It Ain't Easy.

Quitting smoking isn't easy. I have now officially quit after a month or so of cutting down. When I was down to three a day, it was time. It's taken me a while. They say one can't quit by cutting down but that's what I did. I've been cutting down since my surgery last Spring. I think that breaking a habit is different for everyone. My biggest fear is gaining weight which I think is equally as bad as smoking so I'm fighting two battles at the same time. . . and it's no fun.

I found that the Internet is a great help on one hand and my worst enemy on the other as smoking and blogging seem to go hand in hand -- as you muse, compose and research your latest 'masterpiece.' The 'Net provides a lot help with quitting strategies. My favorite is the 5 minute rule, i.e., if you get the urge for a cig, wait five minutes -- it usually passes. Sometimes five minutes feels longer than others but it works for me -- so far. And if it doesn't, there are lots of other strategies to try. I'm committed to no drugs or pills or gum and not gaining a ton of weight.

Can I do it? Yes, I can.

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!!!!

Kay

  3. Congrats! Years ago, when I quit smoking I started running and lost weight. Now my knees are shot. It just goes to show you it's always something. If it isn't one thing it's another. Seriously, you'll enjoy not smoking.

Yes, there is no doubt in my mind that you CAN! Smoking is supposedly worse for one than is weight gain (within certain limitations, I'm sure); but, extra weight is certainly not something to wish for!!!!

    Yay, Kay!

  6. Good for you! I quita long time ago after 50 years of addition. It was tough. My trick was whenever I felt an big desire to light up I went for a walk. That also helped with the weight thing. Hang in there. Don't give in.

  8. Way to go! My husband tells me that the hard part of not gaining the weight is that food begins to taste so good as your taste buds recover. Weight loss is a huge struggle for me. Can't imagine doing both at the same time. Go, Kay, go!!!

  9. Keep up the good work, Kay. Mom did cut down in stages. She discovered she was taking a couple of puffs of a cigarette before putting it down and letting it burn up. She started putting it out and picking it up later. Then she started deciding that she would only smoke in designated areas. She stopped smoking at bed time (about the same time the bedroom tv broke and we never replaced it.) Then she banned cigarettes from the table by her recliner (no more smoking while watching tv.) That left only in front of the computers while surfing the net and at the dinner table after meals. When our computers died and we got the MacBooks we moved our surfing activities down to the living room which restricted where Mom could smoke and cut down the number she smoked each day. It was a lot easier when she decided to quit altogether. As you noticed so much of smoking--like eating--involves habits. And breaking habits is the first step in quitting. Persistence is the next.

    Doing great. Keep on.

  10. Good going, Kay. I know it'll be good for your old age health. I have heard it's the hardest addiction to break; so kudos for your progress in doing it.

  11. Once you decide to quit smoking for YOU.. not because of someone else.. it is a little easier.. and yes, when the desire comes.. find something else to do for a bit.. and drink water.. helps with the weight part too.. Good Luck with it.. we all wish you well.. Keep up the great work..

  12. Walk. Get a pedometer. If you can manage 8,000 steps a day you won't gain weight.
