Good News!!!! So Let There Be Music!!!!

I'm continuing with the plan for now and doing my Ohio State thing which was the original plan for this week -- mostly because I am soooooooooo sick of politics. (Another whiner or lecture on issues and I'll give up.) I did have some good news today: Ohio State is a 19-point favorite over Michigan!!!!!!!!! Then again, those of us who are long-time fans know all too well that stats don't matter when these two teams -- our Buckeyes and the Wolverines -- meet, all stats go flying out the window!!!!! Soooooooooooooo here's a cartoon and a video of TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band in the Land) aka The Pride of the Buckeyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield is not an Ohio State alumni and swears this strip wasn't meant as a slam at Michigan's Wolverines and I believe him. However, the loyal Buckeye fans love it whatever his intent.

Here's TBDBTITL playing my friend and fellow Buckeye fan Joared of Along the Way and my favorite song in their repertoire: The Official Rock Song of the State of Ohio!

Goooooooooooooooooooo Buckeyes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Whoopee! Great rendition of "Hang On Sloopy." I was amazed years after I left Ohio to learn the State of Ohio had officially adopted this song. As I've written earlier on my blog a young musician friend created the OSU band's arrangement. Thanks for the video. Thanks, also, for mentioning my blog.

Another favorite music performance that seems always to trigger a tear and so many memories is seeing and hearing the Ohio State band perform "Script Ohio" even though I'm not an OSU alum. At least most of the time before the game starts that performance is shown on TV.

Trivia.....I've written on my blog previously about how in the sixties I had accepted a position at WOSU-TV (Ohio State Universities public TV station) then had to relinquish it before I could even start work when my husband's employment necessitated our leaving Columbus (Ohio State Universities home) for Athens (home of Ohio University.) The Program Director who hired me (a former colleague at an NBC affiliate commercial TV station) had played the tuba with OSU's marching band years earlier and had the honor of being selected to dot the "i" in "Script Ohio."

I've had a gripe against televised college football games ever since half-time band performances ceased to be shown. Instead I have to listen to the talking heads regurgitate analysis, statistics, replays and other football game coverage replacing the musical entertainment I always enjoyed.

    Funny Garfield cartoon!

I was in Ann Arbor for the first time this past Oct. Know a family member there will be rooting for Mich., but realizes the team isn't having a really good year. I know better than to gloat over the game's odds this year. Perhaps the game will be on TV here in So. Cal.

You're sure right about the outcome of any game between those teams being unpredictable no matter what their national standings. The long running history of competitiveness between the teams attests to the fact anything can happen.

Earlier tonight TV news showed snow in northern Ohio's Ashtabula (an area my mother often said received lots of snow in her day.) I had forgotten how early in the year those flurries can start. I do recall tracking rabbits in the snow on Thanksgiving many years ago in south central Ohio near Cambridge.

  3. haha! That Garfield comic sums up a little football well, huh?! I just moved to Germany (and started blogging!). Now I'm trying to keep the whole football/soccer thing straight.
Have a blast with the game.

  4. Loved the cartoon! Ha ha. Loved the band. That is so fun to watch. I agree w/ Joared about the talking heads instead of the entertainment.
    Good luck with your Buckeyes.
I should send you some Buckeye Confections to celebrate.
    have fun.

    Kay,

I love it when you have the videos of the OSU band. I enjoyed "Hang On Sloopy" but my greatest enjoyment comes from clicking on the video of SCRIPT OHIO. That is sensational.I'll bet I've watched that 20 times over the years.

Now you know that I am sincere in my praise because I have lived all my life in Pennsylvania and ,of course, I am the world's greatest Penn State fan, but that doesn't stop me from admiring the great music and pageantry of the OSU band.

Because I want to remain your friend I will not mention the PSU-OSU football game in October......

  6. Joared: I posted it just for you! I posted the resolution that made "Sloopy" The official rock song last year and, if I can find it, I'll email it to you.

ABC is showing the game this season and I think they show the band show.

It snowed a bit -- just enough to cover my car -- on Sunday and today.

Katie: Welcome!!! Do visit often -- you never know what I'm going to post!

Annie: Thanks!! I have a good recipe.

Nancy: Script Ohio is awesome and will appear. And I'd rather lose to Penn State than Michigan any day. I think Joe Paterno is the greatest! He's one of my heroes.
