Last night I helped put on a "watch party" for those of us who are working to re-elect Obama. The local Steelworkers union were kind enough to let us use their hall. Nothing fancy -- just soft drinks and snacks and good, like-minded folks getting together to watch the debate.
The President came out swinging and (I thought) delivered a haymaker to Mitt.
It was about time. When it was over, after I was finished cleaning up, I went to my car and cried and I wept all the way home. Neither candidate addressed elders -- especially those in poverty like me. Last year I received a $30 increase in my Social Security. My expenses increased over $100 because some benefits (like food) were taken away. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the math on that. This year we elders are getting a 1.7% COLA increase. If the above occurs again, I might as well commit suicide because things like internet service and Miss Ruby will have to go and since my ability to walk well is deteriorating, getting where I need to go will mostly be impossible.
Yeah, President Obama won the debate but I can't get too excited about it. I lose no matter who gets elected. I am glad he won but right now I'm truly frightened for my future other elders who are worse off than I am.
