Raising Hell in Ohio -- Again!

I'm pretty buried but I wanted that y'all again for helping me celebrate my blogoversary! I treasure each and every one of you!   

For being what Rush Limaugh calls "flyover country", we are getting pretty damned noisy and militant here in Ohio. Yesterday a group of Ohioans demonstrates at the Statehouse in Columbus to protest fracking in the wake of an earthquake just northeast of me near Youngstown. And I simply had to share this excellent video from my young friend Lauren captured this great protest song written and performed by a very talented elder lady who wrote and performed it! Please note the abundance of grey hair in the crowd!!!



Isn't this great!!!! (And even better knowing that New Hampshire told Rick Santorum that they think he's nuts by giving him a last place finish.) Thank you, New Hampshire!!!!

AWOL

Sorry I've been MIA.  The stress of Congress' inane antics and assorted nonsense here at home, frayed my last nerve and a break was necessary.  I did try to keep up on y'all and if I missed anyone, it was a sin of omission  not commission.  I'm probably gonna be slow on this for couple days -- I'm still not 100% and need to sort through some stuff but I do want to stay current here in the Land of Blog and I'll do what I can when I can.

* I saw a new acronym this morning:  the GOS (Great Orange Satan) and I think I like it a lot!!! What do y'all think? 

* I'm glad (read: relieved)  that my SS was deposited but am not happy with the deal with the GOS our representatives made.  We need to remember those who want to kill us off at election time next year and kick 'em out.  As it is, it's canceling any summer plans I had because I have to do my best to get some cash stashed.  I'm allowed to pay my bills and eat -- albeit very frugally. No road trips; no restaurant meals/nights out; no purchases except for scrips and necessities. I also canceled my annual Hall of Fame festival party/partying this weekend -- I just don't feel well enough to cope with it all.

Happy Birthday, Medicare!

I don't usually do two posts in a day but this is important!

Tomorrow, July 28th, is the 46th Birthday of Medicare. That's right! For 46 years Medicare has been helping elders meet their medical costs! As a stroke survivor, I don't know what I'd do without it -- especially with the cost of healthcare these days. Actually, I do know what it's like not to have health care and it ain't pretty -- at that, my friends, is is a gross understatement. I got a note from We are One, one of the many groups whose newsletter I read, asking me to join them for a rally at the East side of the Capitol for a rally tomorrow afternoon. I obviously can't make it so I'm passing it on to any of y'all who are interested, able, and live in the D.C. area. I wish I could be there -- the rebel in my soul would love to go but I'd prolly get busted and D.C. isn't famous for it's luxurious jail.

Please take look at the comments today's earlier post and see what and check out Cop Car's research/comment re: her investment in Social Security. It's also posted on her blog. It's an eye-opener!

Also, keep in mind that Social Security is NOT an entitlement -- we PAID into it every hour we worked or that our spouse worked.

This Is What We Are Dealing with in Ohio's 16th District

Just when the idiot Congressman my fellow citizens elected, it got worse. This guy owns nursing homes (and has been sued by patients and their families) and should be the last member of Congress to want to end Medicare and Medicaid!

Here's an the bulk of an email I received from ProgressOhio:

ProgressOhio is inviting constituents, seniors, and activists to attend a press event at Rep. Renacci’s office Thursday July 21st.

Give Renacci a Red Card on Medicaid!

Rep. Renacci’s security and staff controlled the debate at his recent Town Hall. He used tactics such as distributing Red Cards and Green Cards for the crowd to use and then he asked them questions in a way that confused them on how to use the cards to respond. Renacci also kicked individuals out of the meeting and his staff decided which questions would be discussed during the town hall.

Citizens both outside and inside the hall struggled to make their voices heard over the Congressman’s stifling tactics.

Now you have your chance to send Representative Renacci a message and REALLY have your voice heard.

