Random Acts of Comedy

I stopped after work yesterday at a store I frequent to pick up a few things. As usual, I picked up more than I intended because this place has great bargains on all sorts of things ranging from groceries and drug store items to all manner of weird things. As a matter of fact, I stole my Van Gogh "Irises" poster (unframed, of course) that y'all seem to like from there a while back for a mere $1.99! But I digress . . .

At the checkouts they have television sets blaring the news and it irritates me to no end. Yesterday while I was waiting in line I got to hear the story about Yahoo's turning over documents to the Chinese which in turn caused a dissident journalist to be arrested and imprisoned. In a Congressional hearing on the matter, Yahoo's executives were blasted as "moral pygmies" for their misdeeds. Read that last sentence again. Now don't get me wrong -- I think that what Yahoo was horribly wrong in what they did and that could be another blog on privacy on the Web. It just struck me as absolutely hysterical that Congress Critters were calling anyone a moral pygmy and I said so out loud to my fellow customers in line: "Look at who's calling who a moral pygmy! Sheeeeeesh!" They laughed and agreed that I had it right. The next story was about Bill Clinton and I simply couldn't help myself when I said, "Bill Clinton -- now there's another fine example of American morality. " By this time I was at the cashier and he was laughing like hell, too, and asked, "Ma'am do you do standup comedy anywhere?" He looked vaguely disappointed when I told him that I didn't. Maybe I missed my calling . . .

Happy Blogging!!!!!!!

  2. It's never too late. You've been wondering what to do for your next career -- well??? If Phyllis Diller, right out of Lima, could do it, and she was no spring chicken when she started, surely you could, too. Ohio living makes for good comics -- think Jonathan Winters -- Columbus' WBNS-TV.

Good friends of my husbands at OSU were the winning comic duo on the old Major Bowes Amateur Hour, and were sked to go to NYC. They passed up their golden opportunity when one of the pair concluded he should honor a moral commitment to complete medical school, then take over the practice of his mentor, and the other half of the pair (OSU head cheerleader) didn't want a new partner.

I even thought about doing stand up myself when I was young, and knew of no women who did that, long before Diller started. But when I did my first standup in front of my college's coaches and the football team and flopped, I went back to play acting. Years since I've realized what I could do differently and periodically have thought I should give it another whirl. Maybe we need an Elders Stand Up Comedy Tour.

  3. Kay, my husband comes close to getting applause and standing ovation for his comedy acts in Wal-Mart checkout lanes. Sounds like you two have a lot in common. Hey Joared, I'm in favor of the Elder's Stand Up Comedy Tour!

  6. I'm too chicken to say my comments out loud. But I laugh at my own jokes inside. I would love to stand next to you in the check out line.

  8. I understand about the new friend in the grocery line, Kay! I don't have the sense of humor, but more than once I have been a grocery checker and have daughters who have done the same. I feel it is necessary to make their day a little lighter by joking with them and telling them to have a nice day and thanking them. I have had too many who yelled at me for the prices of things and were grouchy at everything, so I am glad you do Stand-up for your fellow beings. I would love to stand next to you as well.
