Post Debate Thoughts

Last night I helped put on a "watch party" for those of us who are working to re-elect Obama. The local Steelworkers union were kind enough to let us use their hall. Nothing fancy -- just soft drinks and snacks and good, like-minded folks getting together to watch the debate.

The President came out swinging and (I thought) delivered a haymaker to Mitt.
It was about time. When it was over, after I was finished cleaning up, I went to my car and cried and I wept all the way home. Neither candidate addressed elders -- especially those in poverty like me. Last year I received a $30 increase in my Social Security. My expenses increased over $100 because some benefits (like food) were taken away. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the math on that. This year we elders are getting a 1.7% COLA increase. If the above occurs again, I might as well commit suicide because things like internet service and Miss Ruby will have to go and since my ability to walk well is deteriorating, getting where I need to go will mostly be impossible.

Yeah, President Obama won the debate but I can't get too excited about it. I lose no matter who gets elected. I am glad he won but right now I'm truly frightened for my future other elders who are worse off than I am.

Happy Blogging!!!!

Kay

  1. I think to have Obama do what we want will require our being in his face. That's what lobbyists do. We used to think we could vote and forget about it for two years but we cannot. They are constantly bombarded; so people like you need to get your story out there many ways and then it will happen. Obama is though the only one where it has a chance of as listening to Romney not only does he not respect women unless they are subservient (like his wife), but he will owe too much to too many moneyed interests. With Obama though it takes keeping it out there. He needs that to have the power to push it through with a Congress that is not in favor of government helping anything.

  2. I too was upset that he did not mention seniors, especially low income seniors. I hope he corrects that omission in the last debate.

  3. Why did you lose food stamps. Was Kasich in on that?

  4. I agree. Although I admit I didn't watch the whole thing, I didn't hear them say a thing about Social Security or Medicare. Remember, if we fall off the so-called fiscal cliff on Jan. 1, there will be $11 billion cut from Medicare. I don't know exactly what that means for you or me . . . but it can't be good. Maybe next time out the moderator should ask for a pledge from both Obama and Romney to work across the aisle to make sure both SS and Medicare are on solid ground, and, you know, start to solve some of the other problems that Congress has ignored, denied or buried.

  5. Kay, In my not-so-humble opinion, the Democratic Party/Obama campaign OWES you, for crying out loud. You and all the limited income folks who have worked on this campaign--once more--and continue to believe even when expectations are not met.

  7. Kay, i am so sorry that what should have been joyful for you was not. Today I went to the site barackObamadotcomslashlgbt. That community uses thee site well. There is a very moving video part way down the page with some celebrities speaking out on behalf of Obama. maybe you need to have a place on that site with Betty white and that amazing senator reminding Obama that the wellbeing and dignity of seniors is as important as the wellbeing of all.

  8. If anyone can be counted on to think about seniors, I should think we'd still have MUCH better luck with Obama than Romney who doesn't care about the 47%.

  9. I read about the raise too..followed up by how Medicare will also go up.. so there goes our big raise of 1.7... Also they talked about how the AVERAGE $1,100 a month will get about $19 a month raise. You know, I know the wrong people.. because none of my friends and sure the heck isn't me.. that gets that much. With my Medicare deducted, I am way close enough to $600 to kiss it.

  10. Hang in there. As others have said, if Obama wins and the Democrats make gains in the Senate and House, there's at least some hope that things will be made better for people in your position. If the Republicans win, there is no chance.

Also, have you considered adding a donation button on your blog? I've seen other bloggers who were going through tough times get some relief by doing that. You won't make a lot that way but it might be enough to make a difference.

  11. Love Infidel753's comment...Obama offers some hope. I've neglected my google reader so I've missed your blog but I'm happy to learn that you've been working for Obama in Ohio! I'm praying hard though I cannot be too open about my convictions, since my income depends on a rather conservative Catholic parish. God be with you, Kay, and with all of us who are worried. I retire next year and am frankly pretty worried...

  12. I'd lost touch with your blog, I've neglected my google reader, but I thought of you today and am so happy to learn you are working for Obama. My thoughts and prayers go with you in Ohio. There is certainly more hope with obama, and you never know, we might win a few more Congressional seats. Hang in. I'm retiring next year, come what may...God bless, Sara