Politicians are currently negotiating a deal in Washington that would cut Medicaid for seniors, people with disabilities, and children while at the same time giving millionaires another tax break. Their schemes could cost Ohio billions of dollars and thousands of jobs!

Medicaid is how most of us pay for long-term care in our homes, assisted living facilities, or in nursing homes. Do we want to go back to the days of the poor farms and old folks homes?

Let Rep. Rennaci know that he was elected to represent all of the people in his district and that we are opposed to cuts in Medicaid.

Join ProgressOhio, a Health Care for America Now (HCAN) partner, retirees, and activists on June 30th in Columbus to send a message to Rep. Renacci that we want our voice heard on Medicaid.

On one hand, I want to go and I want to holler really loud; on the other, his office is located smack in the middle of the richest township in our area and place where there is insufficient parking. AND the cops are the nastiest in the county. Therefore, I don't think I should go because y'all know I'm not bloody likely to sit quietly and swallow the swill he'll be spouting. I do think it's interesting that there wasn't an announcement of this in his latest email newsletter which tells me how interested he is in hearing from us.

I feel kind of gutless for not going but I can't afford bail but the only one who takes care of me is the old lady I see in the mirror every morning and Jiminy Cricket tells me to stay home.

I did, however, sign up to volunteer with ProgressOhio and I plan to help campaign against him in the coming election. Does that count?

Had to Post This

I'm still not quite up to what passes for par today. The official diagnosis was a TIA which some call a mini-stroke. I've had them before -- usually when the world gangs up on me -- I'm sorta used to it after over thirty years as a stroke survivor and I tend to blow it off. However, I don't want to have to postpone my trip up north as I think it will be beneficial for my mental and physical health so I'm going to be a tad sparse in the blogging department.

However, I was thrilled when I saw this video at Crooks & Liars this morning and wanted to share it with y'all! This is a great lady who actually likes elders and makes great sense!!!!! That she won in a traditionally Republican district should send a message to the GOP that elders are angry and they vote! Ms. Hochul's victory gives me hope!

Tuesday Random Thoughts

I'm really getting dedicated around here. I knocked a lot off on my 'gottado' list yesterday -- even some of the tasks that I hate and have been on my list far too long. Unfortunately, there's still a lot to do. Have y'all ever noticed that when you start on a task, at least three or four more rear their pointy little heads?
Still, I'm trying to maintain momentum and hope to have everything shipshape by the time I have my surgery. Recuperating goes better in a clean house where I can find everything in my not so humble opinion.

* So the high and mighty are talking about 'rescuing' Social Security. Excuse me? Last I heard Social Security was solvent. I think it's a grab at us elders. What cracked me up was this quote from consultant Ana Rappaport:

"The issue of elderly poverty for women, however, might need further attention. 'We need to remember that for four out of 10 older women alone, and for a very large number of the bottom third of the population economically, Social Security is virtually all they have in retirement,” Rappaport said. 'And that is not likely to change although one might be able to reduce that number.'"

All I can say is Ms. Rappaport needs to call me and I'll explain the cold hard reality of being an poor old lady to her.

* Kent McKamy, one of my favorite New Yorkers, sent this video along and I enjoyed it so much that I simply had to share it! I think y'all will, too. I have never been a fan of Kiss but this raised my opinion of them more than a couple notches.



* Alaskans have a hilarious sense of humor as demonstrated by this 47 second video from an event in Ketchikan. I hope y'all laugh as hard as I did!



* I'm glad that some of y'all enjoyed the River Stones project. I put all of them here. I liked the discipline of coming up with an idea/comment each day and have missed it since it ended. I'm thinking of continuing it and also using it as a place to write about other things as well. Y'all are welcome to stop by and see where my mind is taking me. I joined Fiona's Writing Our Way Home community and I think it could be an interesting adventure. I also hope I find time to participate.

Speaking of time, I'm off and running. It's errand and shopping day and the list is not short. Sigh.

The Berniebuster!

