Abraham Lincoln 1809-1865

Today marks the 202nd anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president of the United States. He was a Republican and frankly, I think he's weeping in Heaven at what his party has become. I also think that he is proud of Barack Obama.

It is said by many credible former residents that his ghost  visits the White House and I wonder if he's stopped by to visit Obama. Of course, we won't know that until Obama writes his memoirs because if he said he did, the Reckless Right would go crazy (crazier?). So I went to my database of quotes this morning and found a few quotes that are pertinent for our times to honor his memory. I hope y'all enjoy them.

On his success:

* I am a success today because I had a friend who believed in me and I didn't have the heart to let him down.

On preparation:

* If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend six hours sharpening my ax.

On winning:

* I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.

On silence:

* The time comes upon every public man when it is best for him to keep his lips closed.

On law:

* The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly.

On capitalism:

* These capitalists generally act harmoniously and in concert, to fleece the people.

On mankind:

* God must love the common man, he made so many of them.

My! How things have changed:

* Republicans are for both the man and the dollar, but in case of conflict the man before the dollar.

On freedom:

* Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.

On stress:

With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die.

And last but certainly not least . . .

* America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Hope y'all are having a great day!!!!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!

  1. Good Post! And I firmly believe that the only way America will be destroyed is from the inside and it looks like its getting close :)

Kay--Unfortunately, the last of the quotes that you post is all too true. We are coming closer each day. The USSR imploded, the Greeks imploded, the Romans imploded. Sad to think that we shall probably follow suit.

Sorry that I failed to say thank you for the wonderful posting. Each quote is well chosen.

  4. Kay, A few years back, I was blessed with the opportunity of visiting Springfield, Illinois new Lincoln museum. It is magnifiscent. I was astonished and appalled by the enlarged political cartoons of the time. So many, it would seem, truly despised Lincoln.

Obama's enemies are more than enough of a problem for him, but not yet to they come close to the horror Lincoln faced.

I always love to come visit your site.

  5. LTTS: I am afraid, too.

CC: I can't agree with you more. It's why I stay somewhat active in politics. I don't want to leave a legacy of not standing up for what I believe in for my grandchildren.

An acquaintance once told me, when I said that I was an independent, that if I didn't stand for something, I would fall for anything. I told her (not very nicely) that I stood for my God, my family, and the Constitution of the United States. AND I didn't see her helping my nice Congressman's re-election campaign like I did. And he lost to a damn TeaBagger.

I'll be working to defeat him in 2012.

I'm so glad you enjoyed these quotes --it was hard to choose because I have 376 Lincoln quotes in my data base. I've been seriously thinking of doing similar posts from other leaders, etc. My database is huge.

Maria: Thank you. I would love to see it. And yes it was ugly and all about race for Lincoln -- just as it is with Obama. And thank you for your kind words -- I've been kind of depressed about this place lately -- you and Cop Car gave me a boost!!!

  6. Terrific, Kay! I just really loved this. I think President Lincoln would be apalled at his party now.

  8. I love these quotes Kay. Here's one of my favorite Abe Lincoln quotes:

"It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

    He was awesome.... ~Joy

  9. Kay: Thanks!!! And I agree. I'm betting he and the other great men built our country are weeping and shaking their heads in despair. Many of today's politicians are going to have a LOT to answer for when they meet their maker.

Joy: I like that one, too and of coure it's in my database and it sure applies to a LOT of the GOP today. I tried to include some of his not so popular wisdom. With 376 quotes from Lincoln alone in my files, it's hard to choose!
