Good News for Us Gals!

I have a subscription to Better Homes and Gardens.  I like the decorating ideas for my home and their great recipes for the rare times I actually cook.  They also have a column on health and imagine how surprised I was to see a glass of beer as an illustration in the March issue. Of course, I had to check it out.  Here's what I learned. (Guys can pass this on to their wives/S.O.s)

"A study of pre- and post-menstrual women found that those who drank a beer or two every day had greater bone mineral density in their hips  and spines compared with teetotalers. Beer is a rich source of silicon, a mineral that helps calcium and magnesium form bone tissue."

Since I'm the poster child (and already have a touch of  it a hip) for osteoporosis (tall and a tendency to be too thin), this sounds like an easy plan to save me from one of my biggest fears:  breaking my hip. Hell!!! Breaking anything scares the heck me because it wreaks havoc with my independence.

Hope y'all find this interesting and, perhaps, helpful!!!!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!

  1. Well, wine is supposed to be good for you, and now beer is too, so if they find benefits in whiskey and tequila, maintaing one's health will just get to be funner and funner. I mean, think about it, having rum with your broccoli and carrots.

  2. I heard about this last week and supposedly non-alcoholic beer has the same benefits. For those who can't drink alcohol.

Oh, Kay, some of us cannot tolerate the smell of beer, let alone the taste. Would you drink one beer each day for me?
    I knew you would!
    Thank you--

  8. They seem to come up with new studies every other day. At least this isn't a scare one. I can't drink beer because of allergy to hops. A few sips but it would give me asthma otherwise. Wonder if it works for men. My husband is the beer drinker in our family.

  9. Hooray. Now I can add another reason for occasional forays to Rhino's Sports Bar. To the other beverages mentioned in the comments, we might add an occasional medicinal gin and tonic. I've never known a gin and tonic drinker to come down with malaria.

  10. That is probably the reason I've fallen, but not broken anything!! I drink 1-2 beers per evening.

  11. But what about men ... oh, they probably couldn't find any to volunteer for the control group!

  12. wow. i'm sort of allergic to beer--can drink only one or two a year (!), but I can tell you my favorites: Peroni and Foster's lager (the oil can, which is hard to get around here).

anyway, keep up the good work in reporting on helpful scientific findings! You might enjoy reading about Dr. Terry Wahls of the U of Iowa medical faculty. She cured herself of MS--got up out of the wheelchair and took up first biking, then running--by eating her version of a paleo diet. check her out on facebook (if you can stand it)...

    happy new week!

Another side benefit here is that drunks are often relaxed enough when they fall that they don't do any damage to themselves! ;)

  20. I was wondering why one of my daintier female friends had taken up beer drinking. It seemed so out of character for her. She must have gotten the news.
And don't miss the Will Farrell commercials for Old Milwaukee.

  21. I'm sure beer makes me smarter, too. After three or four I pretty much start to know everything.

  22. These studies could drive you nuts. I knew there was a reason I should like beer; but for the life of me....I don't. Too bad they never came up with a study like that about Pepsi...that use to be my BIG addiction; but not that much anymore.