I had read in my travels that Bernie Sanders was going to do what the press is now calling a "Berniebuster" but until I checked my blogs (which now number around 100 and thank God they all don't post every day) and learned that Bernie Sanders had the floor of the Senate. I cancelled my plans for the day and I went there and I stayed with him until the very end. This is a brave, strong committed man who is a champion of us ordinary mortals. I do allow the naysayers their stance but not here and not today. I'm against making the rich richer and the poor poorer and endangering my life and survival.

If you're interested in what he said in the 8 1/2 hours he spoke, you can find it here. As I've said before, Bernie Sanders is my hero. I don't expect anyone to watch/listen to the whole thing but if y'all can spare about 15-20 minutes, you'll get the gist of what he talked about yesterday. If you're an ordinary mortal, you will think what Senator Sanders proposes is right. If you don't, go away.

I'm pretty proud to be an Ohioan right now. My senators are doing the right thing and supporting Bernie Sanders' stance on the tax cuts for billionaires.

The surprise is that my retiring GOP senator, George Voinovich, is downright militant!!! Sean Hannity called him a traitor which, for me, is a badge of honor. I nearly choked on my cornflakes watching this short video. Goooooo George!!!!



My other senator, Sherrod Brown (D-OH), has mobilized. He has a petition and y'all can sign it to support the defeat of the 'tax cuts for billionaires' bill. He was on Rachel Maddow and sounded great!!!



I hope y'all take the time to check out the links and video. Now is NOT the time to bury our heads in the sand.

Surprise!!!!!!

Being the good Elderblogger that I am, when our fearless leader, Ronni Bennett, sounds a call to arms at TGB I mobilize. In this case it was emails to our congressmen/women and our senators which I promptly sent to all three gentlemen.

My congressman (whose campaign I worked on) John Boccieri, or probably one of his interns, sent a 'canned' email to the effect that he was leaving office in a couple weeks. Does this mean he's not voting/working to the bitter end? If not, why not?
Aren't we paying him to the bitter end?

As usual, Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) is silent. He used to be our governor and was Cleveland's mayor before that and then we sent him to the Senate and he's retiring after this session so he can do what he does best without any hassle: toe the GOP line. I have never voted for him and I have never had a response to a letter, an email or a phone call from him or his office when I have tried to communicate with him about a problem or issue. Consider that his tenure in elective office in Ohio has covered most of my adult life and I've never even had a canned email from him so it's no great surprise when I don't hear from him unless he wants to get re-elected. However, with outcry on this I would think a response would be merited. Maybe he and his staff are too busy planning his retirement party.

My other Senator, Sherrod Brown (D-OH), isn't on my top 10 Ohio politicians list but he does respond now and again when I write or call. Today I nearly went into shock when I read his response because it was well-written and specifically addressed my concerns.

Here it is:

Dear Ms. Dennison:

Thank you for getting in touch with me about the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. I appreciate your thoughts on the recommendations of the bipartisan commission.

The commission — which was created through a presidential order — was established to develop bipartisan proposals that would eliminate the deficit. The commission revealed its recommendations to the public on December 1. The report is awaiting final approval from the commission's members.

I look forward to working on a bipartisan basis to address the nation’s budget deficit. However, I am deeply concerned by proposals that would jeopardize Social Security and Medicare benefits for Americans who worked hard to earn these benefits. I joined in sponsoring a resolution, S.Res. 664, that expresses strong opposition to privatizing Social Security, raising the retirement age, or in any other way jeopardizing or reducing benefits. Social Security does not contribute to the deficit, and should not be part of the debate on how we balance the budget.

Beyond Social Security, we must not haphazardly cut government spending on programs that are crucial to the well-being of Americans. For example, I would strongly oppose freezing military pay or cutting funds used to provide food, transportation, and other necessities to seniors on fixed incomes.

