Healthcare and Moi

I really get tired of doctors so I'm going to spare you the gory details of my trip to the ER yesterday. It isn't really over yet and I want to see what happens when Dr. Maria gets back. In the mean time there are two more scrip on the shelf. Yikes!

Today I saw my new endocrinologist, Dr. Krishna. I was good -- I did a good job of stifling a nearly uncontrollable urge to start singing" "Hare Krishna . . . Hare Krishna . . ." from the musical "Hair" -- yes I am a child of the '60s. What helped was that his office staff are friendly, courteous, thorough, and professional. I met his nice nurse practitioner first and we went through all the gory details of all the crap I've been through medically. Dr. K. came in and he talked with me about my history also asking excellent questions as he reviewed my chart in almost accentless English and I was delighted with that. As y'all know I'm hardly a xenophobe given the work I've done but when we're talking about my health I want clarity.

Nurse Heidi came back with orders for more tests and an appointment after New Year's and Dr. K. thinks I need to take 1000-1200 mgs of calcium carbonate daily since my bone scan shows a touch of osteoporosis in -- God help us all -- my hip. I've been joking for years that because I am tall and thin, I was prolly going to be one of those old ladies who simply stands up and her hip breaks. Sigh. Sometimes I hate it when I'm right. Something that I really liked was instead of giving me a card (that I lose half the time) for my next appointment and tests, they gave me a sticker that I can put in my new planner. Good stuff!!!!

While I would have liked everyone to wave magic wands and make me well, rich, young and gorgeous, I am pleased that they are competent and encouraging and most importantly, they listen. It really doesn't get better than that in health care these days.

Tomorrow I hope I can sleep a lot and write a post that I've been thinking about for a while. And thanks for all the support all y'all give me -- I do appreciate it!! I hope y'all are having an wonderful day!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!!!

Kay

  1. ER, oh no!! Don't you just hate going to those horrible places. Maybe they'd be alright if you weren't sick going in.

I suppose to be taking calcium and vit D but my gut just won't co-operate, cause horrible pain when I take it.

  2. Sounds like a good doctor visit! I have a Dr. McCoy, the first time I met him I wanted to do my Spock impression :)
But, I didn't. I just asked if he got a lot of star trek jokes. The answer was yes :)

So, glad to hear things went good for you. Hope you get a good nights sleep!

    take care, kiddo

  7. Aw, Kay. Emergency. That's a bummer, but I'm glad a good doc and his staff are looking after you. Has anyone suggested Lyrica? I have a friend who has had a lot of whacky symptoms this year and after months of testing, they recommended Lyrica--and it is working.

  8. Good luck, Kay. I go to the military hospital which isn't too bad but I don't even see a doctor. I have a nurse practitioner. However, I really like her so far.

  9. I remember Dr. Chaudry, the orthopedic surgeon who examined my son after he stupidly put a .22 bullet into his foot. Heavy Indian accent, yes, but his advice (to leave it be and not try to remove it) was clear, emphatic, very authoritative and impossible not to understand. I think competence cuts through nearly any communication barrier.

Good luck with all those bureaucRATS.
