It's Veterans' Day and time to recall the brave men and women who have served their country in war and peace. I found this video (less than three minutes) absolutely lovely and hope y'all do, too.
As I watched it, I couldn't help but think about the young Iraq war vet who came back home only to be shot at Occupy Oakland and lies in the hospital there. The irony of that makes me very sad.

A Couple Notes
Thanks for all the good words yesterday -- especially the ones from Gene who made my Monday so very nice!!!
* Today getting in the swing of things was difficult but I did manage to get some visiting in and if y'all didn't see me, I'll be around.
* My computer woes continued and I finally decided to switch my default browser to Firefox. Hopefully, MSN can stuff it where the sun don't shine. We'll see how that goes so please bear with me as I adjust to the ins and outs as well as the peccadilloes that are always inherent in any software one encounters. Helpful hints and advice are always welcome.
* Glen Beck really did it this time . . . in less than two minutes! Y'all can see and read about it here.
* The Ohio Democratic Party is holding a 'Good Jobs, Strong Communities' Rally at the Statehouse in Columbus again on Thursday!!! I wish I could go but I can't. Think maybe we're fed up here in Buckeye land?
* Have y'all seen this man? He looks like a man to be reckoned with carefully.
I just wish he'd use some of that with certain members of Congress.
* Here's the song that's been (annoyingly) nagging at me since my birthday and I'm hoping that by posting it, it will go away and leave me be 64 my way. It's really sort of a guy song but it won't go away. Sigh.

Celebration!!!!!!
Today's post is on a happier note! This afternoon my beloved little brother, First Sergeant Mike, and the 762nd Transportation Company are returning from a year in Iraq. And the families and friends are gathering to welcome them home. Our family will be well-represented as Karen and I have been burning up the phone lines to make sure that everything is in order and we do Mike proud.
I took the picture above last summer when he was home on R&R. He's with his best girls: his wonderful wife and his beautiful grandaughters!!!!! Mike has always has liked babies. He was about 12 when my children were born and delighted in them and they in him.
There will be a gathering of the families to honor Mike and his company at a local middle school. In addition to Karen and I, her sister, her daughter and the girls and my nephew will be there. I had mentioned to my ex-husband that Mike was coming home and he asked if he could come. I said yes so he'll be there, too. Mike told Karen no party at the house afterwards -- he just wants to rest and then he and Karen are going to take a trip. I can't say I blame him and I told Karen we can party later whenever he's ready.
At any rate, it's going to be a great day!!!!!

A Few Random Thoughts and an Update
It's crazy here in Kay's wonderful world. All sorts of changes are happening. I'm sleeping 10-12 hours a day and therefore getting nada, zero, zilch done because I wake up sluggish and groggy.
* Tomorrow is new doctor day -- finally! -- and I have a whole list of issues for him/her to address. And I'm ready to go to war if they are not taken seriously. I'm also considering a change in doctors and am working to make that happen.
* I was in ER over the weekend. When I returned from Toledo, I fell on my front steps while I was unloading my car. My ankle hurt and I've been hobbling around but I ignored it and hoped that it would go away. It didn't, but I put off doing anything about it because I knew I'd be seeing the doc soon. I finally went to the ER and am now sporting a brace on my left ankle for a severe sprain. Needless to say, it's slowing me down a lot. The worst part is that this is my good ankle. Sigh.
* Tornado season is here and we're under a watch as I type this. In Ohio we just change the type of lousy weather to put us crazy -- or is that crazier? I looked at the map online and I think if one hits, it will be south of us.
* The picture below is of my baby brother, First Sergeant Mike (and yeah, we look a lot alike -- just like my dad.). It was taken as the Army Reserve's 762nd Transportation Company prepared to leave for a year-long deployment to Iraq. He has been in the regular Army and Reserves for over twenty-eight years and is a veteran of Desert Storm. He is active in Rolling Thunder -- an organization started by the Vietnam vets/motorcycle enthusiasts to honor those who gave their lives in 'Nam and to support our troops today and the issues of POWs/MIAs. (They're the guys who ride to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial every year on Memorial Day.) One of their members chronicled the 762nd's Departure and my brother here. I thought it a lovely tribute. Please pray to whatever God you believe in for their safe return to their families. [Notes: a) Mike and I don't have the same last name because my stepfather adopted him when he was twelve. b) There's more to come on this story. My world has more twists than pretzel!]

Happy Veteran's Day!!!!
I hope y'all get the chance to hug your favorite Vet today!!!!! My daughter, a veteran of the U.S. Navy during 9/11, lives in Maine so I'll just call her. I'll do the same for my brother, a veteran of Desert Storm. My Dad, a WWII veteran, has gone to his reward so I'll probably call his widow and reminisce about the pride he had in his service and say a prayer for him. When he died, he was commander of hus VFW Post -- an honor of which he was intensely proud. All my uncles are veterans, too -- most of them served in Germany in the aftermath of WWII. I am proud that my family and many of my friends have answered the call to defend our country.
To all of my blogging friends who have served: THANK YOU!!!!!!!
To the young men and women serving us around the world: THANK YOU!!!!!!!
To all y'all: Hug your favorite Vet if you can and join me in saying a prayer for those who are now serving and those who gave their lives for our country. I like this one from the Franciscan Friars.
O Lord, today I thank You for our veterans, for their willingness to risk all so that our nation might dwell in peace and safety. May they find the honor and recognition they truly deserve.
I pray that You will heal the physical, spiritual, and psychological wounds some of these veterans have suffered. Bring a lasting peace to those who mourn the loss of comrades. Help them to find Your love and mercy, so that they may cope with the actions they may have had to take while they served our country.
Make them realize that the rules of engagement in war do not always follow the laws of God, but give them solace by Your scripture passages that show them that sometimes battle is necessary for the common good. Amen.