The best way to reduce the deficit is by increasing jobs in our country. Government deficits always go up in a recession as programs like unemployment insurance expand and tax revenues go down. By promoting pro-growth economic strategies we can also slash our budget deficit. A prime example of this is aggressive enforcement of international trade rules. As long as we permit trading partners to manipulate their currency and perpetuate other trade abuses, our nation’s economic growth will be compromised.

As I review the commission’s recommendations, I will keep your views in mind. Thank you again for getting in touch with me.

Does the Stupidity Astound You or What?

I am an angry old woman and y'all can bet I'll on the phone to appropriate people and hollerin' billy blue blazes as my grandpa used to say!!!!

After I found out that I really did have Medicare Part D, I discovered that Ohio is changing my provider from SilverScript, who impressed me with their helpful CSRs and the low co-pay, to Cigna. Why? Because it was going to cost them an extra 63 cents a month. I do realize that could add up to real money 'cause there are lots of low income elders like me in Ohio. However, I just got done looking at the info in Cigna's fancy brochure, and my co-pay will nearly triple. We low income elders get to have our co-pay on generics go from $1.10 to $3.00! Add that over a year and we start talkin' real money. And for brand name, it goes from $3.10 to $30.00. I have, in the last month or so, filled six prescriptions and I spent $8.60. Next year those same scrips will cost $45.00!!!! AND they don't accept the pharmacy I've been using and like for well over thirty years!

You can bet that when I finish this, I'm going to be on the phone hollering at Cigna. And I'll also be calling to see if I can keep SiverScript by paying that 63 cents (it adds up to $7.66 a year), you can safely bet your bottom dollar, I will. And tomorrow, y'all can safely bet that I'll be calling my State Senator and my State Representatives and give those bozos a piece of my alleged mind. I just want to know how much it cost for them to sell their souls to Cigna.

Oh well. I let y'all know how this comes out but not tomorrow -- tomorrow I think we're due for some fun here in Kay's World!!!!

Hey, Oprah? Elders Need Love, Too!

My friend and fearless leader of the Elderbloggers, Ronni Bennett of Time Goes By has begun a crusade to encourage Oprah to support and address the issues of aging in our society. I say, "Amen and Hallelujah!" It's about time, Oprah, that you realize that, at 55, you're no longer a spring chicken, as my granny used to say and that aging can be a rich and vital experience if approached properly.

Besides, we elders of today aren't the same as our grandparents. We are great in numbers that are growing by leaps and bounds. Most of us are still active and interested in being included in society. All one has to do is read our blogs to learn what a diverse, active and engaged group we are. Oh, and I forgot "fun"! We like fun. We are not caricatures or objects for derision or disdain. We are here, for better or worse and we want you on our side, Oprah.

Angry and Upset and Sick and at a Loss

Get ready! I am in full-tilt boogie screaming yenta mode with The Cranky Old Broad along for the ride!

As y'all know, I have been being treated for an upper respiratory infection for the last two weeks. The first week the doctor at Immediate Care gave me some antibiotics and told me to go to bed for two days. I followed orders and went back to work even though I'd seen no improvement. A few days later (a week ago) when the first round of antibiotics ran out and I was still coughing up my lungs and generally feeling lousy, I called the clinic I go to because I have crappy medical coverage and explained what was going on and they told me to go to the after hours clinic and see the doctor there. So I did. That doctor put me on stronger antibiotics, prednisone and an inhaler and sent me back to work, etc. despite that I felt really awful.

Today I still felt like death and the meds obviously hadn't done their job and mid-afternoon at work I suddenly felt dizzy and like steel bands were wrapped around my head and neck and my vision is a bit blurry. I called the clinic nurse and got a recording and left a message for her to call me back. She never did. I started feeling worse and was in tears and I decided that I should go home so I told the boss that I was going to take off a bit early. He said okay so I came home.

