do so. I am dealing with ugly, stupid bureaucrats who don't give a damn about anything or anyone but their measly little ill-paid bailiwick. I will be on the phone bright and early to rain on their parades. I will follow that with phone calls to my lawyer and my Congressman and a communique will also be going to President Obama. In the meantime, I may have to quit my new job. I am not happy about this at all.
However, speaking of raining on someone's parade, here's my favorite song from "Funny Girl" which is one of my favorite musicals. I think it's probably Streisand at her very best. Enjoy!!!!!

Tired and Scared
Working a forty hour week has been hard on the old gal. I'm not used to it but reminded myself that it's just temporary. I wish that I could make the bureaucrats understand the latter. Right now they are trying to take away some benefits from me and that's causing extra stress on the Cranky Old Broad -- and that's my excuse for neglecting y'all while I rage and fight against the machine aka bureaucracy. I do apologize sincerely and will spare you the drama.
The sad part is I may have to quit the job. Unfortunately, if I do, I will have a hard time making it -- having stayed at home to raise my kids really has a nasty effect on what I get for Social Insecurity. I am afraid of what's next for me but I don't want to whine.
Instead, I think we need another blast from the past with a favorite clip from one of my musicals!!!!!! I really loved this scene with the late, great Yul Brynner! Enjoy!!!!
I'll be around again if I ever get this damned mess straightened out and can think rationally again.
