Hillary's Face

Oh my! Just when I thought all the cheap shots at Hillary Rodham Clinton had been made, here comes her opponent, John Spencer, in the New York senatorial race accusing her of "having work done." His comments to Ben Smith of the New York Daily News were duly noted and recorded by Mr. Smith. Of course, John Spencer is now denying the comments.

Let me begin by saying that I'm not a fan of Mrs. Clinton and, in this instance, that's of no consequence whatsoever as I don't live in New York. Give the lady a break! She isn't running for Miss America; she's running for the U.S. Senate and whether or not she had the work done, which she denies, it's nobody's business but hers! Millions of 59-year-old women in this country have cosmetic procedures done every day. And I think they're all nuts. Since I'm also a woman of the same age, I feel qualified to comment here. I don't allow surgeons of any sort touch me unless it's absolutely necessary. I earned all of what I call my "character lines" and wear them proudly as a badge of honor and experience. I don't think there is one of us who hasn't stopped at the Clinique counter in Macy's and wondered if that 40-dollar face cream would help us get back the nice skin of our younger years. It's a girl thing. Our youth and beauty-oriented society and media plays on our insecurities about aging so I'm not throwing stones at any woman who opts for cosmetic procedures. It's about choices.

Frankly, I believe Hillary when she denies this allegation. She has never been a fashion plate or glamour girl. All one has to do is look at her pictures to see that she dresses like most career women did in the late 60s and 70s after Dress for Success for Women was published. Vaguely dowdy simple suits with simple blouses in low-key colors and simple, low-heeled pumps. I see her as hardly the sort of woman to submit to cosmetic surgery. Then again, if she had it, does it really matter? Did it change her views? Did it change her? I think not. To her credit, she laughed at Spencer's remarks about her high school picture.

I think John Spencer needs to concentrate on issues and not Hillary's face. He's over 30 points behind in the polls with the election less than two weeks away and his mud slinging about cosmetic surgery isn't going to get him the women's vote nor is making fun of her high school picture. I look back at my high school and college pictures and laugh a lot. I'm glad Hillary can, too. I wonder how John Spencer looked in his high school picture. If he wants to take Hillary to task – there are plenty of other issues to which he can speak that relate to the campaign's issues but I think he just did irreparable damage to his campaign.

  1. I may not be in love with some things about Hillary, but that's just a little too catty for me. Shame on you John Spencer....that will get you nowhere...at least it shouldn't.

  2. One of life's modern mysteries is how any woman or person of color supports a political party which, at it's base (if you will), couldn't care less if you died on the spot unless you were carrying a serving tray.

  4. Thanks for the great comments! I'm tired of women in whatever profession being judged by her face rather than her abilities. And AQ? That was quite an owwwwwwwwie! lol