I called a friend in hope that I'd feel better and made myself eat supper. Nothing helped -- the steel bands were still there as well as the vague dizziness so I called the clinic number again. humanoid answered and I explained my problem. She told me that a nurse would call me in a half hour. The nurse actually called and again, I explained what I'd been experiencing and she told me to come to the hospital. I hesitated to do so because I really didn't think I should drive and but decided to go ahead. (Before y'all tell me to call someone, experience has taught me that no matter how people tell you to call if you need help, they don't mean it unless you're bleeding to death.)

I got to the hospital okay and told my story -- AGAIN! -- and they took my blood pressure and I got to answer all the same damn silly questions yet again. When I finally got to see the doctor he told me that I had been being treated for the wrong things with the wrong stuff and that my problem was either viral or allergy-related (I don't have allergies) and that I had no need to be there but he was going to order me Zyrtec and cough medicine. AND he told me that it was an emergency room and I shouldn't be there. (So why did the nurse tell me to go there?) I got angry and got dressed went to the front desk and asked to see someone in authority. They asked if I'd seen a doctor. I said yes and that I wanted to see someone in authority. No one available I was told. Right. I came home. And yeah, they'll send me a bill.

I still feel like hell. If anything, I feel worse. I guess that I'm not allowed to get decent treatment. I wonder how McCain and Obama would fix this. Then again, I think I know and I'll be no better off than I am now.

In my next life I'm gonna be rich instead of good-lookin' (eyes rolling -- uh huh)! Sigh. Suggestions/solutions are welcome.

An Ordinary Guy Beats the IRS! Hallelujah!!!!

I haven't much time to write tonight so I thought I would share this story I found today. I think y'all will cheer AND some of you who are fortunate to have investments might even benefit!

Seventy-two year old Charles Ulrich of Baxter, MN, an accountant for forty-nine years, took on the IRS and won after slugging it out for seven years! The best part is that possibly tens of thousands of taxpayers could benefit from his struggle and victory.

Even better, if any of y'all qualify you can go to Chuck's website and he will prepare your request for a refund for a fee although he does say that the principle is more important than the money.

So read the story and if you get a boatload of cash, don't forget who told y'all about it!!! LOL!

This story confirms what I've long suspected: the IRS doesn't understand it's own rules. This makes me wonder how many other sca . . . er . . . mistakes they're making/have made at our expense.

Random Thoughts from Motown

The Kay is in Motown -- i.e., the western suburbs -- and it's a miracle given the rainstorm I drove smack into after I got to Cleveland and followed for most of the rest of my journey along the Turnpike and the Interstate! The Man had called before I left home and warned me about it but I blithely replied that it would stop before I got there. It did -- just about 10 miles from his place. I am, however, proud of myself -- I managed not to get panicky and kept up with traffic pretty well except near the bridge in Toledo where visibility was iffy at best. The weather has been really nice since I arrived and I'm crossing my fingers for the trip home.

* If y'all haven't been to see Ronni over at Time Goes By today, I suggest y'all go take a look. She has some pretty good videos among her interesting news clips -- I especially took issue with the one with the younguns blasting us elders. Ahhhhhhhh callow youth!!!!!! I wish I was still young enough to know everything.

* We had a nice Fourth. We went over to his mom's and spent some time with her and a couple of his siblings. One of his sisters always wants us to visit her and sort of looked to me for support. Seems like she should know by now that he doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do.

* I'm heading back to Ohio on Tuesday A.M. I'm hoping a to fit in a sentimental side trip -- I'll visit my dad's grave in Toledo and drive by the house where I grew up (and probably shed a tear for happier times) and I might even have lunch at Tony Packo's for the best hot dogs in the world!!! All y'all who are inveterate M*A*S*H fans will recall Klinger (Jamie Farr -- a Toledo native) talking about Packo's. He didn't lie -- the sauce is to die for -- and the beans are awesome. I remember when it was a little beer joint in the old Hungarian neighborhood; now it's a tourist attraction thanks to Farr's contribution of M*A*S*H memorabilia.

* All weekend the city has been hosting its annual festival in the park behind The Man's building. Amusement rides and what I call "fair food" are featured and bands of all popular music genres take the stage nightly. We've included it our walks and tonight there will be fireworks to close the festival. I'm told that the view of it is really incredible from his place as he's on the 7th floor.

Mortality Check

It's not often that I'm at a loss for words but this post has been very difficult to write. The Kay is sad; she is mourning. One of the things I hate most about getting older is that I'm losing people. And wax melancholy at what I call a "mortality check", i.e., a mental hotfoot that sets me thinking about why I'm still here.

I, like many of you, have lost two people I greatly enjoy and admire in the Blogosphere recently: Joycelyn Ward of Maya's Granny and Winston Rand of Nobody Asked . . . . Both were wonderful voices in the Blogosphere and they will be greatly missed by many. Joycelyn passed away after a long recovery from a serious illness; Winston's illness was quick and unexpected.

I didn't get to know Joycelyn well except through her blog and I admired her greatly for her outstanding insights, wit, and wisdom. She was a great lady whose contributions gave me a great deal of food for thought. Her daughter, Julie, has written several excellent, loving posts there in her memory.

Winston was a definite friend. I call people like him Friends I've Never Met of which all y'all who stop by here are a part. If I moaned and groaned about a computer dilemma here, there would be an email from him post haste with a diagnosis and a fix. He and I both were fans of Thoreau and we'd send each links about him now and again. I always enjoyed stopping by his place for a dose of his wry humor and cutting insights. His beloved wife, aka Roomie, has written a lovely memorial about him on his blog.

The memorials written by both Julie and Roomie set me a-thinking but I'm not going there for now. I share their loss and have both families in my prayers.

May they both be in the loving arms of a loving and gracious God. I shall miss them both greatly.

It's Never Too Late!!!!!

I told y'all yesterday that I'd be attending the blues festival downtown with my buddy Marcia and her husband. Mike. It was awesome. Marcia said that we should be there for the start of it a 4 p.m. because the group that was opening was really outstanding. It was decided that we meet there because I didn't really want to stay out too late.

It looked like the usual thing when I got there after lucking out and finding a really good parking place. The food and beverage vendors were there in force hawking outrageously priced snack food and four dollar beer -- yikes! Something in my frugal soul grates at that and I was glad that I had the presence of mind to bring along a Diet Coke. I looked around and didn't see Marcia and Mike anywhere so. as agreed, I called her cell. They were parking their car and I stationed myself where we could find each other easily after telling her to hurry because the band had started and sounded great! We found a couple other friends and it made for a fun time with great music and good company!!!

For the next two hours we were entertained wonderfully by Wallace Coleman of Cleveland and his band. The crowd wasn't that big and I suspected it would be a lot larger when The Fabulous Thunderbirds took the stage later in the evening. What interested me was that there weren't many young people there. The crowd was mostly elders who were applauding and yelling appreciatively including moi! As Coleman's band ended their set, Mike spied black clouds rolling in so we hustled over to the nearby Arcadia Grill just as raindrops started falling. We were lucky enough to get a table and, even better, our waitress was an old acquaintance of Marcia and Mike so she took great care of us keeping our glasses full and bringing our supper in a timely manner. She also got a great tip because rather than bother with a lot of math, we each threw in a twenty-dollar bill. It was still raining with no end in sight when we finished our meal so we all headed home agreeing that we have to do it again -- and soon!

After I got home, I decided that I wanted to know more about Wallace Coleman so of course I googled him and was truly amazed at what I learned about him.

His website is here and it gives his bio and info on his CDs (yeah, I gotta have at least one!). What astounded me most was not that he's 72 but that he didn't begin his professional music career until he was 51 after retiring from a well-known Cleveland bakery. And winning a Living Blues award in 2002 goes to show that the years he spent playng his harmonica on breaks at work paid off well!!!! What an inspiration he is for those of us of a certain age!!!!
